This is the date of the ever-popular EJCA New Year s Party. Come and enjoy Japanese sake, Japanese New Year dishes, mochi soup and enterntainment. There will be door prizes, too! Activities for children are being considered. The New Year s party at EJCA is a very special event where you can experience Japanese New Year food. Some members come in Kimono..you can too! Sound good? Please join the party with your favourite Japanese new year s dishes or Canadian dishes. It is a potluck dinner. EJCA will serve sake, drinks and Mochi soup. All free of charge! The party will be limited to EJCA members, their families and friends. You don t have to make a reservation but remember the big hall has been always full for this party for the last several years. 2 Vice President s Corner Sanae Ohki 副会長から報告 大木早苗 EJCA held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the beautiful autumn day of October 15, 2017 and elected eight board members who will serve the year. Since the past president, Yoko Azumaya, finished her term in October and a president has not been decided yet, I was appointed to be the acting president until a new president is in place. Now it is November and Edmonton is covered with snow, not much yet, but it is surely getting colder. The November board meeting was held on Thursday, November 9, New members Lyn Rafferty, Julie Rossignol and Tamara Sutherland were warmly welcomed. A few important decisions were made: 1. Board positions: President: to be decided later Vice President: Sanae Ohki Treasurer: Lyn Rafferty (Jim Hoyano to mentor) Secretary: John Priegert Directors at large: Hideji Ono, Jim Hoyano, Julie Rossignol, Omar Amer, Tamara Sutherland 2. The annual board retreat day was set for Sunday, December 17, At the retreat the board will discuss a plan for the year, decide on priority tasks, review the position descriptions of the board, and review committees and EJCA events for Pilot project to hire an Event Coordinator: Many times in the past, the board discussed the need for an Event Coordinator but EJCA had not hired an Event Coordinator yet. We had a wonderful opportunity to try this idea out by hiring Tomomi Calder for a pilot project. At the end of the pilot project term, August 2018, the board will evaluate the effectiveness of the project and make a further decision. Tomomi will receive training for coordinating events and at the same time will help with other tasks that used to done by board members. Then, the board members will be able to use their time more of their time on decision making. We also expect increased interactions among a wider range of members. Another key activity that is expected in this pilot project is to make more contact with Japanese new-comers, Japanese speaking members and non-members. So, the Event Coordinator must be bilingual in Japanese and English. 4. Changes in EJCA office hours: Scott Tanaka, the Facility Manager since March 2017, proposed a modification to EJCA office hours to make them match EJCA activities. The new office hours will start on December 1, Monday 6 pm 9 pm modified Tuesday 6 pm 9 pm modified Wednesday closed no change Thursday 12 pm- 4 pm no change Friday 3 pm 6 pm no change Saturday closed no change Sunday 10 am 2 pm additional With the addition of the event coordinator, the office will be open for more daytime hours after January November - December 2017 エドモントン日本文化協会は秋の陽が紅葉に照り映える 2017 年 10 月 15 日に年次総会を開き 年度の役員を選出しました 副会長だった私は新しい役員会が会長を決めるまで 会長役を代行するように伝えられました 前任の東谷陽子会長が退いたためです その数週間後 街が雪で覆われ寒くなってきた 11 月 9 日に新役員会が催されました 新役員のリン ラファ-ティ ジュリ- ロッシニョール タマラ サザランドも初めての参加で皆で暖かく歓迎しました いくつか大切な決定事項があったので 報告します 1. 