2 Bird and mammal specimens in the Swedish Museum of Natural History originating from Hokkaido University: Bergman s collection and a specimen gifted from Professor Saburo Hatta Ryuichi Masuda i,ii, Takehiro Sato ii, Olavi Grönwall iii, and Masaru Kato iv Introduction In this paper, we report the specimens of birds and mammals originating from Hokkaido University, which are currently preserved in the Swedish Museum of Natural History. In addition, we discuss the process of transportation and historical values on the specimens. We currently study zoogeographical history of mammalian fauna of the Hokkaido Island, Japan. When considering how animals immigrated and fauna has been established on Hokkaido, it is essential to include zoogeography on the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka Peninsula. Around 1930 when the Kuril Islands were in the Japanese territories, a Swedish naturalist, Mr. Sten Bergman, had his expedition on the islands, and then collected various kinds of animals there. At present, the animal specimens collected by Mr. Bergman are very important materials for studies of zoogeography and natural history of the areas. Therefore, we have thought that it was necessary to survey and analyze the animal specimens of Bergman s collection. Bergman (1948) described in his book that he sent animal specimens to Sweden during his expedition to the Kuril Islands. In addition, in this book he mentioned that he visited Professor Tetsuo Inukai of the Hokkaido University Natural History Museum (HUNHM) at Sapporo in 1930 and exchanged his bird specimens for specimens of Professor Inukai. Actually the bird specimens gifted from Bergman are still preserved in good conditions at HUNHM. The rest of Bergman s collection is housed in the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM), and includes specimens that he collected during expeditions in the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka Peninsula, Korean Peninsula, and New Guinea. Therefore, we started examination of animal specimens of Bergman s collection at NRM. Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) Two of the authors (Masuda and Sato) visited NRM (Fig. 1) in December, This museum is located at northern Stockholm and next to the campus of Stockholm University. The NRM was founded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1819, but the collections dates back to 1739 when the Royal Academy was founded. This museum has been independent from the Royal Swedish Academy since The general exhibition includes areas of geology, zoology, botany, and the natural environment. About 700,000 people visit the exhibitions every year. When the two authors visited the museum, the special exhibition From Linneaus to DNA was held, where the Linneaus contribution to taxonomy and the history of taxonomy were shown. Professor Carl von Linné (Swedish name of Linnaeus: ) was a Swedish medical doctor and taxonomist who established the binomial nomenclature of scientific names of organisms. This museum was visited by the Emperor and Empress of Japan in May, The NRM