井 上 稔 英 4 月 のレポート Hi everyone, it s Toshi. This would be one of the last reports for my study abroad. I still can not believe that within 1 month I ll go back home. Time does not fly though, it went by faster than I thought. I learnt things and made friends more than I expected. As a boarding student, I enjoy being a part of this boarding community of st.stephen s. Some of my friends in my dorm are literally like my brothers and also some day student friends also became my precious friends. With my friends from the same dorm (Gregg AB), I often go out to eat or just hung around downtown. When we are in the dorm, we watch TV shows and movies or just talk. They definitely helped me do anything about this school taught me lots of things. Recently, one of my day student friends invited me for a dinner at her house. I and she take the same theology class and go to a meeting called FACES every tuesdays. Earlier this year, when the class started, of course I knew no one in it, but some started talking to me kindly. She is one of them. I once told her that I am really thankful for that, and then, she said I also came to this school in Sophomore year so I know how uncomfortable you were to fit in this new place. At the dinner, her mom asked me lots of questions about Japan and how I had been doing at the school so far. Every time someone asks me tons of questions, although it takes some work to answer all of them, I am so happy because that means the person has some interest in me, my country, and Japanese culture. This time of year, we all, American high school senior students, are worried about a prom. I think it is the most exciting and concerning event of senior high school students at the same time. Luckily, I had a close friend who is also a senior (of course attractive), so I got to ask her for the prom, and she said yes!! In addition, my friend from the lacrosse team, asked me to come to an after party at his house. 井 上 稔 英 3 月 のレポート I can t believe that March is almost done. I remember that I used to count how many months left and miss my family and friends in Japan. I admit that was really hard time for me when I first came here. I felt as if nobody was interested in me, moreover, I thought I would end up being alone with no friends. Because I was stressed out completely, I tended to think negatively. My family sent a box for me once a month, and I was really looking forward to it. The boxes packed with Japanese stuffs, sometimes with letters from my family members were the best things I could get at that time. I do not really want to go back because I feel like I still have something I have not learned in st.stephen s. Although I still miss my family and friends, I don t do badly. My family doesn t send me a box any more. By the way, as a challenge to new things, I started playing lacrosse. Lacrosse is a really hard and exciting sport. Each player has his own stick and basically you can hit other players with it. Therefore, I got many bruises on my arms these three weeks or so. One thing I am struggling with is that I can not remember teammates names. 日 本 の 食 べ 物 や 家 でよく 見 たその 段 ボールまで 特 別 に 思 えました 今 日 本 へ 帰 る 前 に 自 分 が st.stephen s でもっと 学 べることもっ と 友 達 ができることを 期 待 して 帰 りたい 気 持 ちはほとんどないです そ して 家 族 はダンボールを 送 ってこなくなりました ところで 新 しいことへのチャレンジとして 今 まで 見 たこともなか ったラクロスを 初 めてみました ラクロスはしんどくてとても 激 しいス ポーツです ゴムのボールと 金 属 の 棒 でプレイするのですが 棒 で 人 を たたいても 基 本 OK なのです この 三 週 間 ほどで 腕 にたくさんのアザが できましたがアザぐらいあった 方 がむしろセクシーかなと 思 って 頑 張 っ ています 一 番 の 苦 労 はチームメイトの 名 前 がまったく 覚 えられないこ とです みんなと 話 したり 挨 拶 する 時 に 名 前 がわからないのは 少 し 大 変 です

2 月 のレポート 井 上 稔 英 In the middle of February, my friends back in Momoyama Gakuin high school has graduated. Some of them took pictures of ceremony and posted them online or sent them to me, so I could see some. Since we have been away for only 6 months, I didn t see any big changes in their appearances, but I felt they ve grown up so much inner themselves. While I have been struggling to achieve my own goals, my friends have been studying so hard to do their best at college entrance exams. I guess these months have been real hard time for them, and they ve finished their career in high school. I m really proud of my friends. Although some of them has college entrance exams or have one more year to prepare for that, I would like them all to honor themselves about their finishing high school life in Momoyama. Talking about me in St.Stephen s, I ve got used to life on campus as one of the borders ( students who live in dorms on campus ) completely and got many friends I can spend time with, so I don t dare to try making new friends anymore like I used to. When I came here, I tried exploring and making new friends because there was no place to be. However, now I have friends, groups and places which I feel comfortable to be in, so there is no longer need to explore, feeling nervous and scared. I recently think if I am using fully the opportunity which I earned one way or another. 