役職会長未定 副会長大木早苗会計リン ラファ-ティ ( 経験者のジム ホヤノが手伝う ) 書記ジョン プリガート役員大野秀司 ジム ホヤノ ジュリ- ロッシニョール オマール アマー タマラ サザランド 2. 例年行われる役員会の企画相談会 ( リトリート ) 役員会では例年リトリートを行いその年の活動方針を決めて E JCA 全体の企画をします 今年は 役員の任務の見直し 各コミティの任務の確認なども行います 12 月 17 日です 3. 行事企画係のパイロットプロジェクト行事の企画をしたり ボランティアを募ったりと 行事を行うには多くの時間がかかります 今までは主に役員がこの仕事をして負担になっていました 何度もこの仕事を出来る人を雇って専任でしてもらえたらいいと言われていてもなかなか実現しませんでした この度カルダー友美さんにこの係を試験的に8ヶ月間行っていただくことになりました 試験期間中に何を評価するのかをはっきりと決めて その効果によって 将来この係を続けるかを判断します もし効果があると判断されたら 会の規則に従って公募してこの係を続けることになります またこの係は新しく日本から来た人や日本語を話す会員との交流も計ってEJCAの活動を活発にしていきたい意向です この係は日本語と英語が出来ることが条件になります 仕事は1 月から始めます 4. 会館のオフィス時間の変更 3 月から会館のマネ-ジャーをしているスコット タナカから提案があり マネージャーが会館で働く日時が変ります これは会館を使う会員が多い時間 また使用後の掃除をするのに適した時間帯を考えて決めてあります 以下のスケジュールは12 月 1 日から実行します 月曜日 6 時 -9 時金曜日 3 時 -6 時火曜日 6 時 -9 時土曜日なし水曜日なし日曜日 10 時 -2 時 木曜日 12 時 -4 時 1 月から行事企画係が仕事を始めると会館が開いている時間が増えます 11 月の役員会に参加して今年の役員は皆とても元気で何でも率先して行おうという気持ちの人ばかりだと知り とっても嬉しいです この方達と一年間 EJCAの為に沢山の事が出来そうな気がします 会員の皆様もご一緒に良い1 年にいたしましょう At the November board meeting, I found that all board members were full of energy and very eager to contribute to the successful operation of EJCA. I am very confident that this group will achieve many good things! The board is always looking for new ideas to provide more services to its members and new approaches to make EJCA valuable for you. 3 Self-introduction of new board members 新役員の自己紹介 Julie Rossignol I became involved with the EJCA several years ago when I joined Edmonton Gojukai Karate club. Before that, I studied Japanese language and history in university. After graduating with a BA in Honours History and a Masters in Communications, I began working as a web project specialist for the Government of Alberta. My job involves coming up web-based solutions for delivering information and reaching key audiences. I have developed many skills over the years including writing, designing, marketing, and systems thinking, among others. As a board member, I hope to help the EJCA recruit more young volunteers and to streamline and modernize the board s administrative processes. I look forward to bringing my communications and tech-based perspective to develop strategies to enhance the EJCA. Lyn Rafferty I am extremely happy to have been voted on as a member of the EJCA Board. I look forward to serving the community to the best of my ability. My family and I have been members of the EJCA for many years courtesy of the Edmonton Goju-kai Karate Club. My goal as a member of the Board is to continue improving communication and cooperation between the current members of EJCA as well as the surrounding community. I would like to work on expanding awareness of the EJCA in order to foster new relationships, hopefully garnering more memberships and rentals. Tamara Sutherland I have been a member of the EJCA and volunteering at events for a couple years. After being an exchange student to Kyoto in high school, I studied Japanese language and linguistics at the University of Alberta. A few years ago, I wanted to learn more about kimono and traditional Japanese clothing, and taught myself how to wear the wafuku that now I collect. I am now an administrator for one of the major online Englishlanguage resource groups on kimono, and is also a member of the Matsukaze Cha no Yu (tea ceremony) Association. I hope to promote education of various elements of Japanese culture to both EJCA members and the greater Edmonton community. This could include additional and enhanced resources for cultural programs and for major events such as the Heritage Festival and Natsu Matsuri Summer Festival. ジュリー ロッシニョール私は数年前に剛柔会空手クラブの会員になったのを機会に EJCA