8 特 別 寄 稿 :2014 国 際 基 督 教 大 学 ジェンダー 研 究 センター 開 設 10 周 年 シンポジウム 7 境 界 と 共 生 を 問 い 直 す:ナショナリティ 身 体 ジェンダー セクシュアリティ Invited papers : 2014 CGS 10th Anniversary Symposium Redefining Boundaries and Conviviality: Nationality, Body, Gender and Sexuality Special Contribution Column A Special Contribution Column was added to this journal in 2013, the year that celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Center for Gender Studies (CGS). The column receives contributions on easily overlooked issues, challenging topics, and other critical issues from leading scholars. Redefining Boundaries and Conviviality The following four papers are based on the writers presentations in the symposium Redefining Boundaries and Conviviality: Nationality, Body, Gender and Sexuality held on November 23, 2014, hosted by CGS. Each paper analyses, from the perspectives of gender and sexuality studies, how artificially made boundaries break up person-to-person, person-to-society relationship today. Natsuno Kikuchi and Yeonghae Jung discuss the conspiracy between racism and sexism exemplified by comfort women issues or hate speech directed to Korean residents in Japan. The writers explore power structure where the ethnic majority naturalizes their rule over sexuality of the minority. Tomoka Toraiwa, Kyoko Tanaka and Kana Takamatsu on the other hand, problematize the marginalization of the sexuality and body of international students in Japan. International students are often the objects of goodwill of host countries while placed lower or marginal in host countries, due to the power relationship between their own countries and host countries. Written based on the writers long-term, often personal commitment to the issues, the four papers urge us to critique and overcome such naturalized boundaries as nations, ethnicity, race and gender. 121 120 Parables of a Cupcake: the Deployment of Affect, the National Body and Homonationalism in the Aftermath of the London Riots Mayu IIDA This paper examines how the notions of affect, the national body and homonationalism have been deployed and articulated in the aftermath of the London Riots that took place in August, With reference to Tom Whyman s article Beware of cupcake fascism published on The Guardian in 2014, which illustrates oppositional responses to the riots, I will investigate the way the cultural tropes of cake and cupcake could be associated with emerging debates within feminist and queer politics. As the incidents have brought out several structural deficiencies in terms of race, class and poverty, it is significant to pay careful attention to the ongoing construction of the bodies of others in contrast with the government s comprehensive recovery scheme entangled with the declaration of the national ideal as well as the re / production of privileged citizens. It must be stressed that the government insisted on mending broken society with a specific focus on conservative values of family and ideal Britishness regardless of rioters varying backgrounds and causes of social oppression. Whyman s article does not only offer a critical insight into differential orientations towards what is deemed a national crisis, it also reveals the rhetorical affirmation of middleclass values against possibilities of social change by claiming emotional others as the objects of clean-up, who disturb the existent boundaries of the national body. Reflecting upon Sara Ahmed s influential argument of the stickiness between bodies and emotions, I will first attempt to unfold the complicated process of incorporation into the body of the nation, which is followed by an in-depth analysis of legitimate and alternative historicity in relation to good-life-fantasies and Lauren Berlant s concept of cruel optimism that the nation promises as a normative condition of everyday lives, which is, however, suspended for the maintenance of the

The arbitrary appropriation of the imagined past for a better future then secures the national ideal, while it inevitably bears a historical burden such as the privilege of whiteness and the liberal-bourgeois subjecthood. In addition, the metaphors attached to the objects of consumption will further be discussed with regard to homonationalism defined by Jasbir K. Puar, in that the rioters bodies marked as others are meticulously expelled from neoliberal political economy behind the logic of social progress. The riots bring to the fore the intersection of affective politics, queer alternative historiography and the rise of homonationalism against universalising and idealising narratives deployed by the nation in the face of a crisis, whose underlying imperative may sound surprisingly familiar. 148 研 究 論 文 : 留 め 置 かれる 彼 女 たちの 身 体 147 ー レシタティフ における グロテスク のイメジャリと 障 碍 をもつ 身 体 Research paper : Restrained Female Bodies: The Relationship between the Imagery of Grotesque and the Disabled Body in Recitatif Restrained Female Bodies: The Relationship between the Imagery of Grotesque and the Disabled Body in Recitatif Mai IGARASHI Recitatif (1983) is the only short fiction which has been written by Toni Morrison. This story consists of the encounters and conversations every few years of two women, Twyla and Roberta, who first met in an orphanage when they were 8 years old. In addition to former research that had been discussed about racial matters, recently some studies have been engaged in analyzing a representation of disabled bodies. The theme of disability (or bodily impairment) in Toni Morrison s works have been deliberated upon her novels. Many of these investigations have been focused on the disabled body as a kind of grotesque thing. However, in Recitatif, the imagery of grotesqueness is given not to just the orphanage s kitchen woman, Maggie, who is supposed to physically and mentally disabled, but also the other characters. These are older girls ( big girls ) in the orphanage, who are called gar girls by Twyla and Roberta. The nickname of gar girls comes from gargoyle, a character that has a grotesque figure. It is supposed that they have an able body. Consequently, there is a more complicated relationship than the premise that connects grotesqueness and the disabled body as a straight one. Therefore, in this paper, I would like to reconsider the relationship between grotesqueness and disabled body. Maggie and big girls / gar girls appear in Twyla and Roberta s reminiscences of the orphanage which they talk about in almost every encounter. Twyla and Roberta firstly call older girls as big girls, and in a certain point of this talk, they change it to gar girls. In this essay, I want to focus on this change of nicknames in order to reexamine the relationship. Focusing on it means to analyze the process of giving grotesqueness to not grotesque one at the beginning of this story. First, what happens in this change will
149 148 be addressed. We will find the meaning of the imagery of grotesque as a sense of evil and sexual deviance in this story. Then, the meaning of this change will be explained. We will know the situation that Twyla and Roberta overcome a kind of threat by they became older than big girls. Thirdly, what Twyla and Roberta are doing in this change, especially how they are related to Maggie, will be examined. It will be show that comprehending this change is crucial for Twyla and Roberta to protect themselves against Maggie as a kind of danger. As a consequence, we will appreciate the failure of Twyla and Roberta s attempt to guard themselves from the danger of Maggie. Finally, through investigating the meaning of this failure, the relationship between the grotesqueness and the disabled body will be elucidated. To conclude, it will find the fact that the possibility of the disabled body differs from the imagery of the grotesque in Recitatif.