has about 250 staff members and high research activities, in addition to education of natural history to citizens. The Zoology Division has three departments; Departments of Vertebrate Zoology, Invertebrate Zoology, and Entomology. In the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, the researchers study natural history of mammals, birds, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. The website of NRM is available: Sten Bergman as naturalist Sten Bergman ( ) is a well-known adventurer and naturalist of Sweden. He was an associated researcher at the department of Vertebrate Zoology and employed as deputy for shorter periods during several years. Otherwise he earned his living through lectures about his journeys. The NRM keeps his portrait in oil by Finnish-Swedish artist Johannes Snellman (Fig. 2). In addition to the Kuril Islands, he made expeditions in the Kamchatka Peninsula (Bergman, 1923, 1924), Korean Peninsula (Bergman, 1937), and New Guinea (Bergman, 1950, 1954, 1959, 1968), and his travel reports was published as books in Swedish. The expedition book of the Kamchatka Peninsula was translated to Japanese. To our knowledge, expedition books of the Korean Peninsula and New Guinea have not been translated to Japanese. In each book, Bergman described details on natural environments, fauna, flora, and manners and customs of the native people. Especially, he was very interested in collecting birds and made stuffed specimens. His bird collections from New Guinea and East Asia to the Kamchatka Peninsula is large and has a great ornithological importance. Hokkaido University Natural History Museum (HUNHM) The HUNHM originated from the Museum of Kaitakushi (former government of Hokkaido). In 1882, the new building of the museum was build at the center of Sapporo City, and it is currently used for the exhibition corner of the Botanic Garden of University. In 1884, the museum was transferred to the Sapporo Agricultural College which developed to Hokkaido University (Fig. 3). During the period of the Museum of Kaitakushi, they concentrated on collecting materials of industries and cultures. After it was transferred to the Sapporo Agricultural College, Directors Saburo Hatta, Tetsuo Inukai, and Hisashi Abe made efforts at collecting animal specimens. Especially, the specimen collection including more than 10,000 birds is one of the largest ornithological collections in Japan. The specimens have been collected as follows. Mr. Shojiro Murata collected bird specimens from Hokkaido and Sakhalin from 1890 to 1910 (Karafuto-cho, 1914; Murata, 1900a, 1900b, 1901a, 1901b, 1902; Hatta and Murata, 1905). The bird collection of Captain Thomas Blakiston (an English naturalist who stayed at Hakodate, southern Hokkaido) was transferred from the Museum of Hakodate in 1908 (Kato and Ichikawa, 2002). Specimen exchanges with the American Natural History Museum and the Smithsonian Institution were actively done (Kato and Ichikawa, 2004). Specimen collections from Taiwan and Southeast Asia were also made (Hokkaido University, 1926). Moreover, there have been