37 SUMMARY A Discussion of Osamu Dazai s Hazakura to Mateki A touching tale reversedsisters écriture Yorina Kawanabe Hazakura to Mateki1939is a work by Osamu Dazai, featuring an elderly woman s reminiscences delivered in the form of a monologue. This monologue forms a touching tale, but at the same time, includes an instability that could ruin the touching tale from within. In addition, if we focus on the matter of écriture, the fictional love letters that two sisters write in the story, we can clarify the structure of the story, in which the meanings of the letters will be reversed and the sisters distress will come out. In this sense, the tale told by the elderly woman can be interpreted as an allegory on love and words. The letters symbolize what we can call the fate of words, for instance their uncertainty or untruthfulness. However, inane as the content of the letters might be when they are considered as documents or a written record, the act of writing the letters, which encapsulated the sisters earnest feelings, was far from meaningless. The sisters can share their distress by the letters for the first time. The elder sister wrote in her letter, I now believe that because we are lonely and powerless and we cannot do anything else, it is an honest, humble, and beautiful way to live to at least send words to you in all sincerity. This message symbolizes the attitude of a human being who tries to pin his or her last hope on words in defiance of the fate of words.
