1 No.6, (2005) Regional Integration East Asian Community Vision HORIUCHI Hiroshi Nihon University, Graduate School of Social Culture Studies In an effort to pursue the ambitious aim of laying the foundation for turning the 21 st century into the Asian century, the inaugural East Asia Summit, which brought 16 regional leaders for the first time, was held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on December 14 th However, as originally conceived by Malaysia and pushed by China, the new summit group was to include only the 10 ASEAN nations along with Japan, China, South Korea despite of the fact that Japan energetically pursued to include all 16 nations. That would have made it a vessel for Chinese diplomatic leadership in a forum distinct from other groups, such as the ASEAN Regional Forum or the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, that also include the United States of America.
