3 Greetings Keizo Hamada, President, Setouchi Triennale Executive Committee / Governor of Kagawa Prefecture Fram Kitagawa, General Director, Setouchi Triennale Executive Committee The Setouchi Triennale is modern art festival where the displayed artworks act as guideposts for visitors to take in the breathtaking panorama of the Seto Inland Sea while discovering and engaging with the culture and lifestyles of the islands afloat on the sea. Being the second commencement of this endeavor, the festival has been divided into three sessions spring, summer, autumn so visitors may experience the seasons of the Seto Inland while enjoying the artworks. Furthermore, the area dedicated to the festival has been expanded. As one of the main events of the summer session, the Bangladesh Project consisted of the Takamatsu Port Art Factory: Bengal Island, which recreated the lively, thriving marketplace of Bangladesh s capital, Dhaka, and The Quintessence of Bangladesh Paintings where people witness the diversity of Bangladesh s modern art scene. Spanning a period of days, this project ended in a huge success, allowing for visitors from both inside and outside the country to experience the unique and brilliant art, textiles, crafts, dance, and song of Bangladesh. For this project, we had over professional craftsmen, performers, and artists stay in our prefecture to display their skills at the factories and perform traditional dance and song despite the consecutive days of record-breaking heat. Through these crafts and performances, the visitors were able to further their understanding of Bangladesh and its culture. My hope is that the bonds that were formed in pursuing this project will give forth to more friendly exchange between Bangladesh and Kagawa Prefecture. Lastly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who helped in the efforts to make the Bangladesh Project possible. Thank you very much. I have been taught that the modern lifestyle entails new, innovative ideas that make the details in life easier to deal with. The effects of that is more things to fill up your room, and hence a bigger house. While the list of foods has grown longer, it has become more difficult to eat authentic, local cuisine. To simply harvest, grill, broil, and enjoy the local seafood and vegetables served on carefully handcrafted bowls and plates is an art that has been lost amidst our mechanic search for efficiency, as we obsess over mass consumption, and get overwhelmed with the slightest bit of stimulation. Our five senses have withered, and we have lost the ability to feel that deeply moving joy that comes from within. The Setouchi Triennale, set on a sea that some might even call a narrow strait, was planned with the goal of establishing and reinforcing the ties between the earth, nature, and the people that inhabit Asia so as to celebrate the work and the hope of the present day people. It is the Restoration of the Sea. As the energy of the society is declining with the rapid aging of the population, cooperation and exchange has become key elements in opening new paths. Many people visited the prefecture, including people from all over Asia. Furthermore, we are also beginning to see art of the eco-friendly age. Within that movement, the people of the Seto Inland Sea as well as people from all over Japan were able to learn the fun of cooperating and the importance of handcrafting from witnessing the craftsmen and famous singers and musicians who travelled all the way from Bangladesh to exhibit their work. The days that Bengal Island manifested this summer at the Takamatsu Port was like a dream that provided visitors with an invaluable experience that will surely be talked about as good memories for many more years to come. 4 Opening Event Shiro Sadoshima, Ambassador, Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh On urday July,, Kagawa Prefecture welcomed the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Cultural Affairs, and the Advisor to the Prime Minister (International Affairs) from Bangladesh, and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to begin the Takamatsu Port Art Factory: Bengal Island, officially opening the summer season of the Setouchi Triennale. It began in great style with performances of traditional instruments and dances from Bangladesh during the event It all started with a conversation I had with Mr. Fram Kitagawa. Because I had met him before while I was working in Hong Kong, I decided to consult him. It was last February. This country, Bangladesh, is a country with an incredibly rich art culture. How can I share