16 Vol.58 No.1 C The Activities of Technical Research Institute of the Japanese Navy between the Wars Minoru Sawai The advent of new weapons such as aircraft, chemical weapons, submarines, and tanks during the First World War heavily influenced the military preparedness in each country between the wars. The First World War not only promoted the diffusion of the idea of the total war, but also taught each nation the significance of new weapons as a gift of newly advanced science and technology. The same situation could be essentially confirmed even in Japan. The focal point of research and development activities led by the Japanese army and navy was aircraft, chemical weapons, communication equipment and radars. It was the technical research institute established in 1923 that shouldered the task in the Japanese navy. The basics of the intimate relationships between the research institutes of the army & navy and the universities & private companies in the process of mobilization of science and technology during the Pacific War had been already formed through the activities of the research institutes of the army & navy in interwar years.
