57 Perhaps the rotary c1ub international exchange program between New Jersey and Shikoku can be symbolized by Shikoku's 88 temples. Why fly Ia hours when cl-oser vacation spots are in Florida or the Caribbean? The answer is that the journey is not only for fun and refaxation, but also for spiritual growth and for taking our own small steps for world peace. My first impressions of,fapan were how modern the country is with advanced cel-i phones, a squeaky clean airport, and even buttons on the toilets. At the same time, visiting ancient temples, traditional gardens, and attending a tea ceremony taught me that, fapan has not lost her ancient heritage in the midst of technological advancement. Attending a tea ceremony was one of my favorite moments. Maybe because the daughter of my first host family was 24 and pretty. I watched as she performed the intricate, beautiful motions of the ceremony with her sensei. I had the pleasure of studying the philosophy of tea in my Zen Buddhism class in college taught by a.tapanese professor. Ichigo Ichie, or this moment, but once in a lifetime. I might extend this philosophy to the rotary club program. These past 3 weeks but once in a lifetime. The rotary cl-ub host families have been extremely generous. f have heard in America that the, japanese work very hard. Yet, even in the middle of the week, host mothers and fathers have taken the time to make our trip very enjoyable. We are very graceful. Some of us may have joked that we get the better end of the exchange deal-, with 3 weeks in beautiful Shikoku and kind hosts. Actually, 4 weeks ago I wasn't sure, but now I have decided to stay in.fapan's Fukui prefecture, as an assistant high school English teacher for 1 year. I hope to further study, japanese, make friends, study judo and maybe also zazen meditation at Eiheiji temple. I will probably return to America afterwards for graduate schoof or medical school. I hope the.tapanese students are excited to go to America. We may tend to take for granted the things around us. When we go back home, ildy we have learned the beauty of another culture as well as see our own again for the first time. I wish the Japanese students a great trip in America.
