23 The Support Process in Improving Communication Between Elderly with Dementia and the Family Caregiver in Nursing Practice by Visiting Nurse: About Case of Codependency Yukie Suzuki 1, Nobuko Matsuda 2, Shinobu Sakurai 3 Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the process improving the communication between the elderly with dementia and the family caregiver in codependency. We conducted semi-structured interviews with the nurses regarding their attempts at improving the elderly-caregiver communication. The five interview data were analyzed using a descriptive and qualitative method, following the grounded theory approach. Results revealed three categories, these were (1) identifying problems hidden in their daily life, (2) playing a supporting role to assist them with relationship adjustments, and (3) maintaining a good elderly-caregiver relationship while introducing minor adjustments to family caregiver s mental and physical condition. In this study, the visiting nurses found communication problems etc. from control and obsession by codependency, and they helped the elderly with dementia and the family caregiver release their small world. Results the nurses supported the family caregiver can understand relationship with the elderly objectively, and suggest that the need to improve their relationship as it forms the basis for improved the elderly-caregiver communication.
