44 B English Locating the controls See the illustrations on pages CD player (rear) 1 VOL (volume) + *1 / buttons 2 u *1 (play/pause) button 3 x (stop) /CHG (charge) button 4./> (AMS *2 /search) buttons 5 (group) +/ buttons 6 Terminals for the charging stand/ external charging stand 7 OPEN switch Squeeze the switch from both sides. 8 HOLD switch Slide the switch in the direction of the arrow to disable the buttons on the CD player. 9 OPERATION lamp (front) Color of the lamp changes according to the type of music source being played. Red: Audio CD, Green: ATRAC3plus/ ATRAC3 files, Orange: MP3 files For some time after the CD is inserted, the lamp lights up in red, orange and green in turn. This lamp also functions as the HOLD lamp and the CHG (charge) lamp. q; i (headphones)/line OUT (OPTICAL) jack Switch the function of the jack, using the menu. Remote control 1 VOL (volume) +/ control Turn to adjust the volume. 2 x (stop) button 3 Jog lever (. u/ent >) u (play/pause)/ent (enter): Press during stop to start play, and press during play to pause play. When selecting menu items, press to enter the selection. 45 Display (remote control) 1 Disc indication Lights up while the CD player is playing. 2 Track number indication 3 Character information display While playing an audio CD, disc name, track name, etc. appear, if recorded on the CD. While playing an ATRAC CD/MP3 CD, group name, file name, etc. appear, if recorded on the CD. 4 Play mode indication Shows various playmodes such as shuffle play and program play. shows repeat play. 5 SOUND indication Shows the SOUND setting has been selected on the menu. 6 Battery indication Roughly shows the remaining power of the battery. If flashes, the battery is depleted. 7 Group indication For ATRAC CD/MP3 CD only 8 Play list indication For MP3 only 9 Bookmark indication During play, the indication shows a track has a Bookmark. 0 Timer indication Shows the OFF TIMER setting has been selected on the menu. Playback options You can enjoy the following playback options using the P MODE/ button on the remote control. 47 Troubleshooting Should any problem persist after you have checked these symptoms, consult your nearest Sony dealer. Symptom The volume does not increase even if you turn VOL +/ in the + direction repeatedly (even if you press VOL + repeatedly on the CD player). No sound, or noise is heard. Certain files cannot be played. The playing time is too short when powered with the dry battery. The playing time is too short when powered with the rechargeable battery. Lobatt appears in the display. The CD does not play. HI dc In appears in the display. The CD does not play or No disc appears in the display when a CD is placed in the CD player. Cause and/or corrective action c AVLS is set to ON. Set it to OFF. c AUDIO OUT is set to LINE. Set it to HP. c Connect the headphones/earphones plugs firmly. c Plugs are dirty. Clean the headphones/earphones plugs with a dry soft cloth periodically. c You tried to play files saved in a format that is not compatible with this CD player. c Check that you are using an alkaline battery and not manganese battery. c Replace the battery with a new LR6 (size AA) alkaline battery. c Charge and discharge the rechargeable battery several times. c The rechargeable battery is used up completely. Charge the battery. c Replace the battery with a new LR6 (size AA) alkaline battery. c An AC power adaptor which is rated higher than the one supplied or recommended is being used. Use only the supplied AC power adaptor or the car battery cord recommended in Optional accessories. c The CD is dirty or defective. c Check that the CD is inserted with the label side up. c Moisture condensation has occurred. Leave the CD player aside for several hours until the moisture evaporates. c Close the lid of the battery compartment firmly. c Make sure the battery is inserted correctly. c Connect the AC power adaptor to an AC outlet securely. c Press the jog lever (CD player: press u) after one second or more has passed since the AC power adaptor was connected. c The CD-R/RW is blank. c There is a problem with the quality of the CD-R/RW, recording device, or application software. 48 Troubleshooting Symptom OPERATION lamp flashes on the CD player when you press a button, and the CD does not play. Cannot adjust the volume. During recording with optical digital connection, the track number cannot be recorded correctly. The rechargeable battery cannot be charged. Playback starts from the point you stopped. (resume function) Rustling noise is heard from the CD. When using with a connected stereo system, the sound is distorted or noisy. During playback of an ATRAC CD or MP3 CD, the CD does not rotate but you can hear the sound normally. NO FILE appears on the display after you press the jog lever or when the lid of the CD player is closed. When closing the lid of the CD player, the CD starts to rotate. You cannot operate the CD player properly using the remote control. Cause and/or corrective action c The buttons are locked. Slide the HOLD switch back. c AUDIO OUT is set to LINE. Adjust the volume using the volume control on the connected device. c Set AUDIO OUT to HP. Adjust the volume using VOL +/ on the CD player. c Record the track number again using a MiniDisc recorder, DAT recorder, etc. c See the instruction manual that comes with the recording device. c The rechargeable battery is not inserted in the battery compartment. c The terminals on the CD player or the charging stand are dirty. Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. c The CD is playing. Turn it off. c The CD player is not placed correctly on the charging stand. Place the player on the stand securely and make sure that the OPERATION lamp lights up. c The resume function is working. To start play from the first track, press the jog lever during stop (CD player: press and hold u) until the first track starts playing, or open the lid of the CD player. Or remove all power sources, then insert the battery or connect the AC power adaptor again. c Close the lid of the battery compartment firmly. c AUDIO OUT is set to LINE. Adjust the volume of the connected device. c AUDIO OUT is set to HP. Adjust the volume using VOL +/ on the CD player. c The CD player is designed to stop the rotation of an ATRAC CD or MP3 CD during playback to reduce the power consumption. The player is not malfunctioning. c There are no ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3/MP3 files in the CD. c A CD-R/RW from which the data has been erased is being used. c The CD is dirty. c The CD player is reading the information on the CD. The player is not malfunctioning. c The buttons on the CD player are kept pressed by mistake. 48
49 Symptom The LCD display becomes hard to see or slows down. is flashing quickly on the display of the remote control, and you cannot locate the beginning of the track or the specific point in the track. Play stopped abruptly. Cause and/or corrective action c You are using your CD player at high temperatures (above 40 C/ 104 F) or at low temperatures (below 0 C/32 F). At room temperature, the display will return to its normal operating condition. c The CD player has entered the preparation stage of Bookmark track play. Press P MODE/ repeatedly until disappears from the display. c OFF TIMER has been set. Change the setting to OFF. English 49