の活動に参加するようになりました それ以前に大学で日本語と歴史を勉強しました 大学で歴史の学士とコミュニケーションの修士を取ってからアルバータ政府のウェブサイトの専門家として働き始めました 私は現在 アルバータ政府がウェブサイトを活用して広報活動を有効にできるようにする仕事をしています 私はコミュニケーションに関連した文書を書くこと ウェブサイトをデザインすること このようなものを広く市場にだすこと そして広報活動全体を一つのシステムとして考えること等の分野で経験と知識を持っています 私は EJCA にもっと大勢の若いボランティアが参加してくれることを期待しています また新役員としては私の経験と知識を生かして EJCA の運営をすっきりと効率よくすることと 広報活動を有効に利用して EJCA の活動を向上することに貢献したいとおもっています リン ラファーティこのたび EJCA の役員に選出されてとてもうれしく思っています 出来る限り EJCA に貢献したいとおもいます 私が剛柔会空手クラブの会員になってから 私と私の家族は長い間 EJCA の会員です 新役員として EJCA 会員の間のコミュニケーションをもっと育てること EJCA の活動をもっと広くカナダ人社会に知ってもらうこと EJCA 会員を拡充すること センターの施設の貸し出しを積極的におこなうことなどに努力したいと思っています タマラ サザランド ( この日本語の自己紹介も私が書きました ) タマラ サザランドは 2 年間ぐらい EJCA のメンバーです イベントでボランティアをしています 高校生の時に京都で留学した後 アルバータ大学で日本語と言語学を勉強しました 数年前 着物に興味を持ち始めて 着付けを独学しました 現在 着物に関する主要なオンライン英語リソースグループの管理者であり 松風茶の湯の会のメンバーもしています タマラは EJCA メンバーとエドモントンの両方に日本文化を促進することを望んでいます これには 既存のプログラムのリソースを増やして ヘリテージ祭りや夏祭りなどのイベントでのディスプレイを改善したいです 日本文化関連の外に エドモントン市に勤めていて エアー カデットのプログラムに長年関係があります Outside of my Japanese culture related interests, I work at the City of Edmonton and have had a long standing involvement with the Air Cadet program. 3 November - December /2018 Board members: (Omar Amer is missing) Back from left - Julie Rossignol, Hideji Ono, Jim Hoyano, Tamara Sutherland, John Priegert Front from left Lyn Rafferty, Sanae Ohki

4 EJCA AGM Report John Priegert EJCA 年次総会の報告 ジョン プリガート The Annual General Meeting of the Association was held on Sunday October 15. Planning for this important event was done by Board member Kim Frey, who arranged the details of the meeting, the dinner, and the club presentations. Special thanks to her for the excellent organization. The meeting was well attended by 49 members, and the agenda was brief. After the President s Report and the Treasurer s Report, questions and comments from the membership were received. The election of new Directors followed. Three new directors were elected, to replace three retiring directors. The dinner was Chinese food this year, purchased from a local restaurant, plus Japanese sushi from one of our regular providers. Quantities were once again generous! This dinner is held at no cost to the members, as a thank you for attending the AGM. This year, all EJCA affiliated clubs and groups were invited to make a five minute presentation to the membership. After a few minutes of technical difficulties with computers and the projector, many clubs made interested presentations, highlighting their activities and successes of the past year. The event concluded with more socializing, before the final cleaning up of the Centre. Thank you to all who attended, and especially those who stayed to help with the tables and chairs 年 EJCA 年次総会が 10 月 15 日の EJCA センターで開かれました 今年の年次総会の準備は 総会 夕食会 EJCA クラブのプレゼンテーションと総て役員のキム フレイさんが準備しました 丁寧な準備をありがとうございました 総会には 49 名の会員が出席しました 例年のとおり 会長 会計の報告があり そのあとで質疑応答がありました 今年ははたくさんの役員の任期終了が重なったので 新規役員も三人選出されました 夕食会は中華とにぎり寿司の出前です ことしもたくさんの量を用意したので 二回 三回とおかわりをしても食べきれず お土産のお持ち帰りにしました この豪華な美味しい夕食は総て EJCA の予算でまかない 年次総会に出席した人をねぎらいました 夕食会のあとで EJCA の会員のクラブの紹介がありました 一つのクラブの会員になっていても普段他のクラブの活動を見る機会がありませんから このようなクラブの紹介は EJCA の活動を理解するためにとても役立ちます 年次総会と夕食会は毎年おこなっています 今年出席できなかった方も来年はぜひとも参加してください Remember this is an annual event, usually in the second weekend of October. 5 EJCA Japanese Lanaguage Classes have been very popular! 日本語教室大盛況! Report by Mineko Koto, instructor 報告 : 日本語講師向当みね子 EJCA has been offering Japanese Langauge classes since 2009 at an affordable fee. We have experienced instructors and assistants, and each class is designed to accommodate students needs. 