Jakarta: Teraju. 302 Faith and Dress : in the Case of Indonesian Muslim Females Yo NONAKA Keywords: Indonesia, Muslimah, veil, hijab, dress This article clarifies the role of the veil and clothes for Muslim females, called Muslimahs, and to what extent faith affects how they dress based on interviews with Indonesian Muslimahs living in Indonesia and Japan. According to previous studies on fashion and the role of clothes, clothes have the function to differentiate a person from others, and at the same time, they also have the function to put him into a certain social group. However, it is clear that the Muslimahs are conscious of God when they dress. They believe that their clothes are not only seen by other people but also seen by God and that God tests their faith in him by seeing how they dress. This makes the Muslimahs dress and cover their heads in accordance with God s guidance. However, God reveals only general guidance about clothes, and detailed matters are left in the hands of human beings. The Muslimahs determine how to dress based on basic rules delivered by God in essence, and the further details

are determined by their own preferences, where they live, and who they interact with. Muslimah s clothes should be considered in a triangle framework; that is the interaction between oneself, others, and God. 303