this with the Japanese population? Mr. Kitagawa s response was something out of the blue. Let s invite them to the Setouchi Triennale. Once the waterway by which Japanese culture was carried to Nara and the Kinki region, the Setouchi Inland Sea sets the stage for this modern art festival. Mr. Kitagawa s response developed into a plan to bring the entire breadth of lifestyle-inspired artworks from the land called Bengal to present a glimpse of the trouble-ridden country as a tremendous art nation. terasarete / Kōdai-jikōyō / kurenokoru Lit up / The Kōdai-ji Temple s tinted autumnal leaves / The sunset remains (even after nightfall) (Gallery Four Publications, 997, Kyoto Haiku, translated into Japanese by Koko Kato) The poetic sentiment and the aesthetic sense of the haiku composed by Hasnat Abdul Hai made me come to realize that the Bengali and the Japanese may have more similarities than we think. Why is that so? It occurred to me suddenly as I was viewing a picture in Kazuko Tomiyama s book, Japan: A Nation of Water and Greenery. It was captioned: Water, greenery, and soil are synonymous. That precisely describes the countryside of Bengal as well. The backdrop of water, greenery, and soil. Though we live quite a distance apart, these two populations hold similar sceneries close to their hearts of that they call home. We are the golden Bengal! The Bangladeshi national anthem, written by Tagore, the first person in Asia to win the Nobel Prize, sings highly of the ripe rice fields. The Bangladesh Project is a heartfelt gift to the Seto Inland Sea, which glows a beautiful madder red. As I hear the visitors speak of their experiences at the Triennale with big smiles on their faces, I am happy to know that the message from The Land of Rivers (aka. Bangladesh) has been delivered to and resonated with many, many hearts. First a symposium, and second a performance by musicians and dancers from Bangladesh. 6 Part Two Performance Shamim Ara Nipa The most famous female dancer in Bangladesh, ShamimAraNipa is active both domestically and internationally, having presented more than performances overseas. She is also an actress and has appeared in over drama series, primarily on Bangladeshi television. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Best Dancer Award. Shibli Mohammad A highly-distinguished dancer of traditional Indian dance, Shibli Mohammad has performed in over countries and is also a choreographer and an expert instructor of the Kathak dance form. He has received numerous awards, including the UNESCO Award for best Bangladeshi dancer. Md. Abul Hasan Bhuiyan Tapan Traditional Bangladeshi Dance During the late 9s, Bulbul Chowdhury (a modern dance pioneer) fused elements of local folk dances that had been passed down through generations in different parts of the country with elements of classical dance styles that were widespread on the Indian continent, creating a new form of traditional Bangladeshi dance. Chandana Roy (vocals) One of Bangladesh s most prominent folk singers Chandana Roy was strongly influenced by the th century songwriter and thinker Lalon. She sings moving renditions of lyrical songs expressing deep love for the mystical land of Bengal and recounting epic legends. She has released albums to date, and in 7 was awarded the prestigious City Cell Channel Music Award. She performs not only in Bangladesh but also in other countries such as India and Switzerland, where her concerts have been a great success. Dasharath Dash (traditional dhol drum) Nirmal Kumar Das (-stringed dotara) Md. Shahedul Islam (bamboo flute) Folk Song A performance of folk songs by the accomplished singer Chandana Roy accompanied by traditional instruments. Shammi Yesmin Jhinuk Irin Parvin Md. Najib Mahfuj Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan (sarod) South Asian Traditional Instrument Ensemble An ensemble featuring three string instruments (the sarod, sitar, and tanbur) and tabla drums. Born to a family of great musicians, Shahadat began studying music from his father at the age of seven, and he continued his studies under his uncle, Usad Bahadur Khan, the greatest sarod player in South Asia. In 97, at the age of sixteen, he performed a duet with his uncle at the Alluddin Music Festival, winning high praise. Furthermore, in 97, he received a State Award for his musical prowess. 