1. Three levels of adults classes are designed as a oneyear program that starts in September. So, we are not taking new students for the Winter session. EJCA では 2009 年から日本語教室を開いています 経験豊かな講師の指導の下 生徒の必要に合せたカリキュラムであること 授業料が安いこと等のために 会員間にとても人気があります 1. 大人の 3 つのレベルの授業は 9 月に始まる 1 年間のクラスなので 1 月から始る冬学期の公募はありません 年の 9 月から新しく ユースのための教室 を試験的に始めてみました 2. Japanese for Youth was offered as a trial classe this fall. A student, Rafael Tian, reported her experience below. 以下はユースの教室の生徒からの感想です ティーンエージャーのための日本語クラス ラファエル ティアン For many years, I was quite interested in Japan and Japanese culture, but somehow, I never managed to commit to learn the language. Luckily, my sister and I stumbled upon the Edmonton Japanese Community Association s cultural program, which includes Japanese lessons for teens and adults. I enrolled in the teen program, and I am happy to say that I thoroughly enjoy it. The classes are nice. We learn new and interesting things, and each lesson gradually progresses our skills. The content we learn is immediately applicable to daily life scenarios. As well, the lessons themselves are paced fairly well; we do not spend too much time on a topic, nor do we hurriedly rush past small details. The lessons are quite fun, interactive, and easy to understand. All this harmony is orchestrated by our teachers. They are amazing; they go to great lengths to ensure our understanding of the material. Moreover, they are very friendly and are extremely knowledgeable about the content as well as its various approaches and contexts. To add on, the atmosphere we learn in is not too formal and is also fitting for the learning occasion. All in all, I highly recommend this class to any student interested in partaking in this rich culture. All 10 youth students want to continue the class. So we are not accepting new students for the Winter session. 3. In September 2017, EJCA started another trial class- -- Japanese for /Seniors. Presently, five people meet every Thursday for two hours to enjoy studying Japanese at EJCA. Reasons why people are taking the senior class include; wanting to visit Japan, having studied Japanese before and wanting to improve it, wanting to stave off dementia, etc. In each class, students practice important phrases, and learn how to use smartphone and tablet applications useful in Japan and Japanese culture and customs. The class proceeds gently so that everyone has time to understand Japanese. The class is very interactive; for example, students sing songs and do role-play. So, if you are thinking of going to Japan or interested in Japan, why don t you join the class in January? Everyone is welcome, especially those who know no Japanese at all. The class begins on January 25. 6 A Letter of Thanks to EJCA Takahiko Masuda President the Metro Edmonton Japanese Community School We appreciated very much for your cooperation and contribution to the 40 th Anniversary of the Metro Edmonton Community School. You have helped us to widely advertise the anniversary among school alumni, their parents and teachers and gave us a handsome sum of money for our anniversary events. The school was started 40 years ago by a group of volunteers who worked hard to open a school for teaching Japanese and Japanese culture to children of Japanese and Japanese Canadians. At that time, the school had to overcome many difficult problems stemming from the small number of such children and people capable of teaching Japanese. Now after 40 years, the school has expanded to accommodate more than 120 students and 17 teachers. We will endeavor to maintain the school and educate children who will be able to connect closely Japan to Canada. Most of our students are now children of