1 MSC FEA 2008 r1 Important Information About this Release Dear MSC FEA Customer, Congratulations on receiving MSC FEA 2008 r1, one of MSC.Software s core engineering solutions. In an effort to provide our customers with the most current releases, we have changed the delivery and installation procedure for MSC FEA 2008 r1. MSC FEA customers will now have access to the Patran and MSC Nastran installations. The installation procedure should follow these steps: 1) Install MSC Nastran 2008 r1 2) Install Patran 2008 r1 a. Select the MSC FEA icon during Installation 3) Install Patran 2008 r1 Documentation (optional) Please see the individual product installation guides for more information. 4 MSC Nastran 2008 r1 Please read before installing MSC Nastran 2008 r1 This document provides important information about MSC Nastran not contained in the Release Guide or Installation and Operations Guide. It is intended to help you install and use MSC Nastran. This document contains the following sections: License Requirements Delivery Media Microsoft Compute Cluster Microsoft Windows Support ILP-64 Versions Pre-Release Capabilities MSC Nastran 2008 r1 Documentation Implicit Nonlinear (SOL 600) Items License Requirements MSC Nastran 2008 r1 does not require any changes to license files for existing licensed modules. License files for newly-purchased products or modules have been sent to your designated contact. Delivery Media MSC Nastran is delivered on the following systems: HP HP-UX PA-RISC 64-bit HP HP-UX Itanium2 IBM AIX 64-bit SGI IRIX 64-bit Sun Solaris 64-bit x86 Linux 32-bit Intel Linux 64-bit Itanium2 Intel Linux 64-bit Itanium2 SGI Altix x86-64 Linux 64-bit x86/x86-64 Windows 32-bit/64-bit Microsoft Compute Cluster A port to Microsoft Compute Cluster Server (CCS) is included in this release. See the Installation and Operations Guide for details.

5 MSC Nastran 2008 r1 Microsoft Windows Support MSC Nastran does not support MS Windows 2000, 98, or 95. MS Windows XP is required for MSC Nastran 2008 r1. ILP64 Versions Some of the platforms contain an ILP64 version of MSC Nastran in the "MSC_ARCH"/i8 directory. This version is capable of addressing additional memory and running larger problems. To run this version you specify mode=i8 or mode=ilp64 on the command line. Please refer to the Installation and Operations Guide for more information on the mode keyword. Pre-Release Capability The following capability is regarded as pre-release. 1. Rotor Dynamics enhancement to include the effects of rotor stiffness, mass, and damping effects in SOL 200 optimization. This capability should not be employed in any analysis except for the purpose of testing and verifying the functionality itself. MSC Nastran Documentation Updated documentation for MSC Nastran is comprised of: Release Guide Installation and Operations Guide Quick Reference Guide These documents are provided in electronic format in the sub-directory: install_dir/msc2008/doc/pdf_nastran/ where install_dir is the installation directory. Implicit Nonlinear (SOL 600) Items Streaming input is not available with DDM (parallel processing) or if user subroutines are necessary. For those cases, do not include the streaming input option and run SOL 600 as before. Streaming input should not be used if a special version of Marc is necessary for your particular application. In this case, specify one of the PATH options on the SOL 600 Executive statement in conjunction with a file to point the analysis to the location of the version of Marc that is desired.

6 MSC Nastran 2008 r1 The CASI iterative solver (MARCSOLV=9) is recommended over the Sparse iterative solver (MARCSOLV-2) for serial jobs. The CASI iterative solver is not presently available for parallel (DDM) simulations, and if an iterative solver is required the conjugate convergence tolerance (CJTOL on NLSTRAT entry) should be set to or smaller. The CASI solver is not available with DMIG input and the solver will automatically be switched to the sparse multi-frontal solver should DMIG s be entered. All models using parallel processing should set KIND on the PARAMARC entry to zero (or leave the field blank). Only the NPROC entry should be used. If KIND is not zero or blank, it will automatically be reset to zero and a warning message issued. If MATF is used and failure indices are desired, they must be specified using MARCOUT with entries E91 to E103. The previous SOL 600 restriction that MCID can only be specified using rectangular coordinates has been removed. Cylindrical or spherical coordinates may now be used. However, since this requires the Marc COORD SYSTEM option which is not available with DDM, such jobs requesting parallel processing will automatically be changed to single-processor jobs and a warning message issued. Parallel processing using DDM is not available on Windows 64-bit using the i4 version. The creation of an Adams compatible MNF file is not possible on Windows 64-bit using the i8 version. The CTRIA has occasionally shown poor behavior in large displacement shell simulations using the updated Lagrange procedure, the CQUAD4 is the preferred element. The reduced integration elements occasionally show hour glassing (zero energy modes), so the full integration elements are recommended (default). Rigid contact for 2D analysis, defined using grids, requires the setting of new Ix and Iy fields on the BCBODY entry. Models with large grid and/or element ID s are available on all platforms except for SGI IRIX (see the SOL 600 executive command on how to activate large ID s). On Windows platforms, the path to the Marc version being used cannot contain spaces or dashes.

