JAPANESE WRITINGS Hiragana, Katakana, kanji Have you ever seen the Japanese writing used in Japan? Japanese writing consists of Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. The Japanese language is a member of the Altaic family of languages, and it has many words in common with Korean and Chinese. However, its syntax is quite different from that of Chinese. Japanese is written using Chinese characters in combination with two syllabaries Hiragana and Katakana. The Chinese characters, Kanji, all have meanings, while Hiragana and Katakana represent sounds only. Hiragana, Katakana(ひらがな カタカナ) The hiragana sound syllabary was developed from the cursive writing of whole Kanji.
