An analysis of the courtship habits of unmarried people Why don t they meet the appropriate partner? In this paper we found three types of single people in Japan; a Moratorium group who need to recognize their procrastination tendencies, a group who need to develop their communication skills and a lower income group. This is the first time the Moratorium group has been identified. Using a sample of 1,500 (collected online), we found three quarters of unmarried people are single (don t have a partner), which might be contributing to the rapidly decreasing birthrate in Japan. A high percentage of the sample maintains the reason for this is that they have not met an appropriate person. Whereas previous studies have interpreted this to be the result of mismatches between single men and women, we suggest it is owing to the individuals either procrastination or experiencing limitations regarding their communication skills.