7 Takamatsu Port Art Factory: Bengal Island More than artists from the Setouchi area, manufacturing artisans and performers from Bangladesh have gathered in Kagawa, and the Bengal Island came into the world at Takamatsu Port. The daily life and culture of Bangladesh are deeply connected with art. The market in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is one of the world s most enjoyable and exciting places. It combines not only a wide variety of food from the ocean, rivers and fields, but also jute parts for craft manufacturing, bamboo tools, musical instruments and boat factories. Amongst all of this there is also song and dance accompanied by live bands. All of these elements were brought together in the summer of at Takamatsu Port, transforming it into a bustling, vibrant market, just like that found in Dhaka. At Bengal Island there were also teams of traditional Chakma dancers, performing tribal dances such as the Charja Dance and ipuri Dance, alongside players of traditional Bangladeshi instruments such as the Basi, Ektara, Dotara and Dhol. They were accompanied by singers of folk songs performing famous piecescomposed by Tagore and Nazrul. These performers were divided into four different groups, balancing dance, music and singing performances, performing in a ten-day cycle. An international festival such as this, which featured more than artisans and performers had not been held before, and formed the backbone to connect the rich ocean and the world beyond. 8 Bangladesh Factory Instrument Studio A bustling Bangladeshi market scene came to life at Takamatsu Port with textiles, pottery, handcrafted shell and bamboo products, and musical instrument and boat-building workshops, all accompanied by song and dance. Shariful Islam The ektara and the dotara are among the most ancient of all the ethnic musical instruments passed down through the centuries, and they are essential to Bengal music. Tara means string, ek means one and do means two. The ektara is thus a one-stringed instrument while the dotara is anywhere from two to five-stringed. Ektara are generally made from a dried gourd with a bamboo neck, while dotara are made from wood with a hole in one side and cowhide. These instruments are used throughout Bangladesh. Dhol (Double-Headed Drum) Shoker Hari (Decorated Pottery) Artisans : Sree Susanto Kumar Pal, Sree Mritonjoy Kumar Pal Pottery Studio Artisan : Sibnath Sibu The dhol, a double-headed drum made of mango wood and cowhide, and it has been treasured in Bangladesh since long ago, as evidenced by its mention in folktales and legends. Commonly used at Hindu weddings and ceremonies, it is also an indispensable part of theater production and folk singing. Dhol players are known as dholi, and dhol were typically made by men from the commoner class. Painting on pottery is an ancient art in Bangladesh that dates back to Before the Common Era. Shoker Hari, decorated pottery, is used for celebrations and in Hindu ceremonies, and the pictures are symbolic representations of people s hopes and longings. Household Earthenware Artisan : Subal Chandra Pal 6 Basi (Bamboo Flute) Artisan : Kamol Sarker This flute is the most popular of all instruments and its use transcends the boundaries of community and class. A simple instrument made with simple methods, it comes in many sizes and types and is used in ensembles with other instruments as well as for solo performances. Abundant rains in the Bengal region ensure good quality clay and various types of pottery have been produced here since around BC. Potters, many of whom are named Pal or Kumar, are organized into potter s guilds. Pottery was once commonly used in the home and for ritual ceremonies, but with the introduction and spread of metal and plastic goods, it is now more often used for interior decorations. Textile Studio Terra Cotta Relief + Clay Figures Artisan : Sree Subodh Kumar Pal Terra cotta reliefs were commonly used on the external walls of mosques and temples in the Bengal region. Patterns were made by pressing a form or mold against a slab of clay or by carving the soft clay with a sharp pointed tool. Recently, reliefs have been used as ornaments to decorate the entranceways of apartment buildings, etc. 7 Jamdani Weaving Artisans : Anamul Haque, Jamal, Mohammad Abul Khair Woven of cotton or silk, Jamdani is the finest textile in Bangladesh. It emerged from the fusion of muslin, which was introduced by Muslims in the th century, with years of indigenous weaving tradition. In the past, gold thread was used to weave Jamdani textile for the royalty. The textile is woven on a bamboo loom which seats two weavers who produce complex patterns from memory alone. 