7 No.87 A word from another world The United States to Higashikawa: One Woman, Two World's Chloe Elizabeth Naylor Hello, everyone in Higashikawa! My name is Chloe Naylor and I m from the United States of America. I was born in Oklahoma which is located almost in the middle of the United States! We experience many different types of weather such as the hot summers in Tokyo as well as the cold winters of Hokkaido. I graduated from Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma with a bachelor s in International Business. I have a lot of hobbies, but a few of mine include cooking and running/cycling. Some of my favorite things are Disney, coffee, and Japanese food! This is my very first time teaching as an ALT and I m incredibly excited to have the opportunity to better understand Japanese culture while also spreading awareness of my own. I ll be in your care from now on! New year s Eve Natalie Edmondson New Year s Eve is an important celebration in many countries. In Australia, it is big and loud, with live music and lots of fireworks off the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Many people travel to Sydney because it is one of the first big cities in the world to see the New Year. New Zealand does not like this since they greet midnight 2 hours earlier than Australia. In my family, however, we do not have a big celebration for New Year s. We get together and, ever since I was a child, eat shortbread to celebrate the change of the calendar. It is simple, but rituals like this have a lot of power. So now, not matter what country I m in, I find shortbread, and on December 31st wait for the clock to tell me it s ok to eat it. Doing this makes me feel close to my family. 8
