3 It was very hot in Nagasaki ( ) the morning of August 9th, Sixteenyear-old Chieko Watanabe did not feel like going to the factory because she didn t want to work there on such a humid day. She was a student worker at the factory on the other side of Nagasaki Bay. She stopped to think for a moment, but then (hurry) from her house to the pier to catch a ferry. At the factory, the female student workers were making parts for lights. They wore mompe (a kind of work pants) and bands around their arms which said Student Worker. Chieko (sit) down and began her usual work. She and the other girls complained about the hot weather. At ten to eleven, she stopped work to go and see an engineer. She left the workroom with Ayako Yamashita, one of her classmates. They walked along a corridor of the factory and proudly showed each other the hard calluses on their palms. Chieko was looking over at the engineer s office through a window in the main building, when suddenly there was a huge flash. It was a great dazzling white light. She was very ( ). She and Ayako started to run to a shelter at the back of the factory. The terrible sounds of destruction were all around them. Suddenly Chieko fell down; she felt a sharp pain and fainted. Chieko slowly began to wake up. She did not know how long she had been lying there. As she opened her eyes, she cried, < A > But her brother was working at another factory.
