8 A Survey of Sewing Vocabulary and Skills of High School Students : A comparison between the general and the returnee groups Masumi YAMAZAKI and Kimie IKEZAKI In the process of proceeding with sewing lessons, teachers tend to deal with uneven levels of sewing experience and knowledge of each student. Since there are very few high-schools in overseas countries that provide home economics in their curriculums, there are serious gaps for Japanese high-schools that have several returnees who are just starting there school lives in Japan. Those returnees are worrying how to catch up and get along with this subject, among other classmates who are already familiar with it. In order to determine their level of cognition and degree of skill acquisition,119 returnees and 92 general students were tested in a survey of sewing terms from February to May,2010. The purpose of this survey was to attain their degree of cognition and understanding, level of cognition, and understanding of sewing terms, in order to make the individual difference of their level or skill acquisition. They were surveys to make each student s score of skill learning clear. Then, based on all those scores of cognition and understanding, proper teaching program for each level were discussed. The result was as follows 1 The level of cognition: general students recognized a higher percentage of sewing terms. 2 No difference was found in levels of understanding sewing terms 3 General students showed a higher level of skill acquisition(eg. plain stitches). 4 Returnee students who sewing work at home tended to show higher levels.
