1 WASEDA RILAS JOURNAL NO. 1 ( ) The change in the subculture, literature and mentality of the youth in East Asian cities Manga, animation, light novel, cosplay and Murakami Haruki Takumasa SENNO Since the 1990 s, the advances in globalization have provoked many arguments about the marginalization of literature. The phenomenon, already underway, of young people turning away from literature has often been discussed. This phenomenon can be seen in not only Japan but also many large East Asian cities. However, many literary works are in fact still well received by young people today. For example, Murakami Haruki is especially popular in East Asian cities. If we extend the category of literature to manga and light novels, the number of works that sell well increases. This suggests that young readers have not yet completely turned away from literary works; they are probably just more fascinated by sub-cultural works or alternative literature than belles-lettres. What are the consequences of this marginalization of literature? I think the marginalization is closely concerned with the change in the approach to reading literary texts, which has brought with it a change in the relationships between readers and literature. The manner in which young readers today read texts obviously differs from past approaches to the same. In short, what they mainly appreciate is not the story or the idea of the works; rather it is the character of the dramatis personae. Additionally, for these young readers, dialogue with other fans of a particular work is of great importance. They have access to an expansive community of fans, and enjoy discussing character with them. They can feel a sense of participation through such discussions. Additionally, if they are able to make good contributions to the discourse, they can invite a great response from other fans and establish comfortable positions in the community. Very importantly, the aforementioned phenomenon may also have something to do with young people s isolation or feelings of hopelessness. Based on the questionnaire surveys and interviews in Beijing, Shanghai, Taibei, Hongkong and Singapore, I aim to analyze the phenomenon in East Asian cities, and clarify the implications for the cultural changes underway in these cities
