11 First, I would like to say to every one who had contact with me that thank you for what you have done for me in many scenes. From April 3 to July 3, 2005, I went to the U.K. to study English! That was my first experience to go to a foreign country. Before I went to the U. K., I had had two feelings. One was anxiety ; the other was expectation. Now that I think back, perhaps it was natural to have such complex, uncomfortable feelings because a lot of things could be the matter of concern : the English life style, English food, English sense of value, English culture, and especially the English language. The very first day I arrived, it was terrible. I could not speak English at all. Now that I know how terrible my level of English was then, I can t believe why I decided to go totheu.k.atall.i couldn t tell anybody what I wanted. Can you imagine that? It is unlikely that we experience that in Japan, isn t it? Eventually, what really saved me from starving was my body language rather than English. However, I finally realized that my English level was not the critical problem. The most essential thing is to show one s spontaneous enthusiasm. I would like to tell anyone who wishes to speak English about that. If you try to speak English to a foreigner for the first time or if you don t have confidence of speaking in English, you might have to show more guts! Of course I also had the same sentiment. However one step of my courage took me to the New World which I had never known. Fortunately, my classmates, host family, teachers, staff at my workplace and all the people whom I could call as friends changed me. They taught me in one way or the other how to contact with a person or how to speak in front of the big audience. I really loved such sunny contacts, which had been unknown to me when I was in Japan. I even think it is necessary if one tries to live with people from other countries comfortably. When my class in Manchester started, I made up my mind to be positive. It is important for anyone starting a new life to be positive. So during the pause between lectures and lunch break, I did my best to talk with friends and teachers. All the friends and the teachers were friendly and funny. From such conversations, I learned a lot : particularly about religion. Japanese are not very religious. But some countries put special emphasis on religion, which is really interesting. Some cannot eat pork, cannot drink alcoholic drinks, must pray 3 times a day, must go to the temple to pray every Friday and so on. I learned about them in paper at school. Likewise, I could broaden my mind quite a bit throughout my stay in England. Now I m interested in many countries, their cultures, and their languages because my Manchester experience gave me things that I can t count with my ten fingers. What changed me was my decision there to make a small step forward. I hope you will get an equivalent chance to make one small, yet brave step forward. 10
