5 This seminar focuses on the key concepts in second language learning and teaching. This seminar builds on the concepts introduced in the first seminar by looking at the acquisition of a second language and ways to teach language learners. The aim of the course is to present students with an overview of second language learning and teaching ideas. The classes will follow the course textbook and students will be expected to participate in the classes and to read the required chapter(s) before class. Week 1: Background to SLA and language teaching Week 2: Learning and teaching types of grammar Week 3: Learning and teaching vocabulary Week 4: Acquiring and teaching pronunciation Week 5: Acquiring and teaching a new writing system Week 6: Strategies for communicating and learning Week 7: Listening and reading processes Week 8: Individual differences in L2ers Week 9: Classroom interaction and CA Week 10: The L2 user and the native speaker Week 11: The goals of language teaching Week 12: General models of L2 learning Week 13: SLL and language teaching styles Week 14: Review Cook, V. (2008). Second Language Learning and Language Teaching. Hodder Education. Final grades will be based on attendance and completion of an assignment. Preperation for each class is necessary. Please read the textbook before class. This seminar focuses on the key concepts in bilingualism. This seminar builds on the concepts introduced in the first seminar by examining the bilingual. The aim of the course is to address a number of questions such as 1.) How do we acquire our first/second language? 2.) Are bilinguals different to monolinguals? If so, how are they different? 3.) How it is possible to have grammaticality judgments about code-switches. 4.) What are the effects of bilingualism on other domains of human cognition? Week 1: Why are people bilingual? / Describing bilinguals Week 2: The functions of languages / Language mode and language choice Week 3: Code-switching and borrowing / Speaking and writing monolingually Week 4: Having an accent in a language / Languages across a lifespan Week 5: Attitudes and feelings about bilingualism / Bilinguals who are also bicultural Week 6: Personality' thinking and dreaming, and emotions in bilinguals / Bilingual writers Week 7: Special bilinguals / In and out of bilingualism Week 8: Acquiring two languages / Linguistic aspects of childhood bilingualism Week 9: Family strategies and support Week 10: Effects of bilingualism on children Week 11: Education and bilingualism Week 12: Bilingualism in the world Week 13: Presentations Week 14: Review Grosjean, F.