international marriages and we must provide them with an educational environment in which they can cultivate their own incentives to learn Japanese and pursue the study with rigor and joy. For this goal, we are upgrading the teaching skills of our teachers and developing programs to suit the various levels of Japanese knowledge of students. Our wish is that the Edmonton Japanese Community Association will continue to give the school your support in the future. The banquet was attended by people from the Consulate General of Japan in Calgary, the Edmonton Japanese Community Association, Alberta Education, five guests from Japan, seven out-of-town guests, and many from Edmonton. Altogether, 118 people came to the banquet to celebrate the occasion. The banquet started with social time and proceeded to anniversary speeches, dinner, and silent auction. It was a wonderful opportunity to get together with those who were involved in the school when it started 40 years ago and those who have supported the school over the last 40 years such as teachers, staff and administrators. Many old and new school alumni came and enjoyed a slide show of old school scenes, identifying their themselves 20, 30, and 40 years ago in the pictures. 9 The First Meetup of Kimono de Jack to the Art Galley of Alberta Tamara Sutherland Kimono de Jack Northern Alberta held its first official meetup on Tuesday, November 7th at the Art Gallery of Alberta. While only a small group braved the cold weather that evening, we were able to enjoy an interesting mix of exhibits including indigenous and contemporary art. Kimono de Jack started in Kyoto in 2011 with the aim to create opportunities for people to meet in kimono in a fun and casual way. It has grown to expand internationally. The Northern Alberta chapter hopes to now host meetups, giving the group opportunities to explore the Edmonton area s many beautiful landmarks while wearing Japanese traditional clothing. Our next meetup will likely be sometime in January. 10 Mr. Fujita, an Oyster Fisherman I met in Rikuzen- Takada City Keiko Oba It has been six years already since the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. In the summer five years ago, just one year after the earthquake and tsunami, I went to Rikuzen-Takada City in Iwate Prefecture, to work as a volunteer of a non-profit organization called NICE. Rikuzen-Takada was famous for its cultivated oysters. In the cove as quiet as a lake, numerous rafts for oysters were floating. Small boats used to go among the rafts to pick up oysters. It was a quiet, soul-soothing scene. The earthquake and tsunami changed everything at Rikuzen-Takada. The tsunami washed away all the rafts and many oyster fishermen. One of the survivors was Mr. Fujiata. He had lost everything too but started resurrecting oyster farming to see the scene of oyster rafts floating in the cove. Five years ago, I helped him rebuild the rafts with many other volunteers to restore the life before the earthquake and tsunami for them. By now Mr. Fujita is selling his oysters in the expanding market. Now if you look at Hirorta Cove, you will see many oyster rafts floating like they used to. But Mr. Fujita is still receiving volunteers to help him. Receiving volunteers is in fact a big job in itself. Surely right after the earthquake and tsunami, their assistance was very helpful for oyster fishermen. But now Mr. Fujita receives volunteers who may just visit him once. Mr. Fujita must make a schedule for volunteers, teach them what to do and watch out for their safety. It seems to me that Mr. Fujita is in fact volunteering the job