10 Recovery-oriented Early and Transitional Intervention on the Strength of Youth and Families: From the Observation of an Early Intervention Program in New Zealand Kaoru FUJISHIMA School of Social Welfare, Tokyo University of Social Welfare (Ikebukuro Campus), Minami-ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo , Japan Abstract : Adolescence is the age when people face a lifelong decision making process - whether to pursue their studies or to find a job. This is also the age when the onset of psychiatric disorders occurs because they feel mentally unstable due to the rapid growth and changes in their mind and body. Even if their conditions do not result in an onset, many youth find it difficult to adjust to their society or have some issues against society. Therefore, an appropriate level of support at an early stage and support in the transitional stage is necessary so that they can move toward the life they want. In order to research the direction of youth support in early and transitional stages in Japan, the author visited organizations providing such services in New Zealand twice, in 2009 and This paper reports the Youth Transitional Programme (YTP) (by the Early Intervention Service in Auckland) and the Multi Systemic Therapy (MST) and Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTSC) (by a non-profit organization, Youth Horizon). All of these programs focus on the strength relationship between the youth and families and on conducting a systematic approach toward the environment surrounding the youth. Setting each intervention period clearly, these organizations create supporting plans, together with the supporters and various specialists, to provide support so that the youth and families can achieve the goals that they have set. The support toward recovery is recognized commonly between their staff members.