Patran 2008 r1 Highlights: Updated CAD interfaces provide compatibility with Parasolid 19, CATIA V5 R18, and UG NX 5. Support for both MSC Nastran and MD Nastran solvers. Integration with SimManager to easily publish and access model and data files. MD Nastran support for Advanced Nonlinear and Explicit Analyses. Extended Support for Marc Multiphysics Analyses. 9 Patran 2008 r1 Please read before installing Patran 2008 r1 This document contains important information about the Patran 2008 r1 release that is not contained in the Release Guide and/or Installation and Operations Guide: License Requirements Patran 2008 r1 does not require any changes to license files for existing licensed modules. License files for newly-purchased products/modules have been sent to your designated contact. MD-Enabled Patran Licensing The Nastran Preference in Patran 2008 r1 has been enhanced to include the MD Nastran solver support that was previous only available in MD Patran. MD Patran customers using seat based licensing will be migrated to Patran 2008 r1 and will receive new licensing. MD Patran customers using Enterprise Advantage Licensing will already have the required licensing as part of their EALU license. There are no changes required to existing Patran customers. FLEXlm Version A FLEXlm 10.8 license server is required for all platforms. If your installation points to an older license server, you will have to install the new FLEXlm license server. 10 Patran 2008 r1 Installation Issues Windows: Patran installs as a normal user with the following exceptions. Administrative privilege is required to install Analysis Manager in order to have the software visible to other users and to set up file associations. Also, since Patran 2008 r1 is developed with Visual C , the installer automatically installs the Microsoft Visual C Redistributable Package (x86) runtime components of Visual C++ libraries required to run applications developed with Visual C++ on a computers that do not have Visual C installed. Running Patran 2008 r1 on a different computer than originally installed by accessing it from a shared disk may require these runtime components to be installed separately. They can be downloaded from Microsoft at this URL: This also will directly affect those using Patran Thermal and dbaccess to create custom programs. Compilers must be upgraded to the levels mentioned here. Also see the Installation and Operations manual for compiler levels of other platforms. Database Conversion Issues / Software Updates The database conversion programs delivered with Patran convert old (non-interbase) versions of Patran databases to the latest schema. If you have older Patran installations, it is highly encouraged that you upgrade the convert programs in those installations to the newer convert executables. This can be done by copying the convert programs from the new installation to the older installations or downloading the convert programs from MSC s support web site. 11 Patran 2008 r1 Running MD Nastran Models or Demos from Session Files Models (including demo models) built in Patran 2008 r1 using session or journal files created with previous Patran versions may fail if run in MD Nastran R2.1 or previous versions. MD Nastran R2.1 and previous versions only had one adaptive load incrementation method available for SOL 400 which was based on NLPARM. Because of this, MD Patran R2.1 and previous versions would write the NLPARM entry if the user chose either Adaptive or Fixed as the Increment Type on the Analysis - Subcases Subcase Parameters Load Increment Parameters form. The default Increment Type on the form was Adaptive and any session or journal file written by one of these versions of Patran would record Adaptive as the Increment Type. MD Nastran R3 added a new type of adaptive load incrementation for SOL 400 using the NLADAPT bulk data entry, so Patran 2008 r1 was modified to write SOL 400 Nastran input files using NLADAPT when Adaptive is the requested Increment Type (the default in Patran 2008 r1 is Fixed which writes NLPARM). If you try to run one of these Nastran input files in MD Nastran R2.1 or earlier you will get an error message saying that the NLADAPT entry is not supported. These files will run successfully in MD Nastran R3 and later versions. Known Limitations Issues with mid-surface creation There are several problems with mid-surface creation. It is possible that surfaces can be created that cannot be meshed. (CRs , , , ) Step AP 203 and AP 209 issues on HP-UX For some models, there are problems importing and exporting Step AP 203 and AP 209 part files on HP-UX. (CRs , , ) Problem with CBUSH forces in Marker Vector Plots Marker vector plots with CBUSH forces in a local coordinate system may not display in that local system, but in the global system incorrectly

12 Patran 2008 r1 if the output is from a MSC Nastran OP2 file. They will display correctly if the results are from an MSC Nastran XDB file. (CR ) Cannot Import XMT File in a certain order The second import of an XMT file may fail if it uses a different module than the first. The workaround is to restart Patran and import the second XMT file. (CR ) Cannot see large files in the file dialog box on Linux and HP-UX (Itanium) On the Linux platforms, files greater than 2GB in size may not be listed in the file dialog box for selection. A workaround is to type in the name of the file manually. (CR ) Incorrect element strain for solids obtained from op2 file With CHEXA elements and PSOLID cordm (identification of material coordinate system) set to 1 (element coordinate system), the strains reported within Patran are incorrect in the op2 file. The XDB is OK. (CR 30579) Some solid bodies dissociated into sheet bodies Using the Parasolid translator for Catia and ProE, some bodies may be dissociated into sheet bodies. (CRs ) Pro/E 64 bit Patran is unable to directly access Pro/E CAD parts on a 64 bit machine. 32 bit machines work correctly. A work around is to use the Parasolid import mechanism on 64 bit machines.
