W e l c o m e t o J A P A N 254 Singer-songwriter Kyrie Kristmanson I am isolating myself, when I am writing songs. Q: I have heard that you have been writing songs in the middle of nature. Why? A: The way I write is that I go into spaces where I feel like I can sing without being heard. I think nature has really informed me in my choice of words. As I walk up a hill while writing, a melody might go up. Yet, I am very aware of my audience and I am writing songs for people. I am sensitive to it, but for the initial part of the creation process, I don't like somebody listening to my songs. Q: But in 2010 you relocated from Canada to Paris. A: Now I am living in Paris and it's very different from what I was used to in Canada. It's a little bit harder to have that sensation that nobody is listening. I am recording my next album now. I chose the studio and it is located just outside Paris and in a forest. The location is really important. Q: This is your first time in Tokyo. How do you feel? A: There is a different vibration between Paris, Canada and Tokyo. I have never felt energy quite like here. It is really interesting for me. I hope I get to write a song before I leave. Q: What is with this fluffy hat you are always wearing? A: It helps me to sing sweetly. (laughter) It also keeps my head warm. I was offered this hat for my 16th birthday. I've been mostly wearing it since I started performing. I shower, sleep and ride my bike with my hat. (laughter) It also brings good luck. You can make a wish on my hat and it'll come true.
