F R Paul Woodford s Democracy and Music Education Makes a Stir : Liberalism, Postmodernism, and Feminism in the Philosophy of Music Education SUGITA Masao This study highlights the content and significance of Paul G. Woodford s music education philosophy in Democracy and Music Education : Liberalism, Ethics, and the Politics of Practice 2005, along with reviews of the book, Woodford s replies to them, and his recent articles. By examining his philosophy, I intend to gather suggestions for a democratic music education philosophy that fits within the social and cultural context of Japan. Democracy and Music Education ignited intense arguments over the philosophy of music education. To illustrate the sensation it caused, I examine an issue of the Mayday Group s Action, Criticism and Theory for Music Education Vol. 7, Issue 1, 2008, which was dedicated to reviews of the book. After briefly outlining the book, I analyze an introduction by David Lines ; reviews by Patrick Schmidt, Kirsten Locke, and Michael Peters ; an article by Elizabeth Gould on democracy in music education ; and Woodford s responses to these critics, and his recent articles. Through comparison and analysis, I consider the characteristics and significance of Woodford s music education philosophy, which is based on liberalism. I also pose some questions regarding Woodford s definition of postmodernism, his criticism of Henry Giroux, and his views of non - Western music culture.
