Higher Education and Lifelong Learning 11(2003) A Trial of Music Education utilizing The Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo Hiroshi Miura ** Hokkaido University Abstract In Hokkaido University, a new type of music education utilizing the Pacific Music Festival held every summer in Sapporo was introduced from the 2002 fiscal year. In this paper, I present the concept of the educational program which aims at helping the students understand all aspects of the PMF, and report the course in detail practiced for the first time. Furthermore, from the experience of the first course, I discuss the concept of fine arts education suggesting the significance of cultural studies. Since fine arts, including music, are essentially connected with culture, the importance of culture for liberal education should be fully recognized. (Received on February 2, 2003)
