KEIO ACADEMY OF NEW YORK OVERVIEW Keio Academy of New York is a private co-educational, independent secondary school which is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and registered by the New York State Education Department. Keio Academy of New York is authorized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan as an overseas educational institution. It is the only overseas operation affiliated with Keio University. Keio Academy of New York 25th Anniversary: What Comes Next On October 23rd, 1990, Keio Academy of New York was established in Purchase, NY as the only Keioaffiliated school outside of Japan. Since then, we have implemented an unparalleled bilingual and bicultural curriculum where students have opportunities to experience many different cultures so that they may grow to be capable of becoming global citizens. In 2015, the Academy will be welcoming its 25th anniversary. I would like to humbly express my gratitude for both your material and moral support. The 25th Anniversary Projects were initiated in April 2014 with the aim to raise students who have both great will and humanity by designing a curriculum of even higher quality and creating a fitting educational environment so that it may act also as an international base for research for Keio University. These projects have been carried out only with the support and cooperation of many people. Though we will from now on forge a path toward a new history, I am confident that the Academy will continue to play an increasingly valuable role in this internationalized society. We will teach our students with resoluteness so that, with the principles of dokuritsu jison (moral independence and self-esteem) at their core, they may gain and then effectively use a strength and perspicacity that surpasses time. I hope to use this anniversary as an opportunity to return to our roots and then press forward while we further improve upon our bilingual and bicultural curriculum. Thank you again for your continued understanding and support. Fumihiko Kono Headmaster (as of July 1st, 2015) 03

Depending on curriculum needs, classes are taught in English, Japanese, or both languages. Teachers encourage students to cultivate independent thinking with a broader, flexible perspective while respecting diversity. In this way, students learn to deepen their insights and how to express themselves. Bilingual and Bicultural Education Acquisition of Language Skills and Establishment of Identity There is a Japanese proverb saying, Fall seven times, stand up eight. Before entering Keio Academy of New York, I did not know what this meant, but from the 3 years I spent here, I was able to find out the meaning behind it. ~ Graduation Speech at the 23rd Graduation Ceremony ~ Providing a bilingual and bicultural education was one of the fundamental reasons for establishing the Academy. To strengthen students linguistic abilities, the Academy provides ESL or Nihongo classes based on each individual s specific needs. The English Department has also established teacher-monitored study halls dedicated to helping ESL students with other subjects that are taught in English such as social studies and science. Students who were educated outside of Japan are taught Japanese, Kokugo, Japanese culture, and Japanese history intensively in preparation for their continued studies at Keio University. This unique curriculum strengthens students command of both the English and Japanese language and maximizes their exposure to both cultures. The Academy encourages communication through discussion, debate, and group projects in the classroom for all subjects. This focus on communication is placed not only on communication between teachers and students, but also between the students themselves in both English and Japanese. Students with a stronger grasp of the English or Japanese language are naturally inclined to support other students with weaker language ability. 12 Academic Life

13 To further assist with the acquisition of language skills, the Academy supports students in obtaining qualifications such as the TOEFL, EIKEN test, Japanese Kanji Aptitude Test, and Practical Mathematics Proficiency Test.
