53 Sakiko YONEDA, Miho OTA This research investigated the effects of an active-learning project conducted in Shimoda, Japan. The project consisted of two university English classes hosted at an elementary school and helping the children interacting with/or giving city tours to US naval sailors in May Materials for analysis included pre- and post-questionnaires, J-POSTL, and feedback from homeroom teachers at the elementary school; several perspectives were explored including: English proficiency, teaching skills, how to communicate with children, how to communicate with the sailors, and how to be a facilitator between children and sailors during the city tour. Analyses were performed using the KH Coder 3 and t-tests. The results showed that students found the project rewarding and they gained a sense of accomplishment after putting in a lot of time and energy. The project was helpful in terms of career design.
