9 Editor's Note This is the grace of Mother Durga that even not being in Tokyo as a regular resident, I am getting a chance to serve our Maa Durga on the occasion of this year s Durga Puja.. I knew it is tough for me in my busy travelling schedule to do a perfect job of editing Anjali like earlier years when Sushmita was in Tokyo, but I didn t want to miss the opportunity to serve all of you on the occasion of our Annual Durga puja event. So, when Syamalda and Gautamda hesitantly approached me, I grabbed the opportunity immediately. Thanks to all of you for giving me this opportunity again to serve you and Maa Durga. In advance I seek apology for some unintended mis-spell in names, ages, may be even gender.. Last year after partially returning to India, I could get a chance to participate in both Tokyo and Bangalore / Chennai Durga Puja. I can reconfirm to all Tokyo residents that you are not missing any excitement, enjoyment, devotion and socialization living so many thousands kilometer away from our homeland. In fact within short span of one and half days, Tokyo residents get more exposure to enjoy local talents and participate in that. I am truly missing participating in Drama, cultural program rehearsals at different BATJ member s houses and the delicious Bengali and Indian foods at the end of the rehearsal. To me these events prior to Durga Puja was more memorable, because it brought lot of us more close and we became true lifetime friends all because of our beloved Goddess Mother Durga!!! This is the seventeenth consecutive year of our Durga Puja celebration in Tokyo. Anjali the multilingual literary magazine is very much a part of this "Festival of Joy". On the occasion of publication of 11th edition of Anjali we pay our tribute to mother (Durga-maata) through "Anjali" and sincerely pray for peace and prosperity for the whole world. My best wishes to all of you for this year s Durga Puja. I am feeling extremely sorry of not being able to be physically present during this year s Durga Puja.. 10 Mountains are enjoyed from the distance- But seldom climbed! After H.E. Ambassador Hemant K. Singh and his wife Mrinalini Singh arrived in Tokyo in June they had one desire - to climb Mt. Fuji, and that they did within a few months. On Aug. 15 th 2006 at 7:30 p.m. they started on this challenging trek. An eager group of six, that included Mrs. Singh s mother, Mrs Shakuntala Dahiya, who was celebrating her 70 th Birthday that day set off on their trek that evening after sighting an unusual sight- a yellow butterfly fluttering in the dark, that surely seemed to be a sign of good luck. The challenge was there the unpredictable weather, the rocky terrain but nothing could halt the daunting spirit that led them to the peak next morning. While Mrs. Singh was relating her experience you could feel she was totally overwhelmed by the sanctity and the beauty of this revered mountain and she claims that her total rendition to this sacred symbol of Japan gave her the strength to persist. Incidentally Ambassador Singh is the first Indian Ambassador to climb Mt. Fuji. Mrs Dahiya could not make it to the top and had to give up at the eighth station, but she surely deserves the applause for what she did. 8