of receiving volunteers. Yet, Mr. Fujita says that he is just glad to see volunteers come to help him because he thinks that volunteers will have opportunities to see how hard natural disasters could hit our life and also to see how oyster fishermen live. Now we can see more and more super-markets and convenience stores in Rikuzen-Takada and the city has re-gained an appearance of a typical local city. But here and there you can still see the construction of levelling up the dyke and the repairing of rivers and roads. Some temporary houses for victems are empty but some are still occupied six years after the earthquake and tsunami. The city population is decreasing and Mr. Fujita, despite of his resurrected and successful oyster farming, cannot find anyone who can take over his business when he eventually retires. The city is still on its way to restoration. Please visit his oyster farm and enjoy fresh or broiled oysters. You can order his oysters online too. Keiko and 4 other NICE members with Mr. Fujita and a guest at the Oyster bar. 恵子さんと 4 人の NICE 仲間 藤田さんは前列左 陸前高田で出会った牡蠣漁師 藤田さん 大場恵子 東北大震災以降 6 年が経ちました 5 年前 震災一年後にナイス (NICE- Never-ending International work Camps Exchange) という NGO 法人の団体の一員として岩手県の陸前高田でボランティアをしました その縁で今年の夏 また 陸前高田を訪れました 陸前高田の広田湾では 牡蠣やホタテの養殖が盛んです 高台から眺めると まるで湖のような穏やかな湾に数えられないほどの養殖用のいかだが浮かんでいます その中を時折 作業や収穫のための小さい船が行き交います それは広田湾ではごく日常の風景で 地元の人でなくても なんとも心癒されるものです ところが その日常的な風景や生活があの大津波により壊滅しました 牡蠣漁師の多くの命が失われ 湾のいかだもことごとく流されました 生き残った漁師の一人が 今回もお世話になった藤田さんです 藤田さんも 津波で全てを失いました しかし 広田湾にもう一度 あのいかだの浮かぶ穏やかな風景を取り戻したいと震災直後から 復興に向けて懸命に努力されてきました 5 年前にお手伝いしたのは まさに牡蠣の養殖用のいかだ作りでした 多くのボランティアがいかだ作りをはじめとして 漁師の皆さんが震災以前と同じように生活ができるよう 広田湾にいかだが浮かぶようにとお手伝いをしました その後 藤田さんの牡蠣は どんどん出荷されるようになり 順調に収穫量も増え 販路も拡大し 成功を収めています 今では 広田湾いっぱいに牡蠣のイカダが何事もなかったように浮かんでいます すでに全くボランティアの手を借りなくても十分にやっていける藤田さんですが 今もボランティアを受け入れて下さっています ボランティアを受け入れるというのは 実はとても面倒で手のかかることです 確かに震災直後はありがたくもあり 役に立ったのかもしれません しかし 素人がたいしたこともできないのに 単発で毎回違う人数やスケジュールでやってくる 時間や仕事の調整 ボランティアの体調や事故などへの気配りなどなど どちらかというと藤田さんの方こそがボランティアを受け入れるボランティアです それでも そこは自然災害や防災というもののナマの教育の場であり 漁師という厳しい仕事を知る貴重な体験の場 藤田さんは 来てくれるだけで嬉しい 励みになる と たくさんの人々を受け入れ続けています 陸前高田の街にはスーパーマーケットやコンビニも増え 一見すると どこにでもある田舎の地方都市のように見えます ただ まだあちこちで海岸の防潮堤や地面のかさ上げ工事 河川 道路の工事をしています 小学校の校庭には空き屋が目立つようにはなりましたが 仮設住宅もあります 人口は減少し続けています せっかく立て直した藤田さんの牡蠣の養殖も後継者がいません 震災直後とは違う 復興への道 がまだまだ続いています 藤田さんの牡蠣は 本当に美味しいです 陸前高田においでの際は 広田湾の牡蠣小屋へ是非 足を運んでみてください オススメは 生牡蠣はもちろん焼き牡蠣でしょうか インターネットでの販売もしています! 10 November - December 2017

11 Thank you to the Fall Bazaar! Scott Tanaka We would like to give out a big thank-you to the volunteers for putting on another great bazaar. Around 320 people attended the event held on Saturday Oct 21, Lineups started an hour before the event. Wow, what a great turn out. Our past president Yoko Azumaya was helping to greet guest at the door and giving the door prize tickets. (I will miss her presence on the EJCA board. There were always fun and productive discussions at the board meeting.) There was delicious curry lunch, steaming hot udon noodles and various bento boxes in the food section, and Japanese wooden sandals, Japanese wood block prints, Japanese paintings, dishes, books and Japanese toys for kids to purchase at the non-food section. Marline Prosper was selling cards made in traditional Washi Chigiri-e art style. She had the Christmas card collection out as well for sale. Very beautiful! Yoshiko Jackson came from her farm to sell her products, Emiko Kinoshita sold her hand-made Deam catchers. Les Dowdell, Akiko Ogata, Grace and Noriko Fujino, Matsu no Kai and Chizuko Kimura all had interesting items for sale. David Mitsui and other volunteers were busy