many donations of additional specimens collected within Japan. There are currently three staff members in HUNHM, who work on researches and supporting activities. In 1920 s, this museum had the second most visitors of the Japanese museums (Hokkaido University, 1926). The reason why Bergman visited this museum and exchanged the bird specimens with those of this museum is likely that his expedition was done on the Kuril Islands near Hokkaido, and that Inukai as famous zoologist was working at this museum. In addition, another probable reason is that this museum had established a nice collection of bird specimens. Bergman s collection and stuffed specimens of birds collected on the Hokkaido and Kuril Islands Of Bergman s collection preserved at NRM, more than 900 specimens were collected on the Kuril Islands. They are currently preserved in wooden shelves and are still in good conditions as scientific specimens. In addition, there are 50 bird specimens (comprising 14 species) from Hokkaido. All of them were small birds that Bergman received from Professor Inukai - 2 -

4 Bulletin of Botaic Garden Hokkaido Univ., Vol. 8 (2008) (Director of HUNHM at that time) when he visited Sapporo in 1930, in exchange for specimens collected on the Kuril Islands. The species and numbers of the specimens from HUNHM are shown in Table 1. The specimens are found to be preserved in good conditions (Fig. 4a). Each of them has specimen labels (described in Japanese) of HUNHM as well as those of NRM (Fig. 4b). On the latter ones, signatures ink-written by Bergman were seen. Because in Hokkaido University there are no records on the species and numbers of specimens given to Bergman, information of bird specimens found at NRM is very important for historical study between the two museums. In addition, HUNHM preserves the specimens that were given from Bergman (Fig. 5a). They are all stuffed specimens of small birds that were collected on the Kunashiri Island (southern Kuril Islands) and have specimen labels where the name of Sten Bergman was specially printed (Fig. 5b). They are 43 specimens comprising 11 species (Table 2). The labels show that they were collected on the Kunashiri Island between 1929 and Ten of the 11 species given by Bergman to Professor Inukai, were also among 14 species given back by Professor Inukai in return. Only one species, a marsh tit (Parus palustris hensoi) in Bergman s collection was exchanged for a different species in HUNHM; a willow tit (P. montanus restrictus) (Tables 1 and 2). However, because the marsh tit is morphologically very similar to the willow tit, a re-examination of the two specimens is warranted. The high number of common species and the similar number of specimens between the two collections is in accordance with Bergman s own words at page 227 of his book (Bergman, 1948): During the autumn stay in Kunashiri, I made a trip to Sapporo City which is the culture center of Hokkaido and where a large university is situated. In the botanic garden you find a zoological museum and in one of the museum buildings you find a quite large