大高月 I always try to greet students in the hallways. Sometimes the students are in a class that I teach, like OC I or OC II, and sometimes they are not. But I try to say hello to everyone if I can. Part of my job as the ALT at Oyodo High School is to expose everyone to a foreign culture. Often, students are very shy when I talk to them. Sometimes they seem afraid to speak to me. I believe that this is because they are not confident about English. I understand this feeling, because I am learning Japanese. Sometimes it is hard to use Japanese, and it can be embarrassing to make mistakes. But I am surprised, too. Many junior high schools in Japan teach English with the help of an ALT. Some elementary schools are even teaching English now. I would expect that most students could speak at least a little bit of English. But sometimes, the only English words students seem to know are Hello! and I'm fine, thank you. And you?åh And today, one student said to me ÅgEnglish no!åh Even if you are a student who doesn't know much English, you should remember that you are very lucky. The government of Japan has spent a lot of money to bring ALT's to high schools all over the country. That money comes from the taxes your parents pay. Your parents also pay tuition for you to go to high school. They buy books and school supplies for you. They want you to do well and learn so you can get a good job and lead a good life. You have good teachers who work hard to make your classes useful and interesting. And you have the chance to talk to a native English-speaker every day, if you want to. I walk around the hallways often, just speaking with students and asking questions. You are very fortunate. I do not expect everyone to love speaking and learning English. It's a hard language. I also do not expect all students to be good at it. Some people are good at languages, and some people are better at other things, like math or sports or art. But I do expect you to try and to do your best. English is a useful language. Most of the gairaigo words in Japanese are from English. There is a lot of English on Japanese signs, in Japanese TV shows, and in the lyrics of Japanese songs. If you go to foreign countries all over the world, you are likely to find people who speak at least a little bit of English. My friend is a sales manager for Panasonic Corporation. As he said to me one time, ÅgEnglish is indispensible.åh He is a very successful Japanese businessman who works with companies all over Europe. Think about your friends who are good at English. Isn't it cool when they can talk to foreigners on the train? Don't you ask them what song lyrics mean? Wouldn't you like to be able to understand American movies without having to read the subtitles? You can do all those things yourself, too. You just have to try your best during English class. You will make me very happy if I can tell that you are trying. I will help you as much as I can.