1 月 のレポート 井 上 稔 英 This month, January was an exciting month for me. The best thing I have done this month was that I joind a soccer team in St.Stephen's for a winter sport. In the U.S., highschools have seasons for sports, which are fall, winter, spring, and summer. I could have joined the team earlier though, I was kind of busy to catch up with my classes at the end of last year. I was little bit nervous to join the club because the team started from September and I thought all the teammates would have their friendship and society. However, they welcomed me kindly so I could behave myself soon after I joined them. We played 5 games, we won one game, lost two, and tied two games. When a game was away, our coach would drive us there, and he took us to dinner after the game. All through these things, I got to be close to my teammates more. Especially, our last game was a really impressive game for me. We did our best until the very last of the game and kept cheering up each other. That game was literally the last game for seniors (12th graders), so we, all the seniors gave thanks to other teammates. Even though I only played for four weeks with them, I had so much things to be grateful for. Through this experience with my teammates, I found out the importance of sports. Soccer connected us as teammates and friends. Even if you are not able to communicate with someone well, you still can be friends with someone by playing sports together. 今 月 の 初 めに St.stephen's で winter sports としてサッカー 部 に 入 りました アメリカの 高 校 で は 部 活 動 はシーズン 制 で 春 夏 秋 冬 とわかれています 去 年 の11 月 からクラブ 自 体 は 始 まってい たのですがクラスについていくので 精 一 杯 でなかなか 時 間 がありませんでした クラブに 入 る 時 は もうみんなチームとして 出 来 上 がってて 輪 に 入 られへんのちゃうかなー と 少 し 不 安 でした が いざ 入 るとチームメイトは 快 く 僕 を 受 け 入 れてくれすぐに 打 ち 解 けることができました 僕 らの 戦 績 は 5 試 合 中 1 勝 2 敗 2 分 けでした アウェイのゲームの 時 はコーチが 車 で1 2 時 間 の 相 手 校 まで 運 転 してくださって 試 合 後 はよく 晩 御 飯 にも 連 れて 行 ってくれました 試 合 後 に 疲 れ 切 ったチームメイトと 足 を 引 きずりながら 入 って 食 べたハンバーガーは 本 当 に 美 味 しかった です 僕 にとって 何 より 印 象 に 残 っているのは 僕 達 の 最 後 の 試 合 です 12 年 生 にとっては 高 校 生 活 最 後 の 試 合 なのでみんな 最 後 の 最 後 まで 頑 張 りました 試 合 後 は12 年 生 の 僕 達 が 後 輩 のチ ームメイトに 感 謝 の 言 葉 を 伝 えました たった 4 週 間 ほどだったけれどもチームメイト 達 と 一 緒 にプレーできて 楽 しかったです この 体 験 を 通 して たくさんの 友 達 を 作 ることができるスポーツの 大 切 さを 実 感 しました サ ッカー 部 に 入 っていなかったらこんなことも 学 べてなかっただろうと 思 うと 途 中 からでも 勇 気 を 出 して 入 ってみて 本 当 に 良 かったなと 思 います

井 上 稔 英 11 月 のレポート In this monthly report, I would like to write about Thanksgiving break from November 21 to 29. Thanksgiving Day stems from the feast in the first year of their emigration, which the pilgrims from England to the american continent had in order to thank for the help of native americans. To celebrate the harvest of the year, in Thanksgiving day, American people make roasted turkey, pumpkin pie, crambery sauce, mashed potato and so on. In the first day of the holidays, my host family took me to San Antonio for sight seeing and NBA game. The downtown of San Antonio is beautiful and historical. I learnt that every building has own history through river tour. At the night, we wacthed sun antonio spurs' game. We were so excited, but Spurs lost. On Thursday, we ate the Thanksgiving meal. That was very delicious and I found out my favorite was pumpkin pie. It was good time to have one dish with everyone. On the way to the school, in the last day of the holidays, my host dad said he can tell that my English is improving. Then, I realized that I had enjoyed conversations with my host family and friends during the holidays, which means I could understand what they talk about. My friends in Japan are working hard for college entrance exam. 