number of northern Japanese animals. Here I made some studies, since Professor Inukai of zoology kindly allowed me to investigate the materials. He also gave me some birds from northern Japan in exchange for birds from the Kuril Islands since I needed some of the former for comparison with mine (translated to English from Swedish). Skull specimens of the brown bear from Hokkaido and Sweden In addition to the bird specimens, one complete skull of the male brown bear (Ursus arctos) collected on the Hokkaido Island is preserved at NRM (Fig. 6a). It is considered to be of a young adult,. The sign ^ above the last o in the word Hokkaido on the specimen label (Fig. 6b) indicates that the label was written in Japan, as this is how Hokkaido is spelled with Roman letters in Japan. Moreover, the annual report of NRM (Kungliga svenska vetenskapsakademin, 1934) written in Swedish says that one skull of the brown bear collected at Nishibetsu of Hokkaido was gifted from the Sapporo Museum (meaning HUNHM). It shows that in 1933 (one year before the annual report) it could be received by NRM. In addition, one skull of the brown bear from Sweden is preserved in HUNHM (Fig. 7a,b). Although no information when and how the Swedish bear skull was received by Hokkaido University is available, it might have been exchanged for the Hokkaido bear skull in the collection of NRM. Annual reports of Hokkaido University (1931, 1932, 1933) say that Inukai was actively collecting specimens of the brown bear on the Hokkaido Island. A skeleton specimen of the finless porpoise at NRM The NRM also holds one skeleton specimen of the finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) (Fig. 8a) that was donated to the museum by Professor Saburo Hatta (Director of HUNHM between ). The specimen label written in Swedish (Fig. 8b) shows that the skeleton was gifted by Professor S. Hatta and mounted by a taxidermist A. Jansson. Because Hatta named Hatta s line as zoogeographical demarcation for the Soya Strait separating fauna between the Hokkaido and Sakhalin Islands (Hatta, 1910, 1913), his name is still well-known in zoogeographical research areas. He stayed in Germany to study biology of lampreys (Petromyzon). However, because World War I began during his stay there, he had to return to Sapporo. The annual report of NRM says that Hatta stayed at NRM for research of lampreys and whales for three days in 1915 and visited the whale collections for four days in Therefore, on the way back to Sapporo, he likely visited - 3 -

5 Masuda et al.: Bird and mammal specimens in the Swedish Museum of Natural History originating from Hokkaido University Stockholm from the end of 1915 until the beginning of Otherwise, he may have visited NRM twice (once in 1915 and separately once again in 1916). Anyhow he gifted the skeleton specimen of the finless porpoise to NRM. However, at present it is unknown why he gifted it and how he prepared it. We were very impressed that a Japanese researcher had been given the opportunity to visit Europe at that time to study natural history of animals. Moreover, we can