7 ROMAJI TRANSCRIPTION WORKSHEET Please use the blanks to write these romaji sentences in their hiragana form. Read each sentence aloud, at least five times each, attempting to improve your speed with each reading. Go at YOUR own pace. 1. Kyou wa atarashii kutsu wo kaimashita. Translation: I bought new shoes today. 2. Shougakko de, mainichi kyoushitsu ni kyuushoku wo tabemasu. Translation: At the elementary school, we eat school lunch in the classroom everyday. 3. Sumimasen, onamae wa nan desu ka? Translation: Excuse me, what s your name? 4. Ashi wo kowarishita! Aaaa! Itai! Translation: My leg is broken! Ahhh! It hurts! 5. Zombie wa otokonohito no kao wo yukkuri tabemashita. Translation: The zombie slowly ate the man s face.

Translation: How much is the Playstation 9? 10,000 yen? That s all? It s cheap isn t it? 8. Eiga wa dou deshita ka? Translation: How was the movie? 9. Doko ni kara kimashita? Kyouto kara kimashita. Translation: Where are you from? I m from Kyoto. 10. Konshumatsu wa nani wo shite imasu ka? Translation: What are you doing this weekend?

9 HIRAGANA TRANSCRIPTION WORKSHEET Please change the following ten hiragana sentences into their romaji form Read each sentence aloud, at least five times each, attempting to improve your speed with each reading. Go at YOUR own pace Translation: Mom! What s for dinner? Please make your own dinner. 2. Translation: The dog ate the man s leg. 3. Translation: Excuse me, where is the bank? 4. Translation: My name is Shinji. It s nice to meet you Translation: I ate a lot of crayons yesterday. Please go to the hospital! 1. I don t want you to worry about meanings, which is why I added translations. Please just practice transcribing the characters for now. 2 This is the word for crayon in Japanese, which is normally spelled using katakana characters. But for today, we ll use hiragana for the sake of practice.

10 6. Translation: What kind of car do you have? I don t have a car, I have a bicycle. 7. Translation: Which do you like between sushi, ramen, and shabu shabu? 8. Translation: If I were rich, I d buy a golden toilet. 9. Translation: There is a squirrel in the garden. We re having squirrel stew for dinner Translation: Mickey and Goofy got into a fight. Goofy died. 3 I highlighted Mickey and Goofy s names in English because you would normally write them in katakana. However, for the sake of practice, let s use hiragana to write them today.
