9 Introduction 1.1 Introduction This dictionary aims to provide a concise reference tuned for all the kanji characters and vocabulary which appear in the pre-2010 Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) level 2 examination. Please see for the latest information and versions or to submit feedback. The JLPT Level 2 kanji characters and vocabulary specifications are basic disjoint lists. This dictionary has unified this information into a single reference which contains 1000 characters and approximately 5000 examples. It also has extra information including stroke order diagrams and comprehensive readings and meanings. Within the specification are compounds that contain out of level characters, and special consideration has been paid to these. Any compound that contains a kanji character that is not a dictionary entry will have it s reading indicated with a furigana annotation. The construction from the input list to the final dictionary is performed by a set of programs that are designed to allow printed Kanji dictionaries to be rapidly created. 1.2 Page Organisation The dictionary is ordered according to the kana syllabary, the pages of the main dictionary are arranged in a two column format. On each page the upper outside edge has an indicator showing the first and last indexing reading on that page. The lower right edge indicates the ID range of contained character. 1.3 Indices Stroke Index This indexes characters in ascending stroke order Radical Index This indexes characters according to radical, the radicals are sorted into ascending stroke order Reading Index The reading index is generated by taking each example entry and aligning the kanji and kana writing. From this alignment the reading and type each character emits is identified. The index ix

Entry Identifier: Each entry has a unique numerical identifier which has a value between 1 and 1000 and is used for cross-referencing. 4. On Pronunciation: The sino-japanese reading (on-yomi) written in katakana. 5. Kun Pronunciation: The native Japanese reading (kun-yomi) written in hiragana. 6. Meaning: The translated meaning in English. 7. Information Fields: The following information is given for each character entry. (a) The radical. (b) The year the character is learnt in the Japanese school system. (c) The frequency of usage. (d) The stroke count. 8. Usage Examples: For each character a set of examples is generated by finding every JLPT level 2 vocabulary entry in which the character occurs. The examples are placed in order of the reading type the character generates. Firstly the sino-japanese reading (on-yomi), secondly the native Japanese reading (kun-yomi) and finally irregular readings such as gikun readings. 9. Furigana Annotation: This is added to kanji characters which occur in compounds but do not have their own dedicated entry within the dictionary. x