井 上 稔 英 10 月 のレポート Thanks to my host family, I could visit two university in Texas in the last weekend of October. One is Texas A&M university and the other is Rice University. I was so impressed on the campus of the Rice university because a university student of the who guided us and students and teachers who were discussing or studying on the campus seemed to enjoy absorbing new things and thank for their environment to study. I felt that students in university should not spend much time for hanging out with their friends or working part-time job like most of Japanese university students do, but be like students I saw in the Rice University. I was motivated to learn more by that experience, and I came to think about what I want to learn in university truly. Incidentally, I would like to talk about how I could improve my poor English. When I came to the U.S. I could hear only some words in conversation. So I tried to find out how to develop hearing skill. I tried exposing myself to native speakers' conversation, always speak to someone, watched some american TV shows with subtitles in my dorm room. However I couldn't be able to hear English soon, but now I can tell that I could improve that. 井 上 稔 英 9 月 のレポート 気 がつけばもう 9 月 も 終 わり 僕 が 日 本 を 出 発 してから 2 ヶ 月 が 経 ちました 9 月 の 終 わりと 言 ってもテキサスではまだまだ 暑 い 日 が 続 き 30 度 を 超 える 日 がほぼ 毎 日 という 感 じです 8 月 とは 打 って 変 わり 今 月 はとても 充 実 した 学 校 生 活 を 送 ることができました 授 業 にも 段 々とついていけるようになってきて 友 人 も 多 くできました 友 人 との 会 話 ではまだまだ 完 全 に 自 分 を 出 し 切 れず 聞 き 手 に 回 ってしまうことが 多 いのが 悔 しいのですが そんな 僕 を 週 末 にはダウンタウンやファストフード 店 イタリアンレストランなどに 連 れて 行 ってくれる 気 のい い 友 人 達 のおかげで 楽 しい 寮 生 活 を 送 っています 日 本 での 高 校 生 活 とは 大 きく 違 って St.Stephen's での 高 校 生 活 は 寮 と 学 校 の 往 復 なのでキャンパスから 出 かける 時 間 は 僕 たちにとっ てリフレッシュできるとても 楽 しい 時 間 なのです 普 段 の 会 話 も 聞 き 取 れる 量 が 増 えてきて 英 語 力 も 段 々と 向 上 してきているのが 自 分 で も 日 々 実 感 しています この 留 学 生 活 を 応 援 してくださっている 人 たちへの 感 謝 の 気 持 ちを 忘 れず まだまだ 不 自 由 の 多 い 英 語 をこれからも 精 一 杯 努 力 して 習 得 していきたいと 思 っています September has already ended,and it has passed 2months since I had left Japan. InTexas, it is still hot in the end of September,so it is above 30 degrees celsius almost every day. Not like August,I could have a good school life this month. Gradually, I came to be able to catch up with the speed of classes, and I also got many friends. Although I still can't behave myself thoroughly and tend to be a listener, thanks to my new kind friends who take me downtown,to fast foods, and to an Italian restaurant, I can enjoy this school life.different from my school life in Japan, going off the campus is refreshing and very good time for us. In daily conversations, the amount of words I can hear is increasing, and so I realize my english skills are developing. Remembering thankful for people who are encouraging me, I will continue to work hard in order to develop my poor English skill.

井 上 稔 英 八 月 のレポート 留 学 生 活 が 始 まって 約 3 週 間 色 んなこと 体 験 し 学 びました その 一 つがアメリカで 生 活 する 上 でコミュニーケーションがとても 重 要 だということです スーパーや 飲 食 店 では 店 員 が 当 然 のように 話 しかけてくるのでそれに 応 えなければいけません また 挨 拶 を 一 度 交 わした 程 度 の 人 でも Hey!!What s up,toshi? と 声 をかけてくれます What s up?"なんて 言 っても 何 も up なんてして 無 いので 初 めは 困 りましたが この 3 週 間 で 対 処 法 を 得 ることができました とりあえず 相 手 が 満 足 するまで"good!! を 連 呼 するのです また 初 めての 経 験 と 言 えばディスコパーティーです アメリカに 到 着 して 約 一 週 間 後 ホストフ ァザーの 誕 生 日 になんとディスコパーティーが 開 催 されたのです 色 んな 料 理 やプレゼントを 持 って Dad の 友 人 や 親 戚 の 大 勢 が 来 てパーティーが 始 まると 皆 が 当 然 のように 踊 り 始 めました 僕 にとってダンスパーティーなど 初 めてだったので 初 めは 部 屋 の 隅 でチワワのように 震 えていま したが 次 第 に 周 りの 人 逹 の 雰 囲 気 に 圧 倒 されはじめ 最 期 にはノリノリで 腰 を 振 りながら 人 生 初 のパーティーを 楽 しむことができました この 日 のように 楽 しいひと 時 もあれば 思 うように 言 葉 を 伝 えられなかったり 会 話 に 入 れず 一 人 になって 落 ち 込 む 日 も 多 くありました そんな 時 に 励 ましになったのが 日 本 にいる 家 族 や 友 人 先 生 方 の 存 在 です 彼 らが 自 分 を 応 援 してくれていた 姿 を 思 い 出 すと 明 日 は 頑 張 れる 明 日 は 違 う 風 になれると 勇 気 が 湧 いてくるのです 彼 らは 留 学 前 の 僕 を 大 きく 助 けてくれただけでなく 留 学 中 にも 僕 の 大 きな 心 の 支 えになってい ます 毎 日 たくさんの 出 来 事 がありますが 一 つ 一 つを 自 らの 成 長 の 糧 としてこの 留 学 生 活 を 実 りある ものにしていきたいと 思 っています Three weeks have passed since I had got to America,and I experienced and learned a lot. One of those,i found out that communication is necessary to live here. In supermarkets or restaurants,clerks talk to me easily. And people who have just met me once also easily say Hey!!What s up,toshi!?. I used to be confused in those situation because nothing was up. But I got a strategy during this 3weeks. That is to say good!! over and over until they come to look pleased. By the way,there was the first disco party for host Dad s birthday. A lot of people came to the host family's house, bringing some stuffs. When the party began, every one started dancing. That was the first party in my life, so at first I couldn t enjoy dancing and trembled like a chiwawa, but gradually others attitude over whelmed me, finally I started dancing with my hips shaking. There are exciting times like the day, also sad days because I couldn t express what I want to say or participate in talking. Those times, what cheer me up is presences of my family and friends, teachers in japan. They helped me a lot before I left Japan, and they still help me

now. I have been through a lot up to now, I would like to grow, treasuring every single incident.
