4 Ⅲ. In recent years people have become more concerned about environmental problems. One way to deal with these problems is by recycling. Recycling one ton of newspaper, for example, saves seventeen trees and more than 26,000 liters of water. In addition, recycling often helps to save energy and reduce pollution. Various attempts are being made to encourage people to collect as much recyclable paper as possible. We know that people will gather recyclable paper more enthusiastically if they get money for doing it. To find more economical and effective ways to encourage people to recycle paper, an experiment was carried out by a group of researchers. They selected eighty families who were willing to take part in the experiment, and these were divided into four groups of twenty families. The experiment was conducted in two stages of six weeks each. In StageⅠ, the families were simply told to collect paper for recycling. The amount collected by each family was measured. In StageⅡ, the families continued to collect paper, but three of the groups were given some kind of encouragement. The families in Group A had their names mentioned in a local newspaper. Those in group B received weekly records of the weight of the recyclable paper they had collected. Both kinds of encouragement were given to the families in Group C. Group D, however, received no encouragement at all. The graph shows the average weekly quantities collected by each group during StagesⅠand Ⅱ. Group A collected a little less than Group D in StageⅠ, but slightly more than Group D in StageⅡ. Group B had an average well above the other three groups in StageⅠ, and also collected more paper than any other group in StageⅡ.Group C showed the most remarkable improvement between Stages Ⅰ and Ⅱ. 4 kg StageⅠ StageⅡ
5 問 1 The results for Group ( 1 A 2 B 3 C 4 D ) are shown by the pair of bars at the left end of the graph. 問 2 The average quantity of paper collected by Group B increased by ( ) kilograms. 問 3 The families in each group ( ). 1 agreed to participate in the twelve-week experiment 2 suggested better ways to encourage the collection of paper 3 were required to join the recycling project organized by a local newspaper 4 were paid according to the quantities of paper they collected 問 4 The main purpose of this experiment was to ( ). 1 examine how to promote recycling without using much money 2 find out what types of people are the most enthusiastic about recycling 3 show that paying money is not the best way to encourage recycling 4 study the amount of paper people can recycle per week 問 5 本 文 およびグラフの 内 容 とあっているものは( ) 1 Keeping weekly records had no effect on the amount of paper the families recycled. 2 Families who did not receive any encouragement stopped recycling paper. 3 Publishing their names encouraged people more than giving them weekly records. 4 Combining two different types of encouragement proved to be very effective. 4
6 Ⅳ. 次 の 英 文 を 読 み 以 下 の 問 いに 答 えなさい What is your image of India? Is it curry and turbans? India is actually a country of great diversity. It has many races of people, over 500 different languages, various cultures and the second largest population in the world, following China. It is estimated that the population of India will actually exceed that of China by the middle of the 21 st century. Overpopulation, an unfair landowner system and an illegal caste system are some of the major causes for the great gap that exists between the rich and the poor. In spite of a rich culture and an old history, millions of India s poor children are ( ア ) to work under severe and dangerous working conditions. Many of the child workers are denied food and are beaten up. According to official estimates, India has more than 12 million child workers. Of these, about 200,000 are estimated to be working as domestic servants and in teashops, restaurants, spas, hotels, resorts and other recreational centers the areas where they were banned from working several years ago. But unofficial figures, quoted by groups working with children, say the country has up to 20 million children working at homes and in food stalls. And the ban does not seem to have made any difference. However, India also has many wonderful and mysterious things that attract people. The Taj Mahal is one of these. This huge monument is made of white marble. The domed white building, with perfect symmetry, makes a nice contrast with the red sandstone of the surrounding buildings. In front of the building, there are a beautiful green garden and a pool that ( イ ) the white building. The monument was built in Agra in 1653 by orders from the emperor in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz-Mahal. The Taj Mahal takes its name from her. Nearly 20,000 workmen, skilled craftmen and architects from Asia and the Middle East spent 22 years building this tomb for her. Unfortunately, the emperor s excessive spending on luxurious buildings eventually ruined his empire. He was later imprisoned in the Agra Castle by his own son. He had to spend seven years there-each day gazing at his beloved wife s tomb on the other side of Yamuna River-until his death. Regrettably, (A)the Taj Mahal is now in danger of marble cancer. India s rapid industrialization has produced acid rain which turns white marble yellow. It is unfortunate that one of the great treasures of the world is paying the ( ウ ) for India s industrialization. However, the Taj Mahal is still a place of national pride and a symbol of India. We are now losing beautiful places and man-made monuments like Taj Mahal because of war, neglect or too many tourists. Only during the last century did people nearly start to take action to preserve these natural and man-made treasures. (B)What do you think we can do to preserve these precious treasures? 問 1 下 の1~5の 文 が 本 文 の 内 容 と 合 っていればTを 違 っていればFを 書 きなさい 1 In the middle of the 21 st century, India will have the largest population in the world. 2 There are few children in India who have domestic problems. 3 It is illegal for children in India to work at restaurants. 4 He could save a lot of money to make Taj Mahal. 5 People have long preserved great treasures of the world since they were built. 5
