3 る -verbs? う -verbs? How to distinguish る verbs from うverbs??? Step 1: make sure the verb in question is NOT an irregular verb ( する くる ) Step2: Check to see if it ends with る for the short form Step 3: Look at the vowel in the penultimate (i.e. 2 nd from the last) syllable. If the penultimate syllable contains the vowel [i] or [e] à It is HIGHLY likely (but not always) that the verb is a る-verb みる miru たべる taberu ねる neru Note that there are some exceptional cases: e. g. かえる All the others are う-verbs る verbs have the same base for the short/long form: みる (mi-ru) みます (mi-masu) Cf. よむ masu) (yom-u) よみます (yom-i-

12 How to answer a question in Japanese: with a Question Word なんじにコーヒーをのみますか? Substitute the question word with the answer, and Repeat the verb You can skip the part already understood E.g. 3pm ごご三じにのみます いつにほんにいきますか? Tomorrow あしたいきます