handling the bento box sale. Great sales job Mr. Mitsui and the team! We sold out of the 100 makunouchi bento boxes, 60 sushi bento, 40 curry, 45 udon noodles and all extra dishes prepared for sale. Oh, I should mention about Mochi, Japanese pastries, and bake sale items. Bake sale items were also donated by our members. Thank you! They were also excellent. Always a sign of the wonderful work of the kitchen crew who had been hard at work weeks before the event planning, cooking and putting the bento boxes together. If this article makes you hungry perhaps you should go to Japanese restaurants to repeat the experience. Generous supporters donated gift certificates and other items to the silent auction (please see a volunteer & donor list on page 14). The people who won the silent auction items are in for a treat. There were so many that helped with this event. Thanks again to the members of EJCA and ACL communities that came out to the event. Cathy Tennant was the wonderful volunteer organizer for the event. 12 NIHONGO KAIWA Japanese Conversation Club Nihongo Kaiwa was started several years ago by a few members of the EJCA Japanese Language Class who wanted to continue to develop their conversational skills in an informal setting outside of the classroom. As others joined this group, it quickly became obvious that there were two distinct levels of language skills, so a second meeting was added. We have been fortunate and grateful to a number of dedicated native Japanese speakers who volunteered to be our discussion facilitators. Club meetings are not meant to be a formal Japanese language class, so the members need to have some basic competency in speaking Japanese when they join. Information about these two levels of meetings are described next: Goju-Kai Karate Club represented Canada in World Competition Lyn Rafferty Edmonton Goju-kai Karate Club was honoured to be part of the team which represented Canada at the 7 th International Karate-do Goju-kai (IKGA) Global Championships held at the Richmond Olympic Oval in BC from September 28 th to the October 1 st this year. Meetings are held at EJCA every Monday evening except on statutory holidays. Basic Level: 5:00 6:00 p.m. This meeting is suitable for those who are familiar with verb forms (including te-form), numbers, telling time, and asking and answering questions about daily life. Advanced Level: 6:00 7:00 p.m. This meeting is suitable for those with an intermediate/advanced level of Japanese speaking ability. Proficiency may have been developed from living/visiting Japan, formal study, and/or self study. Members should be comfortable understanding and speaking about daily conversation topics. Fees: $10 annual fee (January to December) $1 per evening attended Contact: Carol Rushworth rushwrth@telus.net EJCA 剛柔会空手クラブがカナダ代表チームに参加リン ラファーティ 2017 年 9 月 28 日から 10 月 1 日まで BC 州リッチモンドで開催された第 7 回剛柔会世界大会に EJCA 剛柔会空手クラブがカナダチームのメンバーとして参加しました 大会には世界 24 カ国から 532 名の選手が参加しました 天気にも恵まれリッチモンドの秋景色の中で行われた楽しい大会でした The IKGA championships are held every 4 years and this year it was Canada s turn to host the event. The organizing committee did an amazing job and the tournament ran extremely smoothly and was a huge success. Canada had 101 participants, hailing from Vancouver, Nanaimo, Calgary, Edmonton and Ontario. The event was attended by 24 countries, with 532 competitors, and Vancouver put on a brilliant show for our visitors, with fantastic weather and breathtaking views, making the experience a positive one for everyone there. The Canadian team received a total of 20 medals in many different events and age categories. The events included kata, team kata, bunkai, kumite, team kumite and parakarate. These are a couple of photos of our Edmonton athletes. It was an exhausting, inspiring and fun-filled event, and it was heartwarming to see how well the participants from all over the world interacted. 