2 ~ Pastor s Note ~ The first funeral Mass for Rev. Francis X. Russo, OFM Cap, was celebrated on Saturday, January 22nd at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in NW Washington, DC. where Fr. Russo had served as a pastor. The second funeral Mass for Fr. Russo was celebrated on Monday, January 24th in Pittsburgh, PA. and was followed by his burial there. I was fortunate to be able to attend the funeral Mass at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, along with Fr. Andy Aaron and a good number of Holy Family parishioners. Cardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap, the Archbishop of Boston and a fellow Capuchin who knew Fr. Russo for many years, was the celebrant of the Mass. Rev. Bill Gillum, OFM Cap was the homilist. Fr. Russo would have turned 88 years old on this coming March 20th. Fr. Russo celebrated over these past many years Masses in the Archdioceses of Baltimore, Washington and in the Diocese of Arlington, VA. Even into the Fall of 2021, it was not unusual for Fr. Russo to celebrate four Masses on any given weekend at four different Churches. He was an intelligent man who brought the Lord Jesus love and compassion to so many people. Fr. Russo celebrated Mass at his beloved Holy Family as Fr. Bill remembered our parish in his homily, for more than thirteen years. May he rest in peace. If you would like to read Fr. Russo s obituary, please go to our parish website homepage. We continue to celebrate an outdoor 11:15am Mass here at Holy Family every Sunday (see photo below) unless there is a down pour of rain or a measurable accumulation of snow. The Mass on Sunday, January 23rd was attended by some 280 persons. The Outdoor Mass has been consistently our most highly attended Mass. I thank the staff members and the parishioners, who help prepare for this Mass each Sunday and the take down afterwards, for making this Mass possible. I thank Bill MacDonald and his son Matthew for lending us their FM Transmitter to allow those attending the outdoor Mass to listen to the Mass on their radio, (station 90.3FM) in the warmth of their vehicle. Lastly, I also want to thank the ushers, the sacristans, the altar servers, lectors and Eucharistic Ministers for their service at this each week. God Bless, He said to them, Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, Isn t this the son of Joseph? Lk 4:2122 Mon. Tues. SPRING AND LENT STUDIES: Holy Family is offering many opportunities for you to grow in your faith this Spring. Check out the many programs available at HOLY FAMILY PAID POSITION: Seeking individual with live streaming abilities to use parish equipment with three cameras to live stream 5pm Saturday Vigil Mass. If interested please contact our pastor, Fr. Mike Jendrek at STOCK DONATIONS TO HOLY FAMILY: Donating appreciated stock is an efficient way to make a charitable gift. It s easy and it saves the donor from paying capital gains taxes. If you itemize your deductions you are eligible to deduct the full fair market value of the stock, up to IRS limits. With the stock market near all time highs, utilizing appreciated stock for charitable gifting is worth considering. Effectively you re able to contribute 20% more than if you sold the stock and paid capital gains taxes. Please contact Donna atoffice@hfccmail.orgin the parish office for information on the process for doing this. PARISHIONERS 70½ YEARS AND OLDER: Please remember that if you choose to make a charitable distribution from your traditional IRA account, Holy Family is qualified to receive such a distribution under applicable tax law. There are specific tax advantages for those over 70 and ½ years of age who choose to make these types of charitable donations. The donation must be made directly to the qualified charity and Holy Family will acknowledge each charitable donation in writing as required by tax law. You should of course consult your tax advisor before making a federally taxfree charitable distribution from your IRA.

4 4 S O T CARING FOR CREATION: By the time you read this the statisticians will already have begun declaring this January the coldest in five years or ten years or whatever. What I do know is, January was pretty darn cold. So, what does that mean to us? We can't see it yet, but there will some perennials that will not survive, but most of them will recover and do quite nicely. Those annuals that amazingly survived a few of our recent milder than average winters, most certainly will not this year. Our squirrels seem to be doing quite nicely with several pairs rushing willy nilly all over the place. Love is in the air! Opossums are showing up on porches looking for food. Did you get all your spring flowering bulbs in the ground? I didn't. Just when I was finally ready to plant some crocus and daffodils, it snowed, and the temperature plunged. Those bulbs need the cold cycles to grow and bloom. My only choice was to put them in a bucket and set them out on the porch. I promise to plant them the first chance I get, when the soil thaws just a bit. Thankfully this cold will significantly reduce the tick population for you wood walkers and pet owners. Thank you all for your generosity to the Food Bank! Can you each bring something to Church each week for the poor in our parish and surrounding community?the blue carts for your food donations are in the Narthex, outside the front of the Church, and at the 11:15am Mass outside (tune in at 90.3 FM) and youdon'teven have to get out of the car. Right now the pantry is asking for spaghetti noodles, ramen noodles, pancake mix & syrup, macncheese, paper products and Zip lock bags. Chris Gordon, OFS christophergordon@verizon.net. 5 January 30, 2022 DEACON DOUG S Q & A: How heavy is the crucifix hanging over the altar? LIGHTER SIDE DIVINE DELIVERY A businessman ordered flowers to be sent to the opening of his friend s new branch office. When the businessman got to the event, he was shocked to see the flowers with the inscription Rest in Peace. He was so outraged that he stopped at the florist to complain. It could be worse, the florist said, Just think: Today someone was buried beneath a floral arrangement with the inscription Congratulations on Your New Location! ONE FOR EVERY ROOM One Sunday our priest announced he was passing out miniature crosses made of palm leaves. "Put this cross in the room where your family argues most," he advised. "When you look at it, the cross will remind you that God is watching." As I was leaving church, the woman in front of me walked up to the priest, shook his hand, and said, "I ll take five." CONFESSION En route to church to make his first confession, my nervous sevenyearold grandson asked me what he could expect.
