This Issue s Writer Name: Janette Fuchs From: Germany Now: Kobayashi City CIR Once-in-a-lifetime Encounters My heart jumps every time I hear a student happily call out Hey, Janette-Sensei! One year has passed since I moved to my small town in Myazaki Prefecture. During this time I have met a countless number of really incredible people. Let s take a peek at the daily events that make up the diary of my life. Bist du in Ordnung?
Recently I went into my office for the first time in three days and found that a friend had made an origami fox and put it with an envelope on my desk. This was a play on my last name, Fuchs, which actually means fox. On another occasion, a friend sent me an on a stormy night asking, Are you o.k.? The thunder really is loud tonight. On yet another evening when I was routinely checking my postbox I found a photo with a thank you message written on it. The photo had been taken at a house party I held a while back. I was also surprised when an elderly person made a hanabata decoration for me. Also, when I visited an izakaya on a cold evening all of the customers and I were given hand warmers. The next time I visited the restaurant, however, I wasn t given a hand warmer. When I asked for one I was told that the store wasn t giving them out because it was warm out. Maybe it was because I looked disappointed, but the next time I visited this store I was given a hand warmer despite it being relatively warm out. Every day I experience moments of kindness such as these.
My work as a CIR at the Social Education Division is fun in many different ways. When I applied to the JET Program I had no idea where I would end up working, but as I had studied abroad in Osaka eight years ago, I thought that it would be great if I could go back to Osaka again. When I was told I would be working in Kobayashi, however, I must have looked as if a big question mark was hanging over my head. Even after being told Kobayashi is in Miyazaki Prefecture I couldn t draw a clear image. When I heard Kyushu, however, I finally had an idea of where I was going. Even though I was going to a town that I didn t know anything about, I went to Kobayashi with the faith that it would provide fun experiences that could only be enjoyed in a small town. My duties as a CIR include visiting schools in Kobayashi City. I make visits to all of the elementary schools here. I have found my work becoming even more enjoyable as I learn the names and faces of each of the students. In my foreign language classes I enjoy teaching English and German (my native language) to students of all ages. I also work to incorporate German culture into my lessons. The other day I participated in a book reading for children at the town s Child Rearing and Support Center and was able to get acquainted with the children and mothers at the event. My first cooking class and seminar for the elderly are still very vivid and fond memories. Thanks to my current work as a CIR, I am able to meet people from age groups that I normally would not have opportunities to meet. Every age group brings something unique to international exchange. For instance, children are very enthusiastic and are similar to a blank sheet of paper. They also abound with curiosity, which makes them very easy to talk to. When interacting with people close to my age it is possible to share mutual experiences and beliefs, which makes it easier for us to open up to each other. When interacting with older generations conversations tend to focus on old Japanese traditions and history; they often teach me things that the younger generations don t know about. Thus, I m not only able to participate in international exchange, but I m also able to experience generational exchange that exceeds the boarders of Germany and Japan.
Kobayashi isn t a very big place, so it is easy to become a part of the community. When I go out people that I don t know often call out to me. At times like this people usually tell me You have a tall nose or It must be nice to have long legs or Blonde is a nice color on you. Maybe these people are just trying to make me happy by pointing out our differences. I would be happier, however, if instead of praising me they pointed out my mistakes. I m not a big fan of people thinking She is not Japanese, so it is only natural that she doesn t know what to do. I want to be treated like an equal. I am thankful that my friends at my current workplace don t give me special treatment. They interact with me in the same way that they do with anyone else. Sozusagen ein Level-up! Thanks to people like this I have been able to find a new me. Essentially, I leveled up! The current me is different than the me that used to live in Germany. I feel happier, and I have the urge to work harder. Also, when I make mistakes I take responsibility and apologize. I even feel like I can express myself better than when I was in Germany. The kindness and caring that the people of Kobayashi have shown me has really helped me to change as a person. I want to work to repay the kindness that the people of Kobayashi have shown me.
Last summer I returned to Germany for the first time in one year. At that time I was a little nervous about leaving Kobayashi. Of course, there was nothing to be afraid of as I was just going back to my home town. Still, for some reason I felt like I was just going to visit Germany for a while rather than like I was going home. For me, Kobayashi isn t just where I work. I even consider Kobayashi to be something more than my second home: It is my heimat (German for home). The scenery in Kobayashi is amazing of course, but this isn t what makes a place home. It is because of the warm and welcoming people here that I feel this way.
