2 AIKIDO DOJO ( 合気道道場 ) Overall, Aikido was a very special experience that I can t easily have elsewhere. Training with a white belt I thought this Aikido experience would be easy because I already had experience in the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. But as soon as I started my first intro class, I realized I was wrong. Aikido was much harder than I expected at first, but as I got used to it, I started to feel confident and really enjoyed the Aikido dodging moves. Although Aikido and Tae Kwon Do are both martial arts, I noticed one major difference: Tae Kwon Do focuses on blocking attacks with arm technique, while Aikido focuses on dodging attacks with flexibility. One of the things I liked about Aikido was the nonverbal communication. Training with a white belt It was nice since I am not really a good communicator, and I am shy. I also liked the feeling after Aikido. It made me sweat, but I felt like I did a good work out. Overall, Aikido was a very special experience that I can t easily have elsewhere. L.A. Daiku (L.A. 第九を歌う会 ) L.A.Daiku is a Los Angeles based chorus group formed in September "Daiku" means "Ninth" in Japanese and usually refers to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The mission of L.A.Daiku is to be open to all people who enjoy singing not only the Ninth Symphony, but also other songs from all over the world. L.A. Daiku has performed on many stages including the Daiku with Cal Phil at the Disney Hall in L.A., the annual Daiku concert in Naruto Japan, as well as our own concerts locally. We performed for "Love to Nippon", an event for the 3/11 Tohoku earthquake victims last year. For our Fifth Anniversary Spring Concert in 2014,we invited San Francisco Forest Choir which was celebrating their tenth anniversary. Our upcoming events will be L.A. Daiku June Concert and a premiere Japanese opera of "the Princess Kaguya" at Aratani Theatre in L.A. in August. We practice 6:30PM - 9PM every Tuesday at Hollywood Japanese Cultural Institute ( HJCI). L.A. Daiku is a member of the All-Japan Association of Daiku Choral Societies. L.A. Daiku is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Jodoin Buddhist Temple of California ( 浄土院 ) Jodoin is a local temple that is providing services in Pure Land Buddhism at the Hollywood JCI on the third Sunday of each month. Jodoin can trace its history back to 1936, when the late Bishop Reikai Nozaki first established Jodoin in Little Tokyo. Jodoin has continuously provided Pure Land Buddhism to the community since its founding. Services are conducted in both English and Japanese and everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments are served after the service. Contact: Kent Kawai at mkawaiusa@netscape.net or (310)

3 Hollywood Judo Dojo ( ハリウッド柔道道場 ) Hollywood Judo Dojo now has its own Board. 8 members from our dojo (including Head Instructor Gary Freeman and Head Coach Philippe Morotti) will have monthly discussions to seek opportunities to improve our dojo and the training experience for all members. Our very first meeting was held in August. Our members continue to achieve great results at local and national tournaments. In May, we traveled to Irving, TX to compete at the USA Senior Nationals where we won 3 gold, 7 silver and 1 bronze medals. Most recently in August, our 5 man team won gold at the Golden State Open to become the most feared judo team in California! These are just some of the tournament highlights we can proudly share. We enjoyed success as individuals and also as a team. Tuesday's Kids Class continues to be a success. Even through the months during summer break, we saw a steady number of kids visit us to train. Summer break is over now, so we're expecting everyone to be back in full force. We have gained a few new members lately. We're hoping the growing trend continues. Hollywood Judo Dojo will be hosting its first Women's Self-Defense Class on Saturday, September 19th. We already have a list of interested participants that is sure to grow in the coming weeks. It is a one time class, but we hope to make it a recurring class that we may host 3-4 times a year. The Church was merely a woodframed hall that was located on Cahuenga Boulevard between Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard. Only the dedicated could find it behind a row of small Japanese stores, which included the Imai Grocery, Hara's Barber Shop, a laundry store, and the Toribuchi Market. Thus, the Church humbly began with much faith and hope. A group of Buddhists led by Yoshitaro Hirai, raised funds and constructed a 3 room building at 1423 Cahuenga Boulevard near Cole Street, just south of Sunset Boulevard. The Bukkyokai began to hold services at these new facilities. Ministers assigned from Nishi Hongwanji would make the then long trip from Little Tokyo to the Hollywood Bukkyokai in order to conduct services. After WW I ended, a station wagon brigade started, transporting 20 Bukkyokai children to join the larger Nishi Hongwanji group at the Yamato Hall, located on Jackson Street and Central Avenue in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo, for a combined Sunday School. 