50 ( ) < > Philosophy and History of Science (Special Lectures) Philosophy of Statistics and Its Implications [ The topic of this special lecture varies every year, picking up various topics related to the philosophical aspects of science. This year, we explore philosophy of statistics and its implication in various sciences. Statistics and statistical thinking are at the core of many scientific fields, but the philosophical basis behind it is rarely discussed. In this class, we look at several theories in philosophy of statistics (Bayesianism, Likelihoodism, and Error Statistics) along with several fields that actually use statistical method (statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, population genetics, social survey etc.). [ To understand philosophical way of looking at science. In particular, this year, to understand various theories in philosophy of statistics and their implications for various scientific fields. To be able to apply the philosophical theories discussed in the class for concrete cases. [ The lectures will be given both in Japanese and English. Tentative list of topics (spend one or two weeks for each topic) Part I: philosophy of statistics -philosophy of probability -Bayesianism -classical statistics and its rationale -likelihoodism -error statistics -Akaike information theory Part II Implications for various fields -statistical mechanics -quantum mechanics -population genetics -social survey ( )(2)

51 ( )(2) [ No background is required, but if you are not familiar with philosophy of science ingeneral, please read some introductory book by yourself. Okasha's introductory book ( is recommended. [ a midterm paper project and the final paper. The project and the final paper as a whole is evaluated numerically, where full mark is 100 and passing mark is above 60. The assessment is done from the viewpoint of (1) whether the paper reflects proper understanding of the theories discussed in the class and (2) whether the theories are properly applied to concrete cases. Responsiveness to the instructors comment to the paper project is also assessed. [ reading assignments will be distributed in the class. [ [ Students are expected to read the assigned reading before each class to be able to take part in the class discussion. KULASIS

99 ( ) < > Twentieth Century Studies (Special Lectures) HAYASHI,Brian [ The overall aim of this course is for students to development a foundational understanding for why the United States of America became the world s superpower in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It takes as its subject the economic, legal/constitutional, political, military, social, and cultural aspects of the history of the United States, focusing on a society that emerged from a Third World-like condition to becoming a global power on the world stage by [ For the spring semester, the focus is on providing student with an informational background into economic, legal/constitutional, military, and political aspects as to how and why the United States of America became a world power. Every year, I add new lecture materials and change the topics around so that you will hear about new aspects of what I consider to be a very exciting research field called US History. Included in these sets of lectures are some hot topics like war and intelligence. [ The fall semester focuses on the softer subjects of the demographic (especially immigration), cultural (gender, women s reform movements, leisure and entertainment), and social such as how the United States transformed itself into a nation with many subnations and why I believe it is erroneous to treat America as a single unified (and uniform) cultural entity. While the lectures are in English, lectures outlines, multimedia presentations, and other visual aids are part of this course to help you understand the contents. Lecture outlines are given out to each student so that one can follow the lecture. One of the outstanding characteristic of this course is to encourage students to participate verbally in the discussion. I usually begin any given lecture with a discussion first of the broader, comparative themes of the topic, and then move into the specific case of the United States and how it differs or parallels similar processes in other countries. Thus foreign students with knowledge of their respective country s history are particularly encouraged to take this course and are invited to speak up during class discussion. [ [ For Bungakubu undergraduates, your grade is based on one paper, about 4-10 pages in length (in Japanese or English), on the topic of your choice due at the end of the spring semester (we will do the same for the fall semester), an oral presentation ( Meeting of the Minds ), and weekly short written summaries of the readings (to be assigned for each week). For Bungakubu graduate students, you also must turn in one paper per semester, about 6-12 pages in length, on the topic of your choice, due at the end of the spring and fall semesters, respectively. In addition to class discussions, we will do a Meeting of the Minds oral presentation on an appropriate historical character assigned to you. For SoJin students, the course requirements and grading are the same as for the Bungakubu undergraduate students, except that you are on a one-semester basis. As for your Meeting of the Minds oral presentation, you will choose (or be assigned) ( )(2)