9 9 Traditional Weaving Artisans : Nita Chakma, Ritan Chakma, Kanika Chakma, Donrum Mro Over million ethnic tribes live in the hill districts of southeastern Bangladesh. Each has its own distinctive textile designs and weaving methods to produce clothing, bags, and sheets. The Textile Studio will feature weaving by Chakma, the largest ethnic minority, and Mro weavers, who will make types of items, including wrap-around skirts and stoles. Sital Pati (Mats) Artisans : Arun Chandro Das, Horendro Kumar Das Woven from the stems of mutra plants, these mats feel very cool to the touch. The women of the Bengal region wove these by hand, and from there the craft spread to other areas. The mats are characterized by their ornamental designs with creeping vine motifs and geometric patterns. Nokshi Kantha (Embroidered Quilts) Artisans : Runa Begum, Kahinur Begum These quilts, which are made from layers of old saris and other cloth sewn together and embroidered with colorful patterns and designs, are one of the exemplary folk crafts of the Bengal region. At once practical and beautiful, they are an expression of female creativity and a source of precious income for the women in this region. Metal Craft Artisans : Mohammed Manik Sarker, Babul Akhter Chowdhary Metal working in Bangladesh dates back thousands of years. Today, metal craft artisans produce a wide range of items, including decorations for the home, household implements, and Hindu and Buddhist images. Of copper, tin, iron, gold and silver, copperware is the traditional craft of the Bengal region. Using short chisels and hammers, craftsmen produce decorative coconut leaf designs and Buddhist statues. Shell Work Artisan : Anup Nag Conch shell carving is one of the oldest household arts in Bangladesh.The shells are used to make such items as ankle and wrist bracelets, earrings, hair clips, necklaces, rings and buttons, and are often carved with designs of flowers, fish and birds. In Hindu custom, conch shell bracelets indicate that a woman is married. Wooden Figures Artisan : Ashutosh Sutradhar Figures of people, elephants, horses and other animals are carved from a very light and soft wood, then painted with bright, bold colors, such as red, blue, green, yellow and white. The majority of artisans are women. In rural villages and towns, special Bengal festival dances featuring these wooden figures are held. Gazir Pat (Scroll Painting) Jute Craft Artisans : Sukumar Pal, Lipi Akter, Samsunnahar Craft Studio Seven hundred rivers flow through Bangladesh, which has only two-fifths the land area of Japan. Jute is used to make fishing nets and hemp ropes and has been a mainstay of daily life for those who live with the flow of the great rivers. In the 9th century, jute production became a large-scale industry and by the early th century, the industry had grown so much that people called it the pride of Bengal. Recently, jute products have regained the spotlight for being environmentally friendly interior decorations. Artisan : Shambhu Acharya Paintings on cloth depict stories from the regional legends and myths and tales of the hero known as Gazir Pir. Mud mixed with milk is spread on the surface of the cloth and chalk or powdered conch shells is spread around the edges. Some scrolls are as long as 9 meters. The story scrolls are taken from one place to another and used for story-telling at markets and festivals. This form of entertainment is prized by the people of the Bengal region for both its artistic and its religious value. 6 Sponge Wood Craft Artisan : Gopendronath Chokroborti Sponge wood craft using Indian cork is a folk art with a long history. It is even mentioned in Hindu mythology. The headdresses and necklaces worn by the bride and groom in traditional Hindu weddings are sponge wood craft, and sponge wood is also used to make toys, dolls, and figures of birds and flowers. 10 7 Bamboo Craft Artisan : Mohammad Saha Alam A familiar, everyday material in Bangladesh, bamboo is used for a variety of purposes, including as building material, bird cages and baskets to hold fish and store food. Skilled artisan create bamboo crafts with beautiful patterns. Rickshaw Art (Painting) Artisans : Rafiqul Islam, Syed Ahmmed Hossain A form of pop art that began in the 9s, rickshaw painting employs contemporary motifs such as the Taj Mahal or famous movie stars, serving as an expression of the times. The tin plates on the back and the body are decorated all over, resulting in art in motion that is a pleasure to behold. Rattan Artisan : Jaynal Rattan grows readily in Bangladesh, and Bangladesh-made rattan furniture is popular worldwide. In addition to tables, chairs and other furniture, rattan work is also used as ornamentation for traditional houses, as well as to make baskets