1 Special Overseas Correspondent Report 海外特派員レポート Sophie Patterson (United Kingdom) ソフィアパターソン ( イギリス ) Worked as: Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) Place of Work: Izumigaoka High School;July, 2013 to July, 2014 職種: 元外国語指導助手 (ALT) 勤務先 : 都城泉ヶ丘高校 ;2013 年 8 月 ~2014 年 8 月 As I write this on 31 st December 2014, I think back to where I was one year ago. My family came to visit me in Japan, and at midnight we listened to a bell opposite our hotel in Kyoto ring 108 times. New Year in my home country Scotland involves a lot more fireworks, dancing and alcohol! Traditionally, we count down at the bells (midnight), and sing Auld Lang Syne. On 1 st January, we go first footing this means visiting relatives and friends and seeing who will be the first foot over everyone s doorstep. It s also tradition to bring with you a lump of coal as a gift to symbolise warmth and prosperity, and to say Lang may yer lum reek, which means Long may your chimney smoke. Some people also swim in the freezing Firth of Forth (the sea by my hometown Edinburgh) or do the loony dook, which basically translates from Scottish as the insane dip (I think the drinking from the night before serves as an anaesthetic to the cold for some..!) この作文を 2014 年 12 月 31 日に書いていくうちに自分が 1 年前にいた場所について考えます私の家族が私に会いに日本に来て京都で泊まっていたホテルの向かい側にある除夜の鐘が真夜中に 108 回鳴るのを聞きました故郷のスコットランドの年明けは沢山の花火踊りそしてアルコールが伴います伝統に従って the bells( 真夜中 ) をカウントダウンしオールドラングサインを歌います元日に first footing( 最初の足 ) というものをしますこれは親戚と友達を訪ねてそれぞれの家のドアステップに誰が第一歩を踏み入れるのかをみることです温かさと繁栄を象徴する石炭をお土産にさしあげ煙突から末永く煙が立ち上がりますようにを意味する Lang may yer lum reek を言う伝統もありますある人はエジンバラに面する冷たいフォース湾で泳ぎますこれは loony dook と呼ばれる慣習でスコットランド語で馬鹿げた水浴びを意味します ( 多分前日から飲んだアルコールが寒さの麻酔薬として役立つのではないかと思います ) However, I think back fondly to that quiet passing of the old year into the next. The following morning, we visited Fushimi Inari Taisha. The crowds stood shoulder to shoulder from the train station to well inside the shrine, and we met many people happy to be on holiday and who helped us understand the customs taking place around us. One man introduced me to his cat, which he d brought to along with the family on this important day, and then touted him up the mountain in a travel-case on his shoulder. That mixture of hospitality and novelty and the particular feeling that combination evoked is what endures from Japan

2 most potently for me. 私は昨年の年越しの静かな経過を恋しく思い返します翌朝我々は伏見稲荷大社に訪れました人群れは駅から神社の奥まで並んで休日のたくさんの幸せな人々は我々の周りで行われている慣行についての理解を助けてくれましたある人は私に彼の家族と一緒に連れてきたペットの猫を紹介しました彼はトラベルケースに猫を入れて肩に載せ山を登っていましたおもてなしと目新しさがそしてそれらが混じって呼び起こした特別な気分は自分に強力な印象を残しました When I returned to Edinburgh in August, I soon realised that Japan had made a big impression on my family too. In fact, I realised as soon as I arrived home from the airport my Dad had constructed a huge torii gate at our front gate to welcome me home! My parents had taken sushi-making classes, and were reading and watching as many books and movies about Japan as they could find. Apart from that, my first impression of home was adjusting to going out in public Posing with my Dad's 'welcome home' present! and being able to blend in to the crowd. How is the kanji? Every summer, Edinburgh hosts an 父のお帰りプレゼントとポーズ漢字はどうですか? international cultural festival including dance, comedy, theatre, books and music, and so the city was packed with faces, bodies and clothes of types from all over the world. At first, the variety was a little overwhelming and exhausting, in contrast to the mostly Japanese population of Miyazaki. 8 月にエジンバラに帰った時日本は私の家族にも深い印象を残したことにすぐ気づきました実は空港から家についた途端に分かりました父は大きい鳥居を表門に建てて私を迎えたのです! 両親は寿司づくり教室に通って沢山の日本関連書籍や映画を読んだり見たりしていましたその他にもエジンバラに対する第一印象は外に出て人波に溶け込むことに慣れることでした毎夏エジンバラは踊りコメディ演劇文学音楽を含む国際文化祭りを開催するので町は世界中の顔つき体型そして服装でいっぱいでした帰国して最初のころほとんど日本人で成り立っている宮崎と対照的でエジンバラの多様性は私を圧倒し疲れさせる物でした After a few weeks at home, I started a new job in a boarding school near London called Wycombe Abbey. I ve lived on the other side of the world! I thought. Moving cities will be easy! However, moving via the big city was quite a shock. I remember queuing for a taxi outside Kings Cross, the biggest London train station, surprised that instead of politely waiting and bowing, people were barging in front of me! An old man tapped my arm and told me, You have to be forceful in London! In the coming weeks, it took some time to adjust to the louder, more assertive manners of the people around me, even though British people traditionally pride themselves on their orderly queues! I found myself missing random things like the neatness and stylishness of people on the street in Japan, the tidiness of the streets themselves,