13 Matsu no Kai Club (55+ Club) News Louise & Peter Wong Ready or not, winter time is here! It makes you think of Christmas and all the activities that come with it in December. Matsu no Kai Club members tried a hot pot (soup cooking) lunch after their Global TV station visit in October. The EJCA Bazaar took place the next day and our Club had a table with various goods for sale. Thank you to everyone who supported us by making a purchase. During the September and October Club meeting, we got ready for a changeover in our executive. After eight years, Peter has decided to step down as President. Welcome to the newly-elected Club President, Alan Davis. Joining Alan is May Uyeda our new Secretary. Alan and May will take their new positions in January. Midori Tanaka and Cathy Tennant will remain on the executive as Treasurer and Membership Chair. Peter and Louise Wong will continue to be regular Club members who enjoy the food and social functions. Two officers from the Edmonton Police Service presented a talk about fraud and seniors protection at our October meeting. The seniors were familiar with many of the scams mentioned in the talk but it was good to review them. Did you get a lot of children come to your door for Halloween? More than double the usual number of kids made it to our door which meant little leftover candies for me this year. In November, Club members went on an outing to the River Cree Casino. After a light lunch, Club members tried their luck at the slots and tables, with some having more success than others. We were happy to break even after 2 hours of card and slot play. Maybe next year, the new casino and big box shopping stores by the airport will be ready for the Club to visit. 松の会ニュース ルイーズ ワンとピーター ワン そろそろ冬ですね いよいよ寒くなると思うより もうすぐ楽しいクリスマスのシーズンだと思いましょう 松の会は 10 月にグローバルテレビに見学に行き その後で中華風鍋料理を食べました また EJCA のバザーには松の会会員が大勢参加しました そして散財していただいてありがとうございました 9 月と 10 月の例会で役員の入れ替えを行いました 私 ピーター ワン はこの 8 年間会長を務めさせていただきましたが このたび会長職を退くことにしました 新会長はアラン デイビスさんです メイ ウエダさんが書記になります 新会長と書記は 2018 年 1 月から仕事を始めます ミドリ タナカさん ( 会計 ) とキャシー テナントさん ( 会員係 ) は役員を続けます 私は役員は引退しますがこれからも妻共々松の会の会員は続けます 10 月の例会ではエドモントン市警察から警官二人を招待して 高齢者を詐欺から守る という話をして貰いました 話に出てきた詐欺の手口のことを知っている会員も多かったですが あらためて話を聞くのはとても詐欺防止に役立ちます ハローウィーンには子供がたくさん来ましたか? うちにはいつもの倍ぐらいの子供が訪れたので 毎年楽しみにしているハローウィーンの残り物のキャンディーが今年は少なくてがっかりです 松の会は 11 月にリバークリークカジノに行きました 軽い昼食のあとでカジノで運試しをしました 運の良かった会員もいました 我々夫婦は 2 時間カジノをしてプラスマイナスゼロでした 楽しんだだけ 本当はプラスです 来年は飛行場近くに出来るカジノに行きたいです 12 月には例会はありませんが クリスマスランチを一緒にする予定です 松の会は今年一年も楽しく過ごしました 来年もまたみんなで楽しく過ごせることを願っています ご存じでしょうが 松の会の例会は毎月第 4 水曜日に EJCA センターでおこないます 例会では昼食に日本の弁当を日本料理店に注文できます また例会とは別に毎月皆でいろいろなところにでかけます 参加希望者はピーター ワンまでご連絡ください petercwong@shaw.ca 電話 With no meeting in December, Club members will be treated to an early Christmas lunch. The Club will celebrate another successful year and welcome the new year in January. We invite you all to the Club s activities and meetings so you can see what a fun group we are. The Club meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except for December) at the EJCA Centre starting at 11 AM. Members are able to pre-order a special bento lunch most months but we do host special meal events from time to time. Depending on members interests, various monthly outings are planned for groups to attend (concerts, theatre events, local attractions, etc.). Please contact Club President, Peter C.
