2009 19 Transfer of Engineers in Military Sectors to Civilian Sectors just after the Second World War and the Technical Research Institute of the Japanese National Railways Minoru Sawai Just after the Second World War a large number of engineers in the army, the navy and militaryrelated sectors like an aircraft industry, who had to see the closure or abolishment of their organizations, had difficulties to find out jobs. The staff number of the technical research institute of the Japanese National Railways (referred to simply as TRI-JNR hereafter) drastically increased from 482 at the end of March 1945 to 1549 at the end of March 1948, offering working place to the engineers mentioned above. In this paper the process of transfer of engineers in military sectors to civilian sectors and the TRI- JNR will be followed and how the TRI-JNR itself transformed due to the entry of large number of military engineers will be analyzed.