3 efficiency of transport, and the newness and excitement that even a trip to the kombini or use of a new Japanese word could provoke. Certain habits, like drinking green tea and eating salad with chopsticks, I find can t be shaken. 里帰りをして数週間後ロンドンの近くでワイクームアビーという全寮制の学校で新しい仕事を始めました地球の反対側で住んだから都会での移動も易しいはずと考えていましたしかし大都会を移動するのは大きいショックでした私はロンドンで一番大きい電車の駅であるキングスクロス駅の外でタクシーに乗りに順番を待っていたことを思い返します人々が礼儀正しく待ってお辞儀する代わりに自分の前に割り Finding Japanese cuisine in London! 込む様子に驚きました年配の方が私の腕をぽんとたたロンドンにある和食のレストランいてロンドンでは力強くないといけないよ! と言いましたイギリス人は元々整然とした人列に誇りを持っているとは言いながらその後数週間自分の周りにいる人々の騒々しく自己主張の強いマナーに慣れるのに時間がかかりました日本の街で見かける人々の清潔さや優雅さ道路の整然とした様子公共交通の効率性コンビニに行くこととか新しい日本語を使うことで引き起こされる新しさや興奮などふとしたことで寂しく思っている自分に気づきました緑茶を飲むこととか箸でサラダを食べることなど特定の習慣が抜けないことに気づきました However, I had a big event in British politics to distract me: the referendum on whether Scotland and England would become separate countries! As someone with an English father and a Scottish mother, born in England but raised in Scotland, I was very anxious that we remain a United Kingdom. However, having lived abroad for a year, I felt much more subjective about the issue, and I think this international perspective is one of the most valuable things we can gain from travelling to one anothers countries. Fortunately (in my view), the overall vote was no and I could avoid feeling like a foreigner again so soon (this time in my own country)! しかしイギリスの政治でおきた大きなイベントが私の気をそらしましたスコットランドとイングランドが別の国になるのかについて国民投票が行われたのです! イングランド出身の父とスコットランド出身の母がいてイングランドで生まれスコットランドで育った者として私は両国が連合王国として残るのか心配でしたが海外に一年住んでいたことから私はこの問題のことについてもっと主体的に考えましたこのような国際的感覚こそが海外旅行で得る最も大事なものだと思います幸いにも ( 個人的な見解ですが ) 投票の全体的な結果は反対だったので今度は自国で外国人の気分になるのを避けることがすぐ出来ました At Wycombe Abbey, I work with alumni, organising events, producing magazines, and helping raise money for scholarships and other school projects. When I first started working there, I found it difficult not to bow to the Headmistress of the school! I also really missed certain Japanese phrases, especially

4 Sugoi and Yabai! However, I taught my co-workers Otsukaresamadeshita so that we can thank each other for working hard from time to time! Teaching in Japan was my first full-time job, so it was interesting to compare working cultures between there and the UK. I ve found that in the UK, it is sometimes easier to accomplish tasks quickly, since there are fewer people to check permission with, but I also miss the commitment to school in Japan and all the work parties! ワイクームアビーで私は卒業生と働きながらイベントを企画して定期刊行物を発刊し奨学金と他の学校の事業のための募金を手伝います最初そこで働き始めた時校長先生にお辞儀しないようにするのが大変でしたしすごいとかやばいなど決まった日本語の表現が話せないのがとても残念でしたしかしお互い一生懸命仕事していることに時々感謝するよう私は同僚にお疲れ様でしたを教えました日本での教職は私にとって初めてのフルタイムの仕事でしたので日本とイギリスの職場環境を比べるのはとても興味深いです気づいたのはイギリスでは許可を求める人が少ないので業務を早く終わらせるのが簡単ですが同時に私は日本で学校の業務に尽くしていたことや飲み会が恋しいです One thing I still carry with me however is the friendship of people I met in Japan, both from Miyazaki and teachers from English-speaking countries all over the world (the Line app stickers are great for maintaining long-distance friendship!) I meet several ex-alts in London at weekends, and exchanged Christmas presents with those still in Miyazaki. In February, I ll visit another ex-jet in Oregon, USA (the travel bug hasn't quite worn off yet). I still with several of my students and teachers, and encourage them to visit the UK so I can show them the same omotenashi they showed me. Likewise, I still have a huge list of things to see in Japan the snow and ice festivals on Hokkaido, sakura and geisha dances in Kyoto, discovering more of the sprawling Tokyo, and exploring northern Japan, to name a few. しかし今も身につけているのは日本で出会った宮崎の人や世界中の英語圏から At my leaving party with the other English teachers 来た先生達との友情です (LINEのスタン from my school プは長距離関係を維持するのにとても役学校の英語教員と一緒に送別会にてに立ちますね!) 元 ALT 達と時々週末にロンドンで会合してまだ宮崎にいる人々とクリスマスのプレゼントを交換しました 2 月にはアメリカのオレゴンにいる元 JET に訪れます ( 旅行への熱意はまだ下がっていません ) 何人かの先生学生達とまだメールでやりとりをしながら彼らが私に表したおもてなしを今度は私が彼らに見せたいのでイギリスに来るように勧めます同じく北海道の雪氷祭り京都の桜と芸者の踊り東京近郊での探検東北への旅など私が日本で見たいもののリストはまだまだいっぱいです

5 When I returned to Miyakonojo in January 2014 from my New Year travelling, I was delighted to be greeted in the train station, omiyage shop and taxi by characteristic Miyazaki kindness, in contrast with the famous cities I'd visited. I felt welcomed back to my honourary home prefecture, and even now, will forever firmly insist that Miyazaki the land of surfing, mango products and sun - is the unsung gem of Japan 年 1 月に年始の旅から都城に帰ったとき今まで訪れた有名な場所とは違い駅お土産の店タクシーで宮崎ならではの優しさで挨拶されて嬉しかったですそして今もなお私の誇らしい宮崎県に戻ると歓迎されたことを思います私はサーフィンマンゴー太陽の地宮崎県が日本のまだあまり知られていない宝石だということをこれからも強く主張したいと思います
