(1): Textile Machine Trading between the World Wars Kato Kenta a s a s d The theme of this paper is to clarify the function, which general trading company performed, from a standpoint of trading relation of Mitsubishi Corporation and Kotobuki Works Co. Ltd. The analysis result is shown below. Firstly, Mitsubishi Corporation performed functions to mediate affiliations with foreign companies and to help market cultivation. Specifically, it mediated patent buyout of Hiraturas Casablancas, S.A. by Kotobuki Works Co. Ltd. and went on overseas market study tour with engineers of Kotobuki Works Co. Ltd. In terms of the above-mentioned functions, I focus on the fact that Mitsubishi Corporation conducted careful research on debt, technical capabilities and
54 2012 product reputation of Kotobuki Works Co. Ltd. General trading company gathered actively information of business partner and used it for its own decision-making. Secondly, I would like to emphasize that here we get a glimpse of unprecedented function of general trading company: it is called business administration or supervision of management, which have been overlooked in past study. Employees of Mitsubishi Corporation continuously conducted monitoring and survey of business partners.
