12 Core Ethics Vol. Aiming to Achieve Social Understanding of a Neglected Disease: The Development and Progress of the CRPS Patients Association of South Korea ONO Mayuko Abstract: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is an intractable disease with chronic pain as a main symptom. In Japan, so few people know about it that it is hard for patients to even form a patients association. In South Korea, however, CRPS patients can get government support for medical treatment fees and CRPS is becoming regarded as a disability thanks to the activities of a patients association, the CRPS Patients Association of South Korea. The purpose of this study is to reveal the history and activities of the association and to examine the role it plays and problems it faces though an interview with the group s representative. The study finds four characteristics or significant points regarding the success of the association: ( ) an overlooked disease was given visibility; ( ) understanding of CRPS was spread through the media to society; ( ) the patients association achieved strong cooperation with medical practitioners; ( ) the association regarded the security of patients rights as most important. In this way, the visibility of the mental experience and social existence of CRPS patients was raised; consequently, the patients needs, which were previously invisible, could be better served.
