G: It says the Thunder Gate in Chinese character. The cross bar on the top shows heaven, the four shorter cross bars shows raindrops, and the four squares shows rice fields. V: Are there any relations with thunders? G: Thunders bring blessed rain to rice fields. That makes us Asians deify thunder as a deity. V: That s sense! What is the character down there, then? G: That is a gate. Doesn t it look like a double gate? V: That s interesting! So you express Thunder gate this way. G: Exactly. Look at the left side of the gate. That is the deity of thunder. He carries seven drums on his back to make big noise when he dubs them. And the right one is the deity of wind. V: Deity of wind? G: Yes. When a typhoon makes landfall, it brings us both disaster and rain. The rain cuts both ways; the disaster and the harvest. That s why we have worshipped the nature itself as deities. 1

Incidentally, the ash was a gift from Sri Lanka, the Buddhist Nation in V: I see. What are they buying, by the way? G: They offer some money to get talismans or amulets. They say two fishermen netted a small statue of kannon in Sumida River flowing near here and enshrined it. V: Can we see it? G: Actually it is not shown publicly because it is supposed to be too sacred. Even though, about visitors come to pray for each day on average. V: What a big offering box! We start here old fashioned town of Asakusa, passing under 12 bridges down to the futuristic town of Odaiba. V: Sounds exciting! G: It s about time to start. We have been seeing Tokyo Skytree there, which boasts the tallest tower in the world. V: How tall is it? G: It is 634m (2080 feet) tall, and you can even see Mt. Fuji from the glass-walled observation deck. V: I heard Japan has earthquakes very often. Are there any secrets of building a tower which is more than twice as tall as Eiffel Tower? G: Yes. The secret is not in its stiff structure, but in soft one. The tower itself shakes along with the earthquake. But on the other hand, it is well centered. V: I see. 11 第 2 回 皇 居 や 明 治 神 宮 を 案 内 しよう! 名 所 の 概 説 説 明 トレーニング 1 楠 正 成 像 と 南 北 朝 時 代 V:This is the Imperial Palace Plaza, isn t it? Who is that samurai wearing an armor and a helmet and galloping like Napoleon? G: It is Kusunoki Masashige, a samurai lived in 14 th century. He had been the icon of both loyal samurai and patriotic pride. V: Why? G: In 14 th century, Emperor Godaigo stood up to restore the Imperial rule. Then Msashige from Osaka and Ashikaga Takauji from Kanto supported him. V: Tell me more. G: Takauji kicked the Emperor out of the capital of Kyoto and let another prince become a new Emperor to reestablish a new samurai regime. V: But he was just like a puppet on the strings, wasn t he? G: Yes. Even though, Takauji became a shogun to start a new government. V: What did Emperor Godaigo do, then? G: He opened the Southern Dynasty as an exiled regime in the middle of Yoshino Village, Nara Prefecture. V: Did Masashige support him? G: Yes. He was one of the last remaining supporters though it had been an upheaval situation when everyone was for themselves. That s why he had been the icon of loyal and patriotism. 11

13 2 二 重 橋 と 江 戸 城 (ダイアローグ) G: Today s Imperial Palace covers the central part of Edo castle completed in 17 th century. But people don t take it as a castle. V: Why is that? G: First, people take it as a Palace of His Majesty first and a castle second. V: Have Emperors been in Tokyo for long time? G: No. Just after 19 th century. Though the Imperial line has been continued unbroken for many years, it has reigned but hasn t ruled for more than 1000 years. V: You mean they have kept a low profile and kept their noses out of politics, haven t they? G: Exactly. Back to the business, the second reason is because it s too large. The size of the Imperial Palace is about 2.3 km2 or 0.9sq ml, It takes good 1 hour just making one circuit around inner gorge. V: What is the third one, then? G: It has lost its main tower. Though the word castle reminds us of its main tower and Edo castle used to have 60m or 200 feet tall tower, but it has lost it because of the fire in V: Let me wrap them up. People don t take it as a castle because His Majesty lives there, second because it s too large, and third because it has lost its iconic main tower that defines castles. 13

Asian countries like China or India had only two choices; signing up the unfair treaty with Western nations to avoid the war, or having a war with them only to be colonized. G: Right. It was a choice of lesser evil. But the extremists who were going on an anti-foreign tide just couldn t take it. V: What did they do? G: They assassinated Ii to correct their poor handle of the shogun s governments diplomacy and turn it around. V: Wasn t that a terrorism? G: That s debatable and depends on how you look at it. This gate is called torii or outer gate of the shrine to draw a line between sanctuary and secular world. V: So we are now in the sanctuary now. What are those boxes for? G: They are sake barrels donated by breweries. It is a great honor for sake breweries to donate their sake or wine here, and it also works as a good advertisement. V: Do Shinto deities like to drink sake? G: Yes. People used to believe rice itself is something spiritual. And when the spirits of rice enter into our body, it makes us get high. V: Christian God is supposed to be the God of almighty, but Shinto deities sounds like very different. G: Yes they express their feelings just like you and me. Some of them can t stop drinking, some others even chase girls. V: It is very interesting because they are just like us. G: Right. Maybe we can see something more interesting after entering that inner gate V: Oh, I m excited. 17

G: It was designed by Katayama Tohkuma, a Japanese architect in the end of 19 th century. That was an era Japan was trying to shed the old skin of samurais nation to become a modernized nation. V: Really! I heard it was also an era Japan tried to get westernized. G: Yes. We changed even food, clothing and shelter as a national policy. Then, the government invited Josiah Conder, a British architect. Tohkuma was one of his student. V: Still, it is almost a perfect Western architecture. G: Yes. This is a masterpiece of architecture which represents the era of dashing toward Westernization or modernization After hundreds of tries and errors; they had built such a perfect one. V: By the way, the hall in the center looks unique and Oriental. G: The black roof-tiles on the top of ferroconcrete building, covered with Persian Arabesque decorations. G: Horyuji is a temple which Prince Shotoku built in Nara in 6 th century. It is also known for its important Buddhist statues. However, many of them are reserved and exhibited here. V: You mean we can see architectures in Nara and statues here? G: Exactly. You can see the gilt-bronze statues of Buddha brought from Korea in 6-7century displayed in semi-darkness. You would feel as if you are in the journey back in time when you see them. V: I see. What are unique points to these Buddhism statues here, by the way? G: Most of them are beaming so called archaic smile which is often seen in Silk roads or Northern Wei Dynasty. V: How global! G: Also most Buddhist statues in Japan are standing or sitting in lotus position. However, we can see half-lotus style which was often seen in Baekje in South-western Korea in the same period. V: Sounds like they are more like the integration of Asian art rather than Japanese one. The islet with Benten-doh shrine also modeled after Chikubu island of Lake Biwa. V: What a gaudy shrine! What kind of deity is Benten? G: It is a unit of deities from Buddhism, Taoism and Shintoism. It integrates seven deities of different religions, countries, and roles. V: I see.