and bags. These are exported to Asia, Europe and other areas of the world. Banner Painting Artisan : Shites Kumar Sur Hand-painted movie billboards are a common sight at theaters in Bangladesh. The banners depict scenes from movies being shown and portraits of actors, directors and producers. They are considered important works of art that enhance the audience s enjoyment of the films. Truck and Bus Painting Artisan : Debu Achargg Trucks and buses in Bangladesh are often decorated with pictures of brightly colored flower patterns, movie heroes, verses of poetry, or religious symbols, providing a feast for the eyes. The designs are determined by the owners and therefore you will never find two vehicles that look the same. Workshop and Live Painting Studio 9 Nazir Hossain Bengal Tiger Artist Other Studios Artisan : Nazir Hossain Tigers on land, crocodiles in the rivers and snakes in the jungle are par for the course in the Bengal region, and they appear repeatedly as motifs in the artwork of Nazir Hossain. For the Bangladesh project, he is producing original tiger paintings on T-shirts and reusable shopping bags. A limited edition of reusable shopping bags with original tiger paintings will be sold on site. Mehndi (Henna) Art Artisan : Nilifar Begum In the traditional culture of Bangladesh and other countries in South Asia, the hands and feet, mainly of women, are tattooed with henna for festivals, religious events and weddings. The dye is a temporary flower-based dye used for skin ornamentation. The custom has since become popular in Western Europe, Arab countries and other parts of the world. Nouka (Boat) Artisans : Syed Wasam W. Doja, Md. Abdul Halim, Vojon Chandro Sutradhor Boats called nōka are the most widespread form of transportation in Bangladesh, even to this day. There are over types in existence and the skills for building them are passed down through generations of families of shipwrights. During the monsoon season, nōka races are popular in many areas. Nakshi Pitha (Rice Sweets) Artisan : Shumsunnahar Nakshi Pitha, a crispy donut made of rice flour, is not only delicious but also beautiful. Complex designs characteristic of Islam are made using a bamboo spatula. It is a very popular dish in Bangladesh. 6 []Bangladesh Factory []Bangladesh Factory 7

11 Rickshaw Rides Bangladesh rickshaws were originally brought over from Japan, and inherit their name rickshaw from the Japanese name, Jinrikisha. Rickshaws are currently used widely among local people, and more than a million now run in the streets of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. We organized a free Rickshaw Ride Experience during the festival, in which,7 people participated. Operating Dates :. August to. September, Reception : Bengal Island Information Route : Inside port Takamatsu area Fee : Free of charge Participants :,7 Nakshi Pitha Experience This was an experiential activity where people could make their own pitha (sweets made of powdered rice) with nakshi (decoration). This was run as a workshop with Ms. Shumsunnahart, a very popular woman considered by many to be the face of Bengal Island, and it was enjoyed by all ages. The event was supposed to start from August st (), however, we decided to operate only on urdays due to Ms. Shumsunnahar s health. Nakshi Pitha Experience Overview Dates : Every urday from. August to. The Nouka was made of jackfruit trees from Bangladesh. It was meters in length by.m in maximum breadth and. meters in height. It had a capacity of four and was named Bengal-go. At the launch ceremony there was also a Japanese style ceremony to pray for its safety in the ocean by the boat-builders of Setouchi Tenmasen at Takamatsu Port Art Factory on Bengal Island. Note: Nōka are small boats, which are used as one of the most important forms of public transportations on the rivers of Bangladesh, and there are over types in existence and the skills for building them are passed down through generations of families of shipwrights. 