5 They successfully expanded their church community in 1928 by renting the facilities of the Hollywood Gakuen Japanese School on Ivar Street, one block east of Cahuenga and one block south of Sunset Boulevard. They successfully expanded their church community in 1928 by renting the facilities of the Hollywood Gakuen Japanese School on Ivar Street, one block east of Cahuenga and one block south of Sunset Boulevard. Increasing rent due to rising land values and high property taxes forced the Church to move into the newly built facilities of the Hollywood Japanese Language School in This new location at 3929 Middlebury Street, just north of the Hollywood Freeway, provided the Church community with sufficient space to hold services in its multi-purpose Kaikan, or hall. It served as the new, stable foundation that would further allow the church to grow. By the outbreak of the Second World War, the Bukkyokai community consisted of about 90 families, but the end of the war brought back 75 families. Through the years between 1950 and 1960, membership proceeded to fluctuate between 60 and 75 families, which helped raise the Sunday school enrollment to up to 125 students. In 1967, the members voted for the construction of its own church facilities with classrooms. A building committee was formed by the following members: Bob Honda as Chairman, Masaru Okamoto as Co-Chairman, Tetsu Sugimoto, Tetsu Santo, Hideo Izumo, Masanori Nishikawa, Toshiaki Kozai, George Iwasaki, and Joseph Takahashi. They started a building fund and raised money through the donations contributed by the members and from various fundraising activities. These activities included carnivals, car washes, paper drives, and senbei sales. Eventually, three properties in the neighborhood of the institute were purchased, and an architect was contracted to draw plans for the new Hollywood Buddhist Church (HBC). However, by the time the plans were completed, a new and larger facility no longer seemed necessary or financially feasible due to membership attrition, a decrease in Sunday school enrollment, and the high costs of construction. It was eventually voted by the members to abandon the plan. The properties acquired for the building project were sold, and the funds were used to support the Bukkyokai's mother church, Nishi Hongwanji, and various other organizations. By 1970, membership dwindled to 50 families with about 60 students, and in the years following, the Sunday School for children discontinued. The Japanese population of the neighboring areas decreased as many of the Sanseis, third generation Japanese Americans, moved away, and with it a decrease in the church membership as well. Currently, there are about 15 active families with an average attendance of members and guests who attend services. The Hollywood Buddhist Church continues to hold services, and remains a branch church of the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple (LAHHBT). The Church is grateful to have a minister from LAHHBT conduct its eight annual services. Currently, Reverend Koho Takata serves as the HBC resident minister who conducts services. A luncheon usually follows the service as a time for members and guests to socialize and reconnect with old-time members, their children and grandchildren. Happily, the Church has also been able to welcome new members and guests. (History Committee (until 1996): Yoshiye Honda chairman, Hideo Izumo, Masanori Nishikawa, Yemiko Okumoto; (1996 to 2015): Susan Oiwake) On Sunday, Nov. 1st, 2015, HBC will celebrate its 100th Commemoration with a special morning service and afternoon lunch reception. 6 BUILDING & PROPERTY MAINTENANCE Since the Spring Newsletter, a lot of work has occurred. Volunteers, Tok Chida, Masao Yoshida, with back up help from Jerry Naito & Asao completed the 40 long metal safety railing between the back entrance of the Social Hall to the 2 story Multipurpose building. Mighty Tok, at 91, did much of the work of cutting, bending & welding the pipe. Volunteers, Hiroshi Yoshida and his friend, Frank Gonzalez, sanded, primed and painted the lower cabinets in the Annex building (the green building as you enter the parking lot). Masao Y. & Asao provided back up support. The newly painted cabinets looks great. Aaron Brown of the Judo Dojo replaced two faucets, one of which he donated, in the same kitchen. This was a back breaking job as Aaron had to maneuver his large frame under the sink! Aaron also repaired the folding wood room divider so the large room can be separated in half. The main room of the A.B. was previously painted by our hardworking caretakers, Jorge and Keiko. The Annex building has about 1200 square feet available for community