This game is very similar to the popular Japanese game Doubt. Language Point: Numbers( 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10.) Preparation: Make two sets of number flashcards for each group and one Stop sign for each group. You will need one plastic fan ( 団 扇 ) for each Stop sign. Instructions: Make color copies of the flashcards and Stop sign. Stick the Stop sign on to a plastic fan. You can stick the flashcards to a piece of card for strength. Rules of the Number Challenge The aim of the game is to place the flashcards in numerical order. The first student to finish all their cards is the winner. Alternatively if you play each round for a minimum of 5 or 10 minutes - the student with the least cards after each round is the winner. * Before you play the game please demonstrate the rules for your students. Please see the Demonstration handout for different ideas about how to demonstrate. 1. Divide your students into groups of 5. Give each group a set of flashcard and a Stop sign. 2. Students should shuffle the flashcards and give each group member 4 cards. 3. To choose the first player students will play a round of janken. The first player can place any card down in the center of the group. He or she should say what card they have placed down. For example 5. 4. Students should continue placing cards down in the correct order. For example after 5 is 6. If someone doubts that a player has placed the correct card down he or she should say Stop! and hold up the Stop sign. If the person who says Stop! is correct, the player should collect all the cards in the center of the group. If the person who says Stop! is not correct, he or she should collect all the cards in the center of the group. 5. Students should only place one card down at a time. 6. When the group reaches number 10 the game is over. Students should count their cards and choose a winner. If you are playing for a limited time such as 5 minutes - students should choose a winner after 5 minutes. Students can play one or two more rounds of the game.

Demonstration Ideas Teacher and AET 1. Make big number flashcards. (The flashcards should be big enough for students at the back of the class to see clearly.) 2. Shuffle the flashcards and give your AET 4 cards. Count each card as you give it to your AET. For example : 1, 2, 3,4. Take 4 cards for yourself. Your AET can count each card as you take it. Hold up 1 card and say 1 card. (Explain to students that they should only place one card down each time.) 3. Play a round of Janken with your AET to choose the first player. 4. The first player should choose one card and show it to the students. He or she should put the card down and say what number it is. For example: 4. The next player should choose a card and show it to the students. 5. After you and the AET have each played one card one of you should place the wrong number card down. For example you can say 6 but place down number 3. 6. The other player should pick up the Stop sign and say Stop! Show students the wrong card. The player must take all the cards in the center. 7. Play one more card. This time put down the correct card. The other player should say Stop! Show students the correct card. The person who said Stop! has to take all the cards. Teacher, AET and Supporter If you have an AET and a Supporter you can do a similar demonstration. It will take less time because you can show all the important rules in one round. For example: The Home Room Teacher will play one card. Next the AET will play one card. The Home Room Teacher will say Stop! The AET put down the wrong card so he or she will have to take both cards. Next the Supporter will put down one card. The AET or Home Room Teacher should say Stop! The Supporter s card is the correct card so the person who said Stop! has to take the card. Teacher, AET and Students You can also demonstrate this game at one of your group s tables. You can ask two or three students to join your group. Ask all the other students to watch as you play. Play two rounds of the game and demonstrate how to use the Stop! sign as you play. This style is very interactive and other students will feel confident once they watch their classmates playing the game successfully.