12 Performances Group For days between urday July, and day September, four different groups of performers came to Kagawa Prefecture from Bangladesh to perform in the show on the Bengal Island Stage. (Note: On urday July, and day July, and day September, they performed elsewhere.) There were four shows a day, and the first show was from :pm to :pm, the second from :pm to :pm, the third from :pm to 6:pm, and the fourth from 6:pm to 7:pm. Since the performances were held during periods of intense heat and initially there was no protective sunshade over the stage, we decided to hold only the latter two shows starting at : p.m. as per the performers request. Therefore, Group performed two shows per day. After the sunshade was installed during Group s run, we decided to cancel the first show and hold only the three latter shows starting at : p.m. in cases when the Takamatsu Regional Meteorological Observatory issued C+ heat advisories for the day during their a.m. weather announcements. Furthermore, if it rained, we had to cancel the show because the instruments were not waterproof. Traditional Bangladesh Dance During the late 9s, Bulbul Chowdhury (a modern dance pioneer) fused elements of local folk dances that had been passed down through generations in different parts of the country with elements of classical dance styles that were widespread on the Indian continent, creating a new form of traditional Bangladeshi dance. In the 9s, Gowhar Jamil, a legendary dancer, popularized this form of dance throughout the country. Currently, traditional dance in Bangladesh refers to the dances accompanied by patriotic hymns penned by famous Bengalis such as Nazrul and Tagore. Shamim Ara Nipa The most famous female dancer in Bangladesh, ShamimAraNipa is active both domestically and internationally, having presented more than performances overseas. She is also an actress and has appeared in over drama series, primarily on Bangladeshi television. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Best Dancer Award. Shibli Mohammad A highly-distinguished dancer of traditional Indian dance, Shibli Mohammad has performed in over countries and is also a choreographer and an expert instructor of the Kathak dance form. Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan (sarod) Born to a family of great musicians, Shahadat began studying music from his father at the age of seven, and he continued his studies under his uncle, Usad Bahadur Khan, the greatest sarod player in South Asia. In 97, at the age of sixteen, he performed a duet with his uncle at the Alluddin Music Festival, winning high praise. Furthermore, in 97, he received a State Award for his musical prowess. 13 Folk Song Accompanied by Traditional Instruments A performance of folk songs by the accomplished singer Chandana Roy accompanied by traditional instruments. Chandana Roy (vocals) One of Bangladesh s most prominent folk singers, Chandana Roy was strongly influenced by the th century songwriter and thinker Lalon. She sings moving renditions of lyrical songs expressing deep love for the mystical land of Bengal and recounting epic legends. She has released albums to date, and in 7 was awarded the prestigious City Cell Channel Music Award. She performs not only in Bangladesh but also in other countries such as India and Switzerland, where her concerts have been a great success. Dasharath Dash (traditional dhol drum) Nirmal Kumar Das (-stringed dotara) Md. Shahedul Islam (bamboo flute) Lalon Songs Accompanied by Traditional Instruments Fakir Lalon Shah was an th century Bengali songwriter, as well as a social reformer and philosopher who is known for his lyrical poetry and harmonious melodies. Lalon was a Baul (mystical, wandering minstrels), whose works have deeply influenced Bengali arts and culture, and he remains popular to this day as the greatest Baul of the th and 9th centuries. Pieces by Lalon are said to purify people s souls and its power makes people feel more connected with the nature around them. Farida Parveen (vocals) Farida Parveen became a nationally-renowned singer in 97 with her acclaimed performances of Oh, Padma River, Oh, Meghna River that sings of the rivers of Bangladesh as well as the Lalon song State the Truth, Go the Right Path. In 97, she received the Ekushey Padak for her support of anti-poverty campaigns. In 99, she was given the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Warda Rihab Warda Rihab has received awards in Bangladesh and India for her work, including performances of Tagore s dance dramas. She has performed in many countries, including the United States, Nepal, Germany, Bhutan, Kuwait, and Korea. She teaches Manipuri dance at the prestigious Chhayanaut Cultural Organization, training successive generations of dancers. Sanjoy Kumar Goswami Babrul Alam Chowdhury Someshwari Paromita Rhidi Manipuri Dance Manipuri dance, which originated with the Manipuri people in Sylhet in northeast Bangladesh, is one of the most graceful classical styles of dance. It has been passed down in its current form for over years. Colorful costumes coupled with undulating and lyrical movements are characteristic features. Today this dance form has spread throughout the country as an exemplary style of traditional Bangladeshi dance. Khairul Anam (vocals) One of the best known NazrulSangeet performers in Bangladesh, Khairul Anam performs regularly on Calcutta s Bengal music channel and on Bangladesh TV. He also performs frequently overseas as a member of Bangladesh s official cultural delegation and in concerts in India and San Jose, California. Shamir Hossain (vocals) A nationally renowned Baul singer, Shamir Hossain is also known as Shamir Baul in Bangladesh. After singing for a solid month at the grave of an Islamic saint in Dhaka, he was discovered by the Bangladesh National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. 