use. The roof of our original Social Hall building required replacement after many decades of service (no one knows when it was last replaced). Major leaks did significant damage, over the years, on the walls & ceiling atop the stairs to the stage adjacent to the kitchen. During the past couple of weeks, we hired experienced help to repair and paint this area, as well as the office, kitchen and restroom of our long neglected, yet most used, Social Hall. 7 non-working or leaky windows were replaced, including one of the nine large windows in the S.H., 2 in the office, 3 in the kitchen, and 1 window in the Annex building kitchen. Replacing the remaining 8 large windows will cost about $400 each. Perhaps, some generous donors will appear! Yes, the HJCI needs your generous support through our user groups, members and friends to continue its legacy of service and support to promote & share Japanese culture, traditions, and activities. Under the guidance and experience of Tok Chida (our ageless wonder), Masao, Takashi Yoshida, Wayne Kohatsu and Aaron Brown added lb concrete blocks (which were actually made by Tok) to increase the height of the concrete columns that support the wrought iron fencing along the Juanita Ave. These same volunteers also added two feet (over 50 in length) to the existing chain link fencing that stretches along Juanita Ave. The height of the metal side gate will also be increased. The purpose of this work is to discourage trespassers from hopping the fence and gate area. Thanks to all of these hardworking volunteers! Wish List: pilotless stove, energy efficient refrigerator, monetary donations, additional volunteers Photo: Community volunteers in 1970th Donations March 2015 to Sept Thank You! Donation in memory of Mrs. Yoshiko Kimura, wife of longtime HJCI board member and supporter, the late Mr. Fred Kimura. Mrs. Miyuki Ichinose is donating 12 folding chairs to be used in the office and for special occasions at the HJCI, inc., HBC's 100th Commemoration service. She is also generously donating a custom made wooden podium. The podium is being built by Jerry Naito's 90+ year young father who is a master wood worker. Monetary donation from the Masumiya family toward Social Hall repair and improvements. *HJCI is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Donations are tax deductible. 6

8 Rev. Horikoshi: Early Beginning of Hollywood Japanese School By David Takahashi (Grandson of Rev. Tokujiro Horikoshi) Our grandfather (Reverend Tokujiro Horikoshi) was born in Gumma-ken, Japan. He always wanted to come to America since the days he was a young boy in Gunma-ken. One day, our grandfather stole away in a barrel on a freighter bound for Seattle, Washington. When our grandfather was discovered, he was given a choice of working on the ship or being thrown overboard. We are very grateful that our grandfather made the right decision. After arriving in Seattle while learning English, our grandfather worked his way down the Pacific coast. It was while living in Seattle when our grandfather, Mr. T. Horikoshi became a Christian. Our grandfather s goal was to attend a university. It is believed that approximately 1911 through 1912 our grandfather settled in the Hollywood area in Los Angeles. Where he settled was very close to Hollywood Blvd. and Vine Street. Carter Court was the center of the Japanese American community in Hollywood. Mr. Carter, who loved Japanese people, Mr. & Mrs. Horikoshi leased all the buildings in Carter Court to the Japanese community in Hollywood. The location of Carter Court was at Ivar and Selma Avenues, which is not far from Hollywood Blvd. and Vine St. It was around 1911 and 1912 when Japanese volunteers in Hollywood got together to start a Japanese language school in Carter Court. Under the leadership of our grandfather, Mr. T. Horikoshi, the Japanese volunteers were Rev. Minokichi Tsunokai, Mr. Kosugi, Mr. Nagata, Miss Johnson and Mr. Otsubo. There men and women were the early volunteer leaders to organize the Japanese School in Hollywood. On April 2 nd, 1915, the opening ceremonies and dedication took place at Carter Court and the Hollywood Japanese Language School was established in Hollywood. A dedication ceremony was conducted on this date in Carter Court for the school. The congratulatory address at the opening ceremonies in Carter Court. Approximately four years later in March, 1919, Mr. Yoshitaro Hirai relocated the Japanese school to Cahuenga Blvd. and Cole Street, not far from Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. They began holding Japanese Language classes at this new location. It was on March 4 th, 1923, the Hollywood Japanese Presbyterian Church was founded and organized by Rev. Tokujiro and Mrs. Grace Horikoshi at 1433 Tamarind Ave. Los Angeles, CA Note: David s mother Aiko was the the daughter of Rev. Tokujiro and Grace E. Horikoshi. David is the son of Aiko and the grandson of Horikoshi s. 8
