H. 7 6 This is a study of Franz Schubert s Lied Der Doppelgänger from Schwanengesang D , the purpose of which is to inspect the kind of harmonic technique that expresses the world of Heinrich Heine s poetry. The harmonic characteristics of this Lied are: 1) Passacaglia, 2) dominant seventh chords and their metamorphoses into various augmented sixth chords, 3) enharmonic modulation of dominant seventh chords and augmented sixth chords. The passacaglia s subject appears a total of 4 times, and the dominant chord inside it changes gradually into a German-sixth chord. And this German-sixth chord is also a pivot chord from the only modulation in this Lied. This modulation is the point in this Lied in which the main character s ( ein Mensch ) confusion reaches a climax. Everything is closely linked to these features. It is concluded that the study of these harmonic techniques is indispensable to express the state of ein Mensch slowly advancing towards certain insanity