say that Hokkaido University, which permitted him to do so, had foresight, leading to current development of natural history researches in this university. In HUNHM there is a specimen of the finless porpoise that was stuffed some time before Hatta visited Europe. As there is currently no skeleton associated with this specimen in the collection in Sapporo, the skeleton may have been brought to NRM by him. In the future, the skeleton in Stockholm and the stuffed specimen in Sapporo should be compared morphologically and tested with a genetic analysis, to examine if these two specimens come from the same individual or not. In the present paper, we presented animal specimens which were exchanged between Hokkaido University & Professor Saburo Hatta and Swedish Museum of Natural History & Mr. Sten Bergman. Since Bergman s collection includes additional specimens that are important for researches of zoogeography and natural history, it is required to continue to examine them. 10 スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 において 見 出 された 札 幌 農 学 校 および 北 海 道 大 学 由 来 の 鳥 類 哺 乳 類 標 本 : ベルクマン 標 本 および 八 田 三 郎 寄 贈 標 本 について 増 田 隆 一 i,ii 佐 藤 丈 寛 ii Olavi Grönwall iii 加 藤 克 iv はじめに 本 稿 では スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 に 所 蔵 されている 北 海 道 大 学 ( 東 北 帝 国 大 学 農 科 大 学 および 北 海 道 帝 国 大 学 時 代 )から 寄 贈 または 交 換 された 鳥 類 と 哺 乳 類 の 標 本 について 紹 介 する あわせて 現 在 までに 判 明 している それらの 標 本 の 寄 贈 交 換 経 緯 と 歴 史 的 価 値 について 報 告 する 筆 者 らは 現 在 日 本 列 島 の 動 物 地 理 や 動 物 相 の 多 様 性 変 遷 に 関 する 研 究 に 取 り 組 んでいる 北 海 道 の 動 物 地 理 的 歴 史 を 考 える 場 合 千 島 列 島 やカムチャツカ 半 島 からの 動 物 の 渡 来 を 考 慮 することが 重 要 であるが 日 本 から 一 般 人 の 千 島 列 島 への 渡 航 は 制 限 されているため その 地 域 の 動 物 分 布 調 査 は 立 ち 遅 れているのが 現 状 である 一 方 千 島 列 島 が 日 本 領 であった 1930 年 前 後 に スウェーデンの 探 検 家 ステン ベルクマンが 千 島 列 島 を 探 検 し その 際 に 種 々の 動 物 標 本 を 採 集 したことが 知 られていた 現 在 となってはそのような 標 本 は 極 めて 貴 重 な 資 料 となってお り 動 物 地 理 学 および 博 物 学 の 研 究 のためにも ベルクマンが 収 集 した 標 本 を 詳 細 に 調 べる 必 要 性 を 筆 者 らは 感 じ ていた ベルクマンの 著 書 千 島 紀 行 ( 加 納 一 郎 訳, 1992) には 彼 自 身 が 千 島 列 島 で 採 集 した 動 物 標 本 を 祖 国 へ 送 った と 記 載 されていることから それらの 標 本 が 現 在 もスウェーデンに 保 管 されているのではないかと 考 えた また この 著 書 には 1930 年 にベルクマンが 北 海 道 帝 国 大 学 ( 北 大 ) 植 物 園 の 博 物 館 を 訪 れ 当 時 の 犬 飼 哲 夫 教 授 と 標 本 交 換 したことが 掲 載 されている 事 実 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 ( 現 在 の 正 式 名 称 は 北 海 道 大 学 北 方 生 物 圏 フィールド 科 学 センター 植 物 園 )には ベルクマンから 譲 渡 された 千 島 産 の 鳥 類 標 本 が 大 切 に 保 管 されている さらに 北 大 側 からスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 に 照 会 したところ 千 島 列 島 カムチャツカ 半 島 朝 鮮 半 島 ニューギニア 産 等 の 鳥 類 を 中 心 とするベルクマン 標 本 が 収 蔵 され 北 大 からベルクマンに 譲 渡 された 北 海 道 産 の 鳥 類 標 本 も 含 まれて いることが 判 明 した そこで スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 においてベルクマン 標 本 を 調 査 することとなった スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 について 著 者 ら( 増 田 および 佐 藤 )は 2008 年 12 月 にスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 (Fig. 1)を 訪 問 した このスウェーデン 最 大 の 自 然 史 系 博 物 館 は ストックホルム 中 央 駅 から 北 部 方 面 行 き 地 下 鉄 の 四 つ 目 の 駅 Universitet で 下 車 し 徒 歩 数 分 のところに 位 置 し ストックホルム 大 学 のキャンパスに 隣 接 している スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 は 1819 年 にスウェーデン 王 立 アカデミーによって 設 立 された 収 蔵 標 本 は スウェー デン 王 立 アカデミーが 