15 Island Tour Island Art Factories We held an excursion to Megijima and Ogijima, the venue of Setouchi Triennale, for artisans and performers from Bangladesh to learn more about Kagawa prefecture. The excursions were held on six different occasions so that all of the artisans could take part when they had time off (July, August, August 6, August 9, August, August 6). Thirty-five artisans (four of the 9 visiting did not participate) and all visiting artists (Groups and only) joined the tour for a total number of 6 participants. We did not hold the tour for the performer Groups and because they did not wish to take the tour. The artisans and performers saw pieces in total. We were able to see the authentic handicraft making by Bangladesh artisans and Japanese artists at Takamatsu Port Art Factory: Bengal Island. Remarkably, the factories run by teams of artists, who manufactured boats, pottery, crafts, metal products, bamboo products, clothes and instruments, were very similar to the Bangladesh Factories. 16 Events During the Festival Visitor Trends Table Setouchi Tenmasen (Boat) Launching Ceremony A launching ceremony of the Setouchi Tenmasen, which was built publicly by Mr. Douglas Brooks, an American boat builder, and Mr. Koji Matano, was held at Takamatsu Port Art Factory in Bengal Island. The tenmasen was named Hoyumaru in tribute to the memories of the friendship between Bangladesh artisans and the Japanese artists and the fun time they had at the art factory at Takamatsu port, Bengal Island. Note: Tenmasen were originally used for carrying vessels or fishing boats in many areas of Seto Island Sea. The exhibition presented works including traditional paintings, modern pieces, and works rooted in the characteristic culture and land of Bangladesh. The many transitions in its political and social conditions have honed the sense of beauty and creative expression of its people. Rooted in the many handicrafts passed down in rural areas and expressive arts common to and widely spread in the Bengal region, art in Bangladesh flowered through people s efforts to respond with flexibility to the changing times In 97, the British Empire withdrew from India and the country was partitioned into India and Pakistan (the east province of which later became Bangladesh). Along with liberation from colonial rule, the pioneers of contemporary art in Bangladesh were also liberated from the classical and mythical materials which had played such an important role within the context of Bengal nationalism. Employing motifs and styles from ethnic art, these artists explored themes in nature and the concept of living in harmony with the land and expressed these subjects in bold brush strokes and bright colors. In 9, a year after the establishment of East Pakistan (later Bangladesh), the Dhaka Art Institute, the forerunner of the current Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, was founded, and it had a strong influence on art education in Bangladesh. In the 96s, the first graduates of the Institute moved towards even greater freedom of expression, producing abstract works rich in variation and diversity and explored a variety of expressive modes, such as wall murals, stained glass and design. After Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 97, Bengali traditions and culture were rediscovered, and artists experimented in creative work that linked tradition to contemporary times. In the 9s, the main trend in Bangladesh was semi-abstract art. With increasing opportunities for direct contact with art in the rest of the world and with the introduction of technology, Bangladeshi artists began to explore the limitless potential of creativity, diversifying their means of expression and generating artistic energy. This exhibition presented recent works by contemporary artists active from the 96s to the present, offering a taste of the great diversity and the bountiful nature of that distant land.
