Introduction Nicholas Charles Bochsa had a short time in Australia beore his death in Sydney in 1856 Hoever he is one o the imortant nineteenth-century musicians to have visited this country and thus should be included in this series Robert-Nicolas-Charles Bochsa (normally named as Nicholas Charles), har virtuoso, entrereneur, ublisher and comoser as born on 9 August 1789 in Montmdy in Lorraine, France he ton, close to the borders ith Belgium and Luxemburg as a garrison base, here his musician ather, Karl Bochsa as a oodind layer, stationed in a French regiment he elder Bochsa established a ine reutation or himsel in Paris as a ublisher and teacher Sent to study the har at the Paris Conservatoire, in 1813, Bochsa as aointed as a layer on that instrument to the Naoleonic Court, and to the Emress Marie-Louise He distinguished himsel as a virtuoso layer on the har, ossibly the inest layer in the nineteenth century, but also as a comoser o orks that extended the reertoire, bringing ne comosition techniques that took advantage o the ne edal systems invented by Sebastian Erard He as musically recocious, and his irst recorded oera, Le retour de rajan, ou Rome triomhante as staged in Lyons in 1805 hen he as aged sixteen As a comoser he rote several oera and oera-comiques, many o hich ere remiered in Paris, and he rote numerous orks or chamber instruments, including several sonatas or oodinds His outut o comosition or the har as very large and his orks are still art o the reertoire Bochsa ｯs imortance as a virtuoso erormer and comoser or the har has eclised his real talents as an orchestral comoser and as a riter or the theatre His music contains elements o the central-euroean style o comosition, a secure musical tradition that he inherited rom his Czech born ather As a erormer he as very ashionable in the late Naoleonic eriod in the Restoration eriod o Louis XVIII, here he as again aointed Harist to the Bourbon Court 1 nortunately he involved himsel in seculation and ublishing ventures that sa him come under a series o criminal charges in the French Courts, hich led to him leeing France or England in 1817 Restabilising a career in London he as a rominent eature in concert lie in that city, and a sought-ater teacher He as one o the early teachers and articiants o the Royal Academy o Music, but in 1827 as asked to leave that body hen his ersonal and inancial lie came under a cloud From 1826 to 1832 he resided over seven seasons at the Royal Italian Oera, here the ne orks o Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Giovanni Simone Mayr and Zingarelli ere erormed Bochsa also comosed ive ballets, our o hich ere staged at the King ｯs heatre in London!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 For Bochsa ｯs lie see Michel Faul Nicolas-Charles Bochsa harist, comositeur, escroc (Paris: Editions Delatour, France, 2003)

In 1839 he absconded ith the sorano Anna Bisho, the ie o the inluential English comoser, Sir Henry Bisho, and ironically the comoser o ｮHome Seet Home ｯ 2 here began a long series o oreign tours that took the air rom Scandinavia and Russia to Mexico and several years in the nited States, that inally ended in Sydney in 1855 Bochsa and Bisho had erormed over the nited States, at a time hen Caliornia as exeriencing the great gold rush o the eriod Caitalising on the Australian gold rush, both Bochsa and Bisho decided to sail rom San Francisco to Sydney, a voyage that laced a great strain on Bochsa ｯs health A man o great height and generous girth, he had had a rior history o heart roblems Engraving o Nicholas Charles Bochsa Artaria, Vienna, 1842!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 Anna Bisho ｯs long lie is recounted in Richard Davis Anna Bisho he Adventures o an Intreid Prima Donna (Sydney: Currency Press, 1997)