設 立 された 1739 年 以 来 王 立 アカデミーが 収 集 してきたコレクションが 基 盤 となっている 1965 年 には 自 然 史 博 物 館 は 王 立 アカデミーから 独 立 した 自 然 史 博 物 館 ではスウェーデンを 中 心 とする 地 質 動 植 物 人 類 考 古 自 然 環 境 等 に 関 する 一 般 展 示 が 行 われ ており 年 間 7 万 人 以 上 の 入 場 者 がある 筆 者 らが 訪 れた 時 には 特 別 展 リンネから DNA が 行 われていた 生 物 の 学 名 の 二 命 名 法 を 確 立 したスウェーデンの 分 類 学 者 カール リンネ(Carl von Linné, 年 )の 分 類 学 へ i 北 海 道 大 学 創 成 科 学 共 同 研 究 機 構 ii 北 海 道 大 学 大 学 院 理 学 院 自 然 史 科 学 専 攻 iii スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 脊 椎 動 物 部 門 iv 北 海 道 大 学 北 方 生 物 圏 フィールド 科 学 センター 植 物 園 - 9 -

11 増 田 隆 一 ほか:スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 において 見 出 された 札 幌 農 学 校 および 北 海 道 大 学 由 来 の 鳥 類 哺 乳 類 標 本 の 寄 与 から 最 先 端 分 野 の 分 子 系 統 学 や 生 物 多 様 性 科 学 にいたるまでの 歴 史 がわかりやすく 展 示 されていた さすが にリンネが 生 まれ 育 った 国 である また 筆 者 らが 訪 れた 年 の 5 月 には 日 本 の 天 皇 皇 后 両 陛 下 もこの 博 物 館 をご 訪 問 になられたとのことであった スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 の 全 スタッフは 250 名 程 で 展 示 普 及 活 動 のみならず 研 究 活 動 も 活 発 に 行 われている 部 門 として 研 究 部 門 植 物 学 部 門 動 物 学 部 門 古 生 物 学 部 門 地 質 学 部 門 環 境 汚 染 研 究 部 門 分 子 分 類 学 部 門 などがあり 複 数 の 建 物 にまたがっている たとえば 動 物 学 部 門 は さらに 脊 椎 動 物 分 野 無 脊 椎 動 物 分 野 昆 虫 分 野 に 分 かれている 脊 椎 動 物 分 野 では 哺 乳 類 鳥 類 魚 類 両 生 爬 虫 類 の 専 門 スタッフ( 研 究 員 学 芸 員 ) が 研 究 と 標 本 管 理 を 行 っている 今 回 の 調 査 では 哺 乳 類 担 当 および 鳥 類 担 当 においてお 世 話 になった なお ス ウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 のウェブサイト( 設 置 されている ステン ベルクマンについて ステン ベルクマン(Sten Bergman, )はスウェーデンの 著 名 な 探 検 家 であり 一 時 期 スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 の 職 員 でもあったとのことで その 館 内 研 究 棟 の 廊 下 の 壁 には 肖 像 画 (Fig. 2)が 掛 けられていた ベル クマンは 千 島 列 島 以 外 にもカムチャツカ 半 島 朝 鮮 半 島 ニューギニアにおいて 探 検 を 行 い 各 々の 紀 行 録 をスウ ェーデン 語 の 著 書 として 著 わしている カムチャツカ 紀 行 については 本 仙 太 郎 による 訳 本 カムチャツカ 探 検 記 (1935) が 出 版 されている 著 者 らが 知 る 限 り 朝 鮮 半 島 とニューギニアの 紀 行 著 書 は 日 本 語 には 翻 訳 されていない 各 々の 探 検 において ベルクマンはその 土 地 の 自 然 環 境 動 植 物 ならびに 民 俗 習 慣 にいたるまで 詳 細 な 観 察 記 録 を 綴 っている ベルクマンは 各 地 の 調 査 中 に 主 に 鳥 類 の 捕 獲 と 仮 剥 製 標 本 の 作 製 を 熱 心 に 行 った その 膨 大 な 数 に 及 ぶ 標 本 は ニューギニアおよび 東 アジアからカムチャツカ 半 島 にかけて 分 布 する 鳥 類 の 貴 重 なコレクションとし てスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 に 所 蔵 されている 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 について 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 は 1877 年 に 開 拓 使 が 設 置 した 札 幌 仮 博 物 場 を 起 源 とする 1882 年 に 現 在 植 物 園 が 存 在 する 札 幌 中 心 部 に 新 館 が 設 置 され 札 幌 博 物 場 となった この 新 館 が 現 在 も 一 般 展 示 室 として 利 用 されている 博 物 館 であ る(Fig. 3) 1884 年 に 札 幌 博 物 場 は 札 幌 農 学 校 に 移 管 され 組 織 の 改 変 に 伴 う 名 称 変 更 がたびたびあったものの 現 在 に 至 るまで 北 海 道 大 学 の 附 属 施 設 として 活 動 を 継 続 している 開 拓 使 の 博 物 館 時 代 は 産 業 文 化 資 料 の 収 集 に 重 点 が 置 かれていたが 札 幌 農 学 校 移 管 後 は 八 田 三 郎 犬 飼 哲 夫 阿 部 永 らの 著 名 な 動 物 学 者 を 館 長 に 迎 え 動 物 学 資 料 が 充 実 することとなった なかでも 1 万 点 を 超 える 鳥 類 標 本 は 日 本 国 内 有 数 のコレクションを 誇 る 1890 年 代 から 1910 年 代 にかけて 精 力 的 に 北 海 道 内 及 び 樺 太 (サハリン) の 鳥 類 標 本 を 収 集 した 村 田 庄 次 郎 の 標 本 ( 樺 太 庁, 1914; 村 田, 1900a, 1900b, 1901a, 1901b, 1902; 八 田 村 田, 1905) を 中 心 に 1908 年 に 函 館 の 博 物 館 から 散 逸 しつつあったトーマス W ブラキストンのコレクションを 一 括 して 受 入 れたこと( 加 藤 市 川, 2002) アメリカ 自 然 史 博 物 館 スミソニアン 協 会 などとの 標 本 交 換 に 力 を 入 れていたこと ( 加 藤 市 川, 2004) 台 湾 から 東 南 アジアの 鳥 類 標 本 の 収 集 にも 力 を 入 れていたこと( 北 海 道 帝 國 大 學, 1926)がこ れまで 報 告 されているが 