Use Used when asking or explaining the location of inanimate things. There is a sofa in my room. 2 よしださんのいえでんわありません Yoshida-san no ie ni denwa wa arimasen. There isn't a telephone in Mr. Yoshida's house.

B: No, there isn't. 4A: あのへやなありますか A: Ano heya ni nani ga arimasu ka. A: What is in that room? B: テーブルとベッドあります B: Teeburu to beddo ga arimasu. B: There is a table and a bed. Commentary A. あります indicates the existence of inanimate things. B. Used with and verbs that express existence such as あります, indicates the place where N2 is located. C. In cases when it is understood what is, is sometimes omitted. (34)

Structure N2 (Living creature) いますいますせんだれ (Person) ますか :Only studied in MARUGOTO (Starter A1 Rikai) Examples 1わたしのいえいぬいます Watashi no ie ni inu ga imasu. There is a dog in my house. 2 あのへやくせいいません Ano heya ni gakusee wa imasen. There isn't a student in that room. (There aren't any students in that room.)

4 3A: せんせいのうちねこいますか A: Sensee no uchi ni neko ga imasu ka. A: Is there a cat in the teacher's house? (Teacher, do you have a cat at home?) B: いいえいません B: Iie, imasen. B: No, there isn't. (No, I don't.) 4A:301 のへやだれいますか A: San-zero-ichi no heya ni dare ga imasu ka. A: Who is in room 301? B: おとこのくせいいます B: Otoko no gakusee ga imasu. B: There is a male student there. 7 Examples 1たなかさんのいえいす 2つあります Tanaka-san no ie ni isu ga futatsu arimasu. There are two chairs in Mr. Tanaka's house. 2A: いえへやいくつありますか A: Ie ni heya ga ikutsu arimasu ka. A: How many rooms are there in your home? B:3 つあります B: Mittsu arimasu. B: There are three. 3A:104 のへやくせいなんんいますか A: Ichi-zero-yon no heya ni gakusee ga nan-nin imasu ka. A: How many students are there in room 104? B: ふたりいます B: Futari imasu. B: There are two students. Commentary A. number+counters indicates quantity. B. ~つ is used when counting things and ~ん when counting people.

Use Used when describing the nature or characteristics (colour, shape, size, etc) and the condition of an object. A: Is Mr. Shin's house big? B: いいえおおきくないです B: Iie, ookikunai desu. B: No, it isn't./no, it's small. Commentary A. When it is understood from the context what N is, N can be omitted. (23)

Use Used to explain with whom someone lives. Structure (Person) N2(Person) ひとりでとすんでいます (Person) だれとすんでいますか :Only studied in MARUGOTO (Starter A1 Rikai) Examples 1わたしおっととすんでいます Watashi wa otto to sunde imasu.
