2 Language Use and Language Awareness of Korean Returnees from Japan and Foreign Residents in Jeju Island in South Korea Younghee KO, Chiharu KON As a result of continuous immigration and emigration, Jeju Island in South Korea is characterized by the existence of complicated communities in the society, including foreigners under study or work visas, families of international marriages and returnees from Japan i.e. so-called zainichi Koreans. While there has been an increasing amount of studies of foreign residents in Jeju Island in recent years, this paper analyzes the relationship between language use and language awareness by focusing on two types of foreign residents, namely, Jeju natives who returned from Japan and foreigners originated in other countries. On the basis of interviews of seven informants in each group, we examined the features of their actual language use. Our findings indicated that although both groups of informants tend to use Korean as their primary language in daily life, their individual experiences, ethnicities, and current language environment largely affect their evaluation of how to use the language