大 学 内 外 の 関 係 者 からの 寄 贈 も 数 多 い 現 在 は スタッフ 3 名 で 北 海 道 大 学 を 中 心 とした 研 究 支 援 活 動 を 中 心 とする 小 さな 博 物 館 であるが 1920 年 代 に は 入 館 者 数 が 国 内 二 位 であったともいわれる 国 内 有 数 の 博 物 館 であった( 北 海 道 帝 國 大 學, 1926) ベルクマンが 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 を 訪 問 し 標 本 を 交 換 した 理 由 は 彼 の 調 査 が 千 島 列 島 で 行 われたこと 犬 飼 哲 夫 という 著 名 な 動 物 学 者 が 所 属 していたことも 理 由 の 一 つではあっただろうが 充 実 した 標 本 が 所 蔵 されている 博 物 館 であったとい う 点 も 理 由 として 挙 げられるだろう ベルクマン 標 本 に 見 られた 北 海 道 産 および 千 島 産 の 鳥 類 仮 剥 製 標 本 スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 に 収 蔵 されているベルクマン 標 本 のうち 千 島 列 島 において 採 集 された 鳥 類 の 仮 剥 製

12 北 大 植 物 園 研 究 紀 要 第 8 号 2008 年 だけでもその 標 本 数 は 900 個 体 以 上 に 及 ぶ それらの 標 本 は 鳥 類 標 本 収 蔵 室 における 木 製 の 標 本 棚 に 丁 寧 に 保 管 さ れていた その 中 に 14 種 50 個 体 分 の 北 海 道 産 鳥 類 の 仮 剥 製 標 本 が 収 蔵 されていた それらは 1930 年 秋 にベル クマンが 札 幌 の 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 ( 当 時 は 北 海 道 帝 国 大 学 農 学 部 博 物 館 )を 訪 れた 際 に 標 本 交 換 として 犬 飼 哲 夫 ( 農 学 部 教 授 と 博 物 館 主 任 を 兼 務 していた)からベルクマンへ 譲 渡 された 小 型 鳥 類 標 本 である その 種 名 および 個 体 数 を Table 1 に 示 した これらの 鳥 類 標 本 は 良 好 な 状 態 で 保 存 されており(Fig. 4a) 各 標 本 には 札 幌 博 物 館 ( 現 在 の 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 )のオリジナルの 標 本 ラベルならびにその 情 報 に 基 づいたスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 独 自 の 標 本 ラベルが 付 されていた(Fig. 4b) 後 者 の 標 本 ラベルにはベルクマン 自 筆 の 署 名 が 書 かれていた インクの 状 態 か ら 判 断 すると これらのラベルの 記 載 にはすべて 万 年 筆 (またはインクを 用 いたペン)が 使 われたものと 思 われる ベルクマンへ 譲 渡 された 鳥 類 標 本 の 種 名 や 個 体 数 の 記 録 は 北 大 に 残 っていないため 今 回 の 調 査 により 明 らかにな ったスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 所 蔵 の 標 本 情 報 は 極 めて 貴 重 なものとなった 一 方 ベルクマンから 北 大 へ 譲 渡 された 千 島 産 の 鳥 類 仮 剥 製 標 本 も 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 において 良 好 な 状 態 で 保 管 されている(Fig. 5a) ステン ベルクマンの 名 が 印 刷 された 専 用 の 標 本 ラベルも 付 随 している(Fig. 5b) 11 種 43 個 体 に 及 ぶこれらの 標 本 を Table 2 にリストアップした ラベルの 記 録 によると これらの 標 本 は 1929 年 から 1930 年 にかけて 南 千 島 の 国 後 島 (クナシリ 島 )において 採 集 されたものである その 11 種 中 10 種 は 北 大 からベルクマ ン 氏 へ 譲 渡 された 北 海 道 産 鳥 類 標 本 の 種 (Table 1)と 重 複 している 残 りの1 種 であるハシブトガラはコガラと 形 態 的 に 極 めて 類 似 しており これらの 標 本 における 両 種 の 分 類 は 再 検 討 する 必 要 があるかもしれない いずれにし ても 北 大 とスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 との 間 の 標 本 種 の 高 い 共 通 性 やその 標 本 数 (スウェーデン 所 蔵 50 個 体 およ び 北 大 所 蔵 43 個 体 )は ベルクマン 著 千 島 紀 行 ( 加 納 一 郎 訳, 1992) の 最 後 のページに 書 かれている 北 日 本 の 鳥 類 と 私 が 千 島 で 得 たおなじものをいくつももっていた 鳥 の 標 本 とを 交 換 することもききとどけられた ことと 矛 盾 しない 北 海 道 産 ヒグマ 頭 骨 およびスウェーデン 産 ヒグマ 頭 骨 標 本 スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 において 北 海 道 産 鳥 類 標 本 のデータベースを 調 べる 過 程 で 偶 然 にも 北 海 道 産 のヒ グマ 頭 骨 標 本 (Fig. 6a)が 収 蔵 されていることが 判 明 した その 標 本 は 頭 蓋 骨 および 下 顎 がそろった 比 較 的 若 齢 と 思 われるオス 個 体 であり 標 本 状 態 は 良 好 であった この 標 本 には 頭 骨 以 外 の 骨 格 は 付 随 していなかった その 標 本 ラベルにタイプされた Hokkaido の 最 後 のアルファベット o の 上 には 山 線 (^)が 見 られる(Fig. 6b)が こ れは 日 本 独 特 のローマ 字 表 記 である よって この 標 本 ラベルは 日 本 でタイプされたものと 考 えてよいであろう また ラベルには 書 かれていなかった 情 報 であるが スウェーデン 語 で 記 されたスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 の 1934 年 の 年 鑑 において ヒグマ 頭 骨 標 本 の 採 集 地 は 北 海 道 西 別 ( 現 在 の 別 海 町 本 別 海 )で 札 幌 博 物 館 から 寄 贈 された と 記 録 されている 本 稿 著 者 の Grönwall 博 士 によると その 前 年 (1933 年 ) 頃 にスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 