June 2011 161 Materials on Sponsored Researches by the Japanese Army during the War Minoru Sawai Among many policy devices for the mobilization of science and technology by the army and the navy during the Second World War, the most significant tool was to enclose the outside scientists and engineers as non-regular staff of the military. Table 1 shows the number of the outside researchers by year who were appointed as non-regular staff by the military organizations and research institutes. Table 2 is the list of sponsored researches by the Japanese army which include many important wartime researches. Table 3 demonstrates the number of researchers by organization who were engaged in the sponsored researches. Table 4 shows the number of researchers by organization who were engaged in the sponsored researches of the Army Technology Headquarter. Finally, table 5 is the list of researches which were expected to be promoted by the outside researchers for the Army Ordnance Headquarter.
