4 Foreword As a center for the interdisciplinary study of the monotheistic religions, CISMOR has set the goal of studying the three monotheistic religions in their past and their present, with the emphasis on interrelations between these religions in their beliefs and writings as well as their historical connections and mutual infl uences. Within this framework we were fortunate to have the opportunity to convene the fi rst CISMOR conference on Jewish Studies in current Japanese academic research. Its participants included a number of distinguished colleagues from different academic institutions throughout Japan who specialize in Jewish studies and related fields. As will be seen from the presentations collected in this volume, research in Jewish studies starts historically with the beginning of Israelite monotheism, and continues up to current issues of the twentieth and twenty-fi rst centuries. The lectures by Taggar-Cohen and Echigoya, in the fi rst session, situate ancient Israelite community in the context of the larger ancient Near Eastern world. The second session presents Judaism starting from the Mishnaic period to the Middle Ages, pointing to contacts with Christian and, later, Muslim culture and communities as discussed fi rst in Ichikawa s and then in Teshima s lecture. Such relations between the monotheistic religions in the past may suggest possibilities for a future of co-existence between the three major monotheistic religions in the world today. Contemporary Jewish cultural and social developments occur mainly in the State of Israel and among Jewish communities in the United States. This came as a result of the extinction of most of Jewish life in Europe after World War II, as Nomura-Nakazawa discusses in the third session. However, Otsuka s lecture on the Sudanese Jewish community demonstrates that there are still Jewish communities not related to these large centers, and much can be learned from them regarding the development of Jewish life worldwide and its contacts with other Jewish and non-jewish communities. Printing the lectures included in this volume will enable our colleagues to share with us the experience of the CISMOR conference, including the illuminating comments by several participants and the discussions that followed the lectures. Our hope is to hold similar conferences in the coming years and invite many other scholars in related fi elds of study to join our discussions. The goal, as always, will be to reach a better understanding of the complicated relations between the monotheistic religions, and to show new avenues of possible dialogue between what seem to many to be the unbridgeable differences in the beliefs of different religious communities.
