3 にダンピアがいる O ダンピア ( W i l l i mdmpier イ ギ リ ス ) は 私 掠 船 の 船 員 で あ り 追われて世界を一周することになった そのこと をロンドンに帰ってから 新 世界周航記 ( 6 ) として出版した そこには台風 モン スーン 貿易風 ( T r d ewind) などが明確に述べ られている O ダンピアは船員が歌う作業歌をきき それは台 風のことではないかと気づき 台風について次の ように述べる O 台風は東インド ハリケーンは西 図 パスコ ダ ガマのインドへの航跡(2 インドと場所が違うだけで本質は同じである O 台 風では不気味な暗い雲が厚くなり 第一級の強風 の知識と関心の高さがうかがわれる O 翌 年 6 が NEか ら 吹 き 豪 雨 を 伴 い そ の う ち 時間 月 日のトルデシリャス条約では 西 3 0レグア ほど静穏になり そして前と同じような強い風が となったが それはコロンブスの考えたカナリー SWから再び吹く 諸島とジパングの中間線である O より長く続く パスコ ダ ガマは 年 月にリスボンを出 航しインドを目指したが この航海の特徴は 図 O O これはハリケーンも同じだが どちらも赤道の北で発生し 赤道 の真上ではない と O まさにわれわれが知る台風 でありその日が描かれている O lの よ う に シ エ ラ レ オ ー ネ か ら 南 西 に 大 き く モンスーンは台風に次ぐ強風であり 局地的な コースをとりブラジルに向かい その後東航して 沿岸の風ではない 月と 月に風向が変わる アフリカ南端を目指したことであるへ 8年 5 熱帯地方には中緯度のような四季はないが 雨季 月にインド カリカットに達し 8月末に出航す と乾季がそれにあたる と言う るが まだ夏期の南西モンスーンの時期であり 風系を図 2のように示した (30 O そして貿易風の 向かい風で難航し アフリカ沿岸に達するのに 後年イギリスの調査船船長となり オーストラ 3ヶ月を要した 喜望峰を回ってからは手慣れた リア北西岸からニューギニア ニューブリテン島 コースを帰る これらの航跡をみるとその頃すで 方面を探検し 西オーストラリア州にはダンピア に大西洋の恒常風(貿易風) 偏西風 海流を十 と名のつく港や諸島がある O 分知っていたと推測される O. 風力階級(ビューフオート風力階級) 3. 台風 モンスーン 貿易風 ものごとを明確にするには定量化が必要であ 哲学(科学)とはこの世を支配している一般法 2に分けたポ るO 古くから風向については全周を 3 則をみつけ 予測することである O そのために イント表示がされていたが 強さについての数値 は 事象を分類し単純化し一般化する O 世界の気 F r n c i s 表現はなかった ビューフオート ( 象についてその現象を分類し特徴を公表したもの 英 国 海 軍 ) は ナ ポ レ オ ン B e u f o r t 戦争の 8 0 5年に艦長になり 風力階級のアイデイ アを公にした 彼は風の強さの指標として 帆船の航走 展帆 状態による階級表を示した 無風の Oから強風で 2までの 3 段階に分けた 彼の頭に 帆が張れない 3種類あり それを風の強さ は帆船の航走状態は の指標にした そのため風速の高い範囲では正し く表現できないとして 後年 風力 などと拡張した風力階級表が示されたこともある 図 2 ダンピアによる太平洋の貿易風系 (3) -28- が それはこの成立意義を無視したものであり