が 受 け 入 れたものと 思 われるということである 一 方 現 在 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 が 所 蔵 する 数 多 くのヒグマ 頭 骨 標 本 の 中 から スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 の 標 本 ラベルをもつスウェーデン 産 ヒグマ 頭 骨 1 個 を 見 出 した(Fig. 7) 北 大 がそのヒグマ 頭 骨 を 受 け 取 った 時 期 や 経 緯 に 関 する 記 録 がないことは 残 念 であるが 上 述 のスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 に 収 蔵 されている 北 海 道 産 ヒグマ 頭 骨 と 標 本 交 換 した 可 能 性 がある 当 時 の 北 海 道 帝 国 大 学 年 鑑 ( 北 海 道 帝 國 大 學, 1931, 1932, 1933)には 犬 飼 を 中 心 として ヒグマの 標 本 を 収 集 していたことが 記 されており その 一 環 として 犬 飼 教 授 はベルクマンにスウェー デン 産 ヒグマの 頭 骨 標 本 の 提 供 をもちかけたのではないかと 推 測 される スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 における 日 本 産 スナメリ 全 身 骨 格 標 本 東 北 帝 国 大 学 農 科 大 学 教 授 であった 八 田 三 郎 がスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 へ 寄 贈 した 日 本 産 スナメリ( 学 名 Neophocaena phocaenoides)の 全 身 骨 格 標 本 (Fig. 8a)も 発 見 された この 標 本 は 大 型 哺 乳 類 標 本 収 蔵 室 の 大 きなガ ラスケースの 中 に 他 の 骨 格 標 本 とともに 並 べられていた 標 本 ラベル(Fig. 8b)には この 骨 格 標 本 が 八 田 から 寄

Jansson が 骨 格 を 組 み 立 てたことがスウェーデン 語 で 記 されていた 良 好 な 状 態 で 保 管 され 全 身 骨 格 の 組 み 立 てもしっかりとしていた 八 田 は 宗 谷 海 峡 を 北 海 道 とサハリンの 動 物 相 を 分 ける 動 物 地 理 境 界 線 八 田 線 と 名 づけた( 八 田, 1910)ため 動 物 地 理 学 において 現 在 もその 名 が 知 られている ドイツへ 留 学 しヤツメウナギの 研 究 に 取 り 組 んでいた 八 田 は 第 一 次 世 界 大 戦 が 始 まると 帰 国 した スウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 年 鑑 の 記 録 には 八 田 は 1915 年 に 3 日 間 ヤツメウ ナギと 鯨 類 の 研 究 のために 1916 年 に 4 日 間 鯨 類 コレクションの 研 究 のために 同 博 物 館 を 訪 問 したとある その 時 期 は 八 田 がドイツから 帰 国 する 時 期 にあたるので 日 本 への 帰 路 の 1915 年 末 から 1916 年 初 めにかけてストックホ ルムを 訪 問 したと 思 われる さもなければ 1915 年 に 1 度 そして 1916 年 に 再 訪 したのかもしれない スウェーデ ン 自 然 史 博 物 館 年 鑑 によれば 訪 問 時 に 八 田 はスナメリ 骨 格 標 本 を 寄 贈 したと 記 録 されている しかし その 寄 贈 の 経 緯 や 寄 贈 するためにあらかじめ 札 幌 からスナメリ 骨 格 標 本 を 準 備 して 渡 航 したのかなどの 点 は 今 のところ 不 明 である いずれにしても その 時 代 に 動 物 の 自 然 史 研 究 のために 札 幌 から 遥 かヨーロッパへ 留 学 した 研 究 者 がいたことに 著 者 らは 深 く 感 動 している さらに その 留 学 を 認 めた 当 時 の 北 大 に 高 い 先 見 の 明 があったことが 現 在 の 北 大 に おける 自 然 史 研 究 の 伝 統 に 結 びついていると 言 ってよいだろう 現 在 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 には 札 幌 農 学 校 時 代 に 作 製 されたスナメリの 剥 製 標 本 1 体 が 所 蔵 されているが その 骨 格 標 本 は 付 随 していない もしかすると その 個 体 の 骨 格 標 本 がスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 へ 寄 贈 されたのかもし れない 今 後 北 大 のスナメリ 剥 製 とスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 の 骨 格 標 本 の 体 サイズや 外 部 形 態 の 比 較 分 析 なら びに DNA 分 析 の 実 施 などにより 個 体 の 同 一 性 を 調 査 することも 必 要 であろう 以 上 北 大 植 物 園 博 物 館 および 八 田 三 郎 とステン ベルクマンおよびスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 との 間 で 交 換 さ れた 動 物 標 本 について 紹 介 した ベルクマン 標 本 には その 他 にも 動 物 地 理 学 的 ならびに 博 物 学 的 に 貴 重 な 標 本 が 含 まれており それらについてさらに 調 査 分 析 を 継 続 して 行 くべきと 考 える 謝 辞 本 調 査 においてご 協 力 いただいたスウェーデン 自 然 史 博 物 館 の Göran Frisk 氏 と Ulf Carlberg 博 士 北 海 道 大 学 植 物 園 の 市 川 秀 雄 氏 高 谷 文 仁 氏 ロシア 科 学 アカデミー 動 物 学 研 究 所 の Alexei Abramov 博 士 に 深 く 感 謝 する 本 調 査 研 究 は 北 海 道 大 学 クラーク 記 念 財 団 研 究 助 成 および 日 本 学 術 振 興 会 二 国 間 事 業 共 同 研 究 (ともに 研 究 代 表 者 増 田 隆 一 )を 受 けて 行 われた 引 用 文 献 ベルクマン, S.( 本 仙 太 郎 訳 )(1935)カムチャツカ 探 検 記. 弘 学 社, 東 京. ベルクマン, S.( 加 納 一 郎 訳 )(1992) 千 島 紀 行. 朝 日 文 庫, 東 京. 八 田 三 郎 (1910) 動 物 の 分 布 上 北 海 道 の 位 置. 動 物 学 雑 誌 22: 八 田 三 郎 村 田 庄 次 郎 (1926) 北 海 道 産 鳥 